It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was Us, then what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    --Terry Pratchett, Jingo (1997)

Agnes had been brought up in the knowledge that a lot of things were wrong. It was wrong to listen at doors, to look people directly in the eye, to talk out of turn, to answer back, to put yourself forward… But behind the walls she could be the Perdita she’d always wanted to be.  Perdita didn’t care about anything.  Perdita got things done.  Perdita could wear anything she wanted.  Perdita X Nitt, mistress of the darkness, magdalen of cool, could listen in to other people’s lives. And never, ever have to have a wonderful personality. Agnes knew she should go back up to her room.  Whatever lay in the increasingly shadowy depths was probably something she ought not to find. Perdita continued downward.  Agnes went along for the ride.

--Terry Pratchett, “Maskerade” (The treatment of Perdita as like this semi-separate entity is so fascinating.)

People were strange like that. Steal five dollars and you were a pretty thief. Steal thousands of dollars and you were either a government or a hero.

They say that the prospect of being hanged in the morning concentrates a man's mind wonderfully; unfortunately, what the mind inevitably concentrates on is that it is in a body that, in the morning, is going to be hanged.

So I recently started nightshifts in work so naturally I gravitated to knocking back a few coffees to get me through the night.

Turns out there was far too much caffeine in my system and it kicked off a panic attack while I was taking my bus home.

I guess I got a taste of what Knurd feels like.

    I understand why Vimes screamed.

Agnes had been shocked, but it hadn’t been shock at Dr. Undershaft’s death.  She’d been astonished at her own reaction.  It had been startling and unpleasant to see the man, but even worse to see herself actually being interested in what was happening–in the way people reacted, in the way they moved, in the things they said.  It had been as if she’d stood outside herself, watching the whole thing.

    --Terry Pratchett, “Maskerade”

(And see this is such a witchy thing, at least a Pratchett Witchy thing.  To be a good witch, you have to pay attention, you have to notice details, and you especially have to get familiar with People and how they act.  How they react to things, what they say, what their thoughts might be, whether those thoughts and feelings don’t match what they’ve said...  You’ve got to be an observer.  And, you’ve got to be just a little bit to the side of the Story, if you’re going to work with it and step in where you’re needed.)

Running list of things I personally find questionable about BBC’s The Watch:

Everything that they’ve done to Lady Sybil. She’s quite explicitly a big middle aged woman who is absolutely batty about her pets in way that other people can’t understand. And she’s also got a romance storyline and that’s very cool and does not need girlbossification

Angua. First, she should have long, luscious hair because that then directly translates across to being her wolf fur. She’s also just been simplified into the basic “I am a monster….. lock me up” werewolf storyline that has been so overdone that Sir Terry decided to subvert it in his books

Sam Vimes is supposed to be scruffy however I think that this Vimes looks less ‘scruffy in a doesn’t take care of himself way’ and more like a grimy little rat man. I’m finding it hard to sympathise with his character, because I think he seems to be suffering from Stereotypical Man Pain, which I generally do not enjoy

Cheery and Carrot seem to come from two totally different dwarf cultures?? Where Cheery’s from they can be tall but only have one gender and where Carrot’s from they have a gender binary but no tall people?? Confusing

The imps still paint pictures, except now the pictures come out on a smart tablet thing? Absolutely terrible blending modern tech with fantasy elements because it doesn’t make sense

I don’t like Death’s voice. It seems as though it is impossible to gain the effect that I felt while reading the books audibly

Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler is another very specific parody of a very specific character that got turned into something the writers found more interesting but isn’t really

Nobby and Colon not being in the show reaaallly suggests to me that they’re unaware that the books are partially a parody of police tv shows, and also unaware of the fact that sometimes comic characters can be fun to watch; not everybody has to have angst

    Discworld Tale

I’m always thinking about that Anniverary Animation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQRboZwDrOI and so when I was reading Colour of Magic, they get stranded at the edge of the diskworld and look over it, then I started thinking how do units of messurement work?

Alphys sitting on there edge of the waterfall with Undyne : Some people say there's a portal at there bottom. That can take you out of this world. Out of this dimension entirely.
Undyne, backing up : Woah! Better not be so close to there edge you wouldn't want to fall and never exist here again
Alphys : Guess so. Others say you could just land on A'tuin's flipper or something? (The big turtle.)
Undyne : Oh the big turtle, love that guy! Big massive flippers treading infinity! I mean I can only swim a few kilometers at a time. Gotta hand it to A'tuin. Anyways what if you miss the flipper though lol you're being silly come on I can take you home, back to Hotland!
Alphys : Yeah. How many KM can you run?
Undyne : At once? Like a meter. One step at a time?
Alphys : Oh! Yeah! Haha, yeah!

Wyrd sisters down, about to start G!G! Which will be my first EVER watch novel and im very excited.

Also Sourcery is really winning me over. I dont LOVE it but Rincewind is definitely 4000% more likeable in this book. The scene(s) towards the end when he gets back to the library just about trampled on my stupid weak heart. Actually everything from the carpet onwards. This bitch really said "you put it upside down" truly the smartest idiot to ever live

#discw #discworld reread 2k21 lets go #Rincewind is like #my weird homeless uncle who probably owes me money #and i love him very much

"A cup of tea, Reverend?" said a voice by his side. It was the plump lady in charge of the Times' back issues department, who had taken to him as soon as he doffed his hat to her. She had the slightly wistful, slightly hungry look that so many women of a certain age wore when they'd decided to trust in gods because of the absolute impossibility of continuing to trust in men.
