i love post-canon fic that isn’t about the juniors but very much includes the juniors
“Are we dating?”
Lan Huan’s face falls at the question, and oh no oh no he’s gone and ruined it all. Meng Yao should have been content with what he had but he wasn’t, he got spoiled and let his guard down and now he won’t have anything.
“I only ask because I. Because we do things that couples do sometimes.” He doesn’t know how to salvage this. Pretend Meng Yao asked because he wouldn’t want to be dating him? Pretend he was making sure they were just friends? Meng Yao could never pull it off, he’s never able to lie to Lan Huan and besides, he doesn’t want to. “I should apologize. Obviously we’re not, I don’t know why I said that.”
“You have nothing to apologize for, a-yao. In fact, I ask for your forgiveness. To be very honest, I assumed we were something when we’re not (as your evidenced by your question). To be dating, the people in the potential relationship are in clear agreement about the definition of their relationship. We haven’t discussed this before and it was very presumptuous of me to assume things about the nature of our relationship. I’m sorry, and I understand if you’re upset or don’t want to see me again.” Oh. He forgets, sometimes, that Lan Huan is impossibly kind. And more importantly, kind to Meng Yao when he asks mortifying questions.
“Wait, you thought we were… together?”
Day 4 - My Favorite Story
K, so this time I won’t bother you with my Untamed babbles (because you already know how awesome of a story CQL is, with Wei Wuxian being so tragically good and Lan Wangji being so determinedly and irrevocably in love that he mourns and searches for his man for 16 freaking years... Okay, maybe I babbled a little bit, but NO!) Let me pick something else instead.
I am a bit torn between two options this time, and it’s awkward because both stories were written by authors that... how can I put this... are kinda shitty writers. (omg, i hope i won’t get too much hate for this)
I’m gonna go with the story of RamKing as we know it from My Engineer (season 1 <= this might be important, depending on how season 2 will go)
So, when I say I love this story, please note that I am referring to their TV series storyline (and not that of Space: the Gap between us, i.e. the RamKing novel by Mommae).
I love that, even though they are side characters in the Series, they are not shallow, but very well defined. Ram is loyal to his friends, determined in everything he does and a man of very few words. King is an extrovert who has a surprising love for extrovert-atypical-interests such as plants and the silence of nature. They are very different and yet, so so so good for each other. King will forever be intrigued by Ram’s unusual personality and Ram will have an eternal safe space with King. In the series, they meet in a library, and that in itself is so beautiful and fitting... the quietest location possible, where King can just catch glimpses and have his curiosity latch onto Ram, while Ram will not be requested to speak or interact with anybody at all. This really is a great symbolism for their entire relationship. King is so good at giving distance or proximity and intimacy depending on what is truly needed at the time. They both, in different ways, save each other several times.
Their relationship, while complex and so interesting to follow, is actually unproblematic (which is rare in BL shows, let’s be real). Again, I stress, IN THE SERIES, because the novel ruins Ram completely. In series (so far) there is no violence, no unhealthy expectations, no deception, just pure friendship building and then acknowledgement of love.
And, I have to say that while I do enjoy watching the rest of the series, I don’t feel the same love for the other characters or couples. The main couple is constantly dancing around the typical annoying BL tropes of jealousy, dominance, miscommunication etc. and the other couples are too underdeveloped for me personally to get into their stories. So, when I say this is my favorite story, I mean only the parts between Ram and King, and not the entire show. And, when working on season 2, I hope they’ll stick to how they portrayed that pairing in season 1 and that they won’t follow the novel.
The second option for this day would be Theory of Love.
And, I kinda wanna explain why I like it, and why I don’t like Jittirain’s writing, but it’s super late for me... maybe I’ll edit this tomorrow or so. I’m so sorry.
a mdzs character each day of the week
thursday afternoons with nie minjue
it isn’t often that you find yourself having a hard time at work
the small cafe that you work at as a barista at,
is not usually busy
and honestly, the hard work that you’re dealing with
isn’t something that’s particularly hard
hard on your attention span
because the man that had ordered a caramel machiato
and taken the nicest window seat at the cafe,
just in the perfect line of the cash register that you’re manning
was absolutely breathtaking
his entire muted grey and deep green ensemble,
suited him just as well as the outside scenery backdrop he was in front of
and you were having a hard time listening to the orders that you were supposed to be taking
especially when your coworkers have to swat at your arm more than once
but you can’t be blamed,
not when a man as handsome as that was sitting in the perfect place for you to stare at
when Nie Mingjue sips the drink from his mug,
hides his smirk behind it
perhaps he knows how much you’re looking at him
another request for @paristwists! even in modern times, lan wangji is surrounded by lesbians. they are his friends :)
listen as much as I love CQL and appreciate it for slipping whatever they could through while carrying the load of limitations due to censorship, the censorship of the novel, the relationships, the intimacy is still a loss and a tragedy. when fans say things like that they loved CQL because it made wangxian more romantic for them by not showing the physical intimacy between the two sounds like "hey so these 1000 lives sacrificed to save this one person! oh how amazing!! perfect" the artistic creativity that the people involved in CQL were forced to apply is because of heavy censorship in an authoritarian regime, as much as you're allowed to celebrate what was created you should still be fighting and resisting against it in whatever little way you can.
i really hope people understand what im saying and why. (Im not a cql anti, thought I should clear that up)
wen qing interacting with most people: tough, no-nonsense, kind of mean, hides emotions, queen of being mysterious
wen qing interacting with jiang yanli: ☺️👉👈
I don't think it's mentioned how the casting of cql played Jiang Fengmian...They had 56 year old Lu JianMin playing him (the eldest of the the other castings for - JGS, LQR) add to that 29 year old Zhang JingTongthose visuals! playing Yu Ziyuan. Madam Jin her bff btw, who "maintained her youth quite well and seemed quite young, likely able to pass for twenty"(Chapter 77) is played by Hu XiaoTing -40. Clearly we can totally trust people to look past physical appearance and judge the characters based on their behavior. They're definitely going to keep in mind that it was YZY's side who forced JFM to marry her and understand she's the abuser not the victim, and they're definitely not going to make wild assumptions about what happened to "make" her that way abusive in order to shift the blame for her horrible behavior onto him. right? RIGHT?!
cql is simultaneously an incredible show (character development! costume design! super complex and fascinating relationships!) and an awful show (bad cgi! green screens! most incomprehensible plot structure i’ve ever seen!)
