Nonprofit Vote got LOUDR 🔊 @ Tumblr

    WHO THEY ARE:

Nonprofit Vote helps nonprofits engage the people they serve in voting and elections. They are the leading source of nonpartisan resources to help nonprofits integrate voter engagement into their ongoing activities and services.

    WHAT WE DID:

Held on the 4th Tuesday of every September, the holiday is a single day of coordinated action between nonprofits, libraries, colleges and more doing on-the-ground voter registration work and major business promoting voter registration.

You know, one of my best friends here in Japan knows that I’m anti-capitalism and they said, “I’m yet to hear a proper anti-capitalism argument.”

Which, at least to me, betrays a misunderstanding of what I, personally, mean by being anti-capitalism. When I say it, I mean that I have a problem with the concept of profit over people.

It doesn’t sit right with me that minimum wage employees who work 8 hours a day are still unable to make a decent living. So if they want a living wage, they’re made to work overtime, live on tips or find other sources of income. And we glamorize it by calling it hustle culture.

It doesn’t sit right with me that there are people who need life-saving pharmaceuticals they can’t afford so they take less doses than they should or go without because it’s too expensive to get refilled regularly.

It doesn’t sit right with me that because you miss a couple payments towards utilities, you might find yourself without water or heat in winter.

It doesn’t sit right with me that in the early days of the pandemic, landlords had to kick dElInQuENt tenants out. And I understand that they sometimes have mortgages to pay too so their hands are sometimes tied. But also these are our fellow human beings.

It’s easy to say “it’s not the system. We can amend capitalism without getting rid of it.” And actually, you’re not wrong. Because with some regulation and government oversight/intervention, I’m sure something could be done.

But, at least to me, if the system emboldens and empowers those who benefit the most from it to do the things that they’ve been doing, doesn’t that reflect badly on THE SYSTEM TOO? And not just the system’s bad faith actors?

Doesn’t that mean that we need to explore a world that’s LESS DEPENDENT ON IT?

Did we learn nothing from when we ended things like feudalism and enslavement? Because they were unfair systems that benefited some at the expense of others? ❤️

CNN And Corporate Dems Have NO IDEA What Voters Want

In a CNN segment regarding state and local tax deductions, New Jersey Rep. Josh Gottheimer made it a point to distance the Democratic party from Progressives like Bernie Sanders, saying that the Democrats are “not into socialism” even though Progressive policies are wildly popular among constituent polling. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss on The Young Turks. Watch LIVE weekdays 6-8 pm ET. https://youtube.com/theyoungturks/live

“CNN - 11/28/2021 - Josh Gottheimer promoting SALT and bashing #BernieSanders "We're not into socialism, that's not in the Democratic party. We're about pragmatic problem solving and people who can just get things done...""

    https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxvox/how-80000-salt-cap-stacks-against-full-deduction-those-making-400000-or-less?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=tpc_social

"Congress seems to be considering two ways to address the Tax Cut and Job Act’s $10,000 cap on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction. The House version of President Biden’s Build Back Better (BBB) bill would raise the cap to $80,000. An alternative plan, first proposed by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), would eliminate the contentious cap entirely for those making $400,000 or less and then gradually restore the $10,000 deduction limit. Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) are developing a proposal similar to that idea, though final details may differ."
