Momento Mori to:
Tobuscus, for helping me and my older brother bond by bingeing Cute, Win, Fail, and his Minecraft series and his music videos (Channel is not dead! More of a “momento mori” for a childhood kinda thing :3)
thecomputernerd01, for making hilarious parodies that my brother and I still quote from time to time to this day (also not dead! But does have months between uploads)
Jordan Underneath, for introducing me to the wonderful world of horror games, providing an entertaining, macabre atmosphere with some nice dark comedy (Channel deleted due to personal reasons, now goes as “Jordan go to sleep”. Check out his new channel though!! It’s really awesome stuff!!)
Smosh, yet again for having my brother and I spend ours on the family computer together (Not dead either! Again, more of a “fond memories of childhood” type of thing!)
Buzzfeed Unsolved, I’m fascinated with strange phenomeon and criptids and stuff like that, but am also skeptical. provided funny entertainment, but also interesting to hear the history of the places or events (Technically not dead, but Shane and Ryan WERE the channel, but the left… and started a new one! It’s called “Watcher” and it’s basically what they would do with Unsolved, and does not disappoint.)
potterpuppetpals, quality content for a Harry Potter fan, my friends and I sang it all the time (Kinda not dead! Posted nothing for 2 years, then uploaded something 7 months ago)
MICHAELHICKOXFilms, really good stop-motion animation with legos, these were some of my favorite videos when I was younger (Not dead! Still uploads reguarly, but god what a throwback.)
Klay World, hilarious stop-motion clay videos. I’ve watched the entire series multiple times (Channel not dead, series is. “Robert Benfer” is the actual channel name and still uploads, but Klay World is no more.)
Versus, funny let’s plays/speedruns of games by two guys. I remember they were the reason I wanted to play Banjo-Kazooie so badly. (Not dead! Just another nostalgia trip)
Finally, all the fanfics I’ve read, only for the last update or final chapter to never come. It was a nice read while it lasted.
Joking aside, this was really interesting for me. Most of these channels are still kicking, to some degree. But it’s also funny to see how YouTube and the content I watched grew with me. I remember not even knowing that there were channels and I would just bounce from video to video. It was like opening a box at the back of my mind. Tobuscus reminded me of Smosh, which reminded me of potterpuppetpals, which reminded me of the animations I’d watch and it was a rabbit hole of nostalgia.
And that’s not even counting the channels that are still going on today! Mark’s channel was the first one I remember subscribing to when I finally got a YouTube account. It was funny how I grew up with YouTube as a means to connect with my brother (though he’ll probably deny it). We’d spend hours at the family computer, perched on the kitchen chairs and just watch. I remember us singing Tobuscus songs together, I remember us watching lego animations, I remember us quoting viral videos.
Now YouTube is less of “a means to waste time” (as my family sees it) and more of a community to me. I admit, I miss the wild, wacky, goofy videos from friends just grabbing a camera and deciding to just record something. Any time I see that authentic look from an old camcorder, I’m just sent back.
This was actually a really pleasant trip down memory lane, and now it’s making me want to rewatch all of my favorite videos!
