When I Die, Don't Stand on My Grave (TWD)
Chapter One: Night's Damnation
Word count: 319
TW: Normal The Walking Dead warnings.
Dying in this world is starting to seem like a luxury rather than something to be feared. Millions, if not billions of people in this world have died, and in no way does it look like fate plans on making me the next. I wish desperately for some way out.
I am on the night shift for guard duty.
The sun is starting on its arc through the sky, slowly warming the air. I am still awake, though barely able to form a coherent thought that doesn't involve sleep. I can't stand without leaning against the concrete railing that surrounds the top of the tower I'm in.
Who's idea was it to even put me out here? I try to remember as I peer through the scope of a gun that weighs half as much as I do. Eleven walkers in the field, seven against the fence, four that I can see are shambling out of the woods. Nothing has changed.
“Fucking Rick,” I mutter to myself, lowering the gun. There is no real anger behind my words, of course. I owe my life and my brother's to Rick, several times over.
I am still frustrated, though, so I curse him and everyone else who agreed to let a fourteen-year-old girl take the night watch in the tower.
The walkers’ growls pick up. I snap to attention immediately and lift my eye to the scope.
A woman with dark skin and dreadlocks stands at the fence. She is alive, made obvious by her unflagging stare that seems to penetrate my soul. One of her hands is wrapped tightly around the fence as if it is the only thing still holding her up. The other is clutching…
I recoil as if something physical has hit me, nearly dropping the gun.
