    The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)

The one thing that an artist, regardless of their medium, must do is to have complete control of their work without it being compromised by other parties. My reasoning behind this notion comes in the form of this review. Orson Welles’ followup to his magnum opus “Citizen Kane” had the potential to be held up to high regard much like its predecessor, but because of studio control, it was cut mercilessly. There has been talk of a long lost third reel that did not make the final print which could have made the difference in this review. That being said, “The Magnificent Ambersons” is still a worthy picture on many levels, but could’ve been Citizen Kane Part II.

Based on Booth Tarkington’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name, the plot centers around a rich family over the years. Matriarch Isabel Amberson (Dolores Costello) had been courted in her younger days by Eugene Morgan (Joseph Cotten), but she marries Wilbur Minafer (Don Dillaway) instead. Their son George (Tim Holt) grows up spoiled and stuck-up. Years later, Wilbur dies and Isabel reconnects with Eugene, now a wealthy automobile tycoon a la Henry Ford. George also falls in love with Eugene’s daughter Lucy (Anne Baxter) who doesn’t reciprocate his affections. Through his jealousy, George is disgusted to find out from his aunt Fanny (Agnes Moorehead) that his mother and Eugene are an item and forbids the two from seeing each other. That fateful decision on George’s part leads to a ripple effect of tragedy and heartache.

Like “Citizen Kane”, “The Magnificent Ambersons”, on the surface, is a cinematic work of art.  Cinematographer Stanley Cortez channels Gregg Toland’s pioneering closeup shots from “Kane” by focusing on the angst of every character. Editor and future Oscar winning director Robert Wise intensifies the action with varying degrees of pacing between shots. Isabel and Eugene’s scenes for example are slow, but the character interactions make it seem quicker in its overall pace.  Director Welles, once again, works with his cast and crew to perfect every shot, scene and spoken word and that’s how it seems when the film begins. The opening shots, like an overture to a long play, puts the characters’ back stories in perspective leading up to the present day. But then through the studio’s interference, Welles was forced to cut crucial scenes, resulting in plot gaps. For example, one moment George and Isabel are on their long vacation away from home, the next scene, Isabel is on her death bed. Where’s the action that bridges these two plot points? It feels like the viewer is gypped of a few extra juicy scenes. Welles once showed the film to fellow director Henry Jaglom and then shut it 30 minutes in and said to Jaglom from that point, it became the studio’s film, not mine. How detrimental is that to a auteur like Welles? It seemed that it was a thorn in Welles’ backside that stayed with him until the end of his life.

The cast of “The Magnificent Ambersons” do not disappoint and that’s the saving grace in the film overall. Tim Holt makes George Minafer so unlikeable and yet you pity him at the same time. Such a performance requires subtle tact to make these two traits stand out and Holt aces it. Dolores Costello, formerly a silent film A-list star, proved that she was not a casualty of the talkies. You can tell by her facial expressions that she could show emotion just with a look of bewilderment, much like her earlier film roles. Joseph Cotten, as always, perfects the gentlemanly leading character. Eugene would not have been as warm if another actor played the role. Cotten doesn’t overdo his acting, something very rare in the old Hollywood films. Anne Baxter, in her breakthrough role, shows that she was someone that would dominate Hollywood in the years to follow. Lucy may not be a standout character, but Baxter adds some flavor to her that could have been lacking with someone else. The film’s best performance came from Agnes Moorehead as the spinsterish Aunt Fanny, a woman beset by jealousy just like George, and wears it on her sleeve. Simply put, a cast frozen in time that can never be duplicated by future actors.

“The Magnificent Ambersons” received four Oscar nominations; Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for Agnes Moorehead, Best Cinematography (Black and White), and best Art Direction. The National Board of Review awarded Tim Holt and Agnes Moorehead the top two acting prizes. Moorehead also won the New York Film Critics Circle Awards for Best Actress and the National Film Registry preserved the film in 1991, unfortunately in its heavily edited state. The story of the long lost third reel has been a discussion in the film world for decades, and if found, would be the finishing touch to a fully complete film. As time goes on, such a discovery seems less likely to occur, but miracles can happen and hopefully, the uncut version of “The Magnificent Ambersons” will see the light of day.

¿Quieres a alguien? ¿Quieres a alguien? Me preguntan a cada instante, puede que este presa en un errado pensamiento que no concuerdan. Dices que soledad es una enemiga más pero a estado ahí más que nadie ¡Verdad! ya basta de tonterías parece todo ironía. Pero así es la vida.
