confirmed cases have been at around ~110k for a week or so. can't tell if we've reached the Omicron Peak and they're going down soon or if it's just our testing infrastructure has saturated and we cannot observe numbers much higher than that. time will tell, as usual.

Dreamwidth update: Things consumed November 2021 PART TWO

I've decided to go through the games in my steam favourites/to play list in order of how well rated they are, since Steam makes that very easy to see. The aim is to finish them, watch a Let's Play, or give up and uninstall them. Because there are SO MANY and they are apparently VERY GOOD so I REALLY SHOULD PLAY THEM. First up is A Short Hike! I've added some other reviews I had pending, too. Games: Agent A, A Short Hike Movies: Enola Holmes Anime: Komi Can't Communicate ( Read more... )

I found this sentence in the Shaman King wiki:

A Vocaloid song titled of the same name was posted on Nico Nico Douga with the vocals performed by Megumi Hayashibara and lyrics written by the author Hiroyuki Takei based on the poem.

and now I am baffled. Megumi Hayashibara is not a vocaloid, she's a real human person (voice actress and singer, notable for roles such as Rei Ayanami and f!Ranma Saotome). Vocaloid songs are notable for not being sung by human people but instead by software; indeed I would argue that is their defining feature

i found what i think is the song being discussed and... it's described as a Hatsune Miku song? It sure sounds to my not very discerning ears more like a Hatsune Miku song? and yet the youtube link you can find there says, in the "music in this video" box, that the artist is 林原めぐみ. Which is how you write Megumi Hayashibara's name in Japanese.

who is singing the song? and if the answer is "vocaloid software", what is instead Megumi Hayashibara's involvement with it?

    ???

    dreamwidth update:

Well this is stressful. Over on the hellbird site, an apparently former friend is subtweeting me while liking my tweets and appearing to be trying to bait me into responding. This is because I asked them if the stepper motor on their 3D printer was going to be an easy part to replace if it needed that, and they yelled at me for 'manspalining', then refused to accept an apology and said I was a coward for deleting the comments. So now I have had to go from unfollowing them, to outright blocking them. And it's making me feel like shit. comments Comment? https://ift.tt/3IqIlLw

After the four and a half hours of filing paperwork, I showered, did dishes, made breakfast for the family, took DayQuil for incessant sneezing, and finally sat down with my morning tea at 11:30 AM. It’s not a bad day (lots getting done!!), but certainly one where it’s really nice to just sit and browse Tumblr while drinking tea.

dreamwidth update: Why, who is that mystery LinkedIn contact?

Every now and again I get a mystery LinkedIn contact notification and I'm just, "Hm. Wonder which fandom friend that is?" Could be a gamer friend instead, I guess? But probably a fandom friend. comments Comment? https://ift.tt/3rueHhq

TIL: the name George is derived from the Greek name Georgios (Γεώργιος), meaning "farmer" but more literally "earth-worker"

which is to say, the geo- in "George" is the same as the geo- in "geology" (and the "rg" bit is the same as in "erg", the CGS unit of energy (or work))

Also, the country of Georgia is etymologically unrelated.

(h/t to Rinna for telling me all this)

dreamwidth update: Jodie Whittaker as Antigone

I'm probably the last person to know about Jodie Whittaker as Antigone and Christopher Eccleston as Creon from back in 2012. Now why is the entire play not on YouTube? National Theater: Antigone - A selection of YouTube videos that are essentially dvd/blu-ray extras and are quite brilliant, but which only serve to whet my appetite for the thing I'm never going to get. comments Comment? https://ift.tt/3fJUzTn

dreamwidth update: That kind of writing is. Well, it needs editing.

"In a way that she could never describe to anyone, [Main Character] then promptly describes the thing that she literally just said could never be described.]" This was my own writing, so, uh, thank God I was editing and noticed something like that. Because I mean, really, I would mock that in someone else, so. Uh. Time to delete the first part of that sentence. Wow. comments Comment? https://ift.tt/3r5bJ2U

Dreamwidth update: Review: My Vow To My Liege

I really enjoyed the Chinese fantasy m/f romance visual novel My Vow To My Liege, historical RPF set in the 5th Century BC Kingdom of Ng/Wu about various real and mythical people. The protagonist is King Fuchai, a woman cross-dressing for Reasons (to do with Evil Dragons) It's well made, with good art, UI, music, and (Mandarin) voice acting. The writing is pretty good, too, a little repetitive in parts and with some pacing issues but made with a lot of heart. The English translation was done by one of the writers and is a little clunky and in need of proof-reading but has some moments of real poetry. And the game is LONG, you get a ridiculous amount of story for the low price. Content notes for the game: suicide, violence, incest (not a love interest), rape (not from a love interest), age gap ships, slavery, fatphobia, hurtful gender reveal, master-slave relationship, major character death, violence between love interests Here's the masterlist of my reaction posts and a character guide. More thoughts, no spoilers: ( Read more... )

Note for tumblr folk: I didn't bother crossposting any of the reaction posts.

dreamwidth update: Falling down on my letter writing!

So it occurs to me that I've fallen down on my letter-writing, which, whoops. If you're a Usual Suspect (which means if you've received a letter during Pandemic Times), you'll be getting a make-up mailing from me since I fell down on that self-imposed job. If you'd like to be added to the list of Usual Suspects, please click the link on the Dreamwidth post (comments are screened so only I can see them) and leave your address. Inside the US or international too. You will end up receiving a letter about whatever is on my mind at the time. (Or if I promised you something else and haven't sent it yet, you will receive another thing from me and apologies from me for being a slacker on top of that.) comments Comment? https://ift.tt/3HUXuVf

    Hearthomesickness

Omaticon 2022 was today, my first Omaticon, culminating with a synchronized watch of Avatar, which was also my first watch of the extended edition. I'd seen several of the extended-exclusive scenes already, but several of the more impactful ones I hadn't, and man... the hearthomesickness is real tonight afterward. It's a strange mix of alterhumanity and fandom for me - of the bones-deep longing I'm familiar with regarding my kintype and the emotional catharsis I'm used to with fandom angst. Those of you who know me personally at all have probably heard me say that I have a lot of emotions, and that's just... true in general for me; my emotions tend to run high whether positive or negative, for whatever reason. Fandom has always been good for me because of that, providing a safe catharsis, a place for me to feel joy and sorrow and love and hatred and angst and fluff so much that they each hurt, that they each make my chest feel like it might burst. It's an outlet to vent some of my emotional highs and lows so when real pain shows up it's not as overwhelming, or something. Or maybe I just like the feeling of being full to bursting with my feelings and it doesn't actually serve a "purpose" beyond that at all, I don't know. What I do know is that my hearthomesickness feels partly the same way - the same full-to-bursting, like I've got so many feelings that my skin should be stretched so thin with them as to turn transparent and let the world see the lot of them. Which itself isn't so different a feeling from the kind of homesickness associated with my draconity, with being skystarved. Given my weird relationship to Pandora as both hearthome and favored fandom, I'm not honestly sure which is the better comparison - and maybe it's the midpoint between, and maybe it simply doesn't matter.
