MiRAck 4 Oscillator setup on iPad. This is a great way to experiment with Modular Synthesis without breaking the bank. MiRack is $9.99 on iOS and Free I believe on Mac. It seems to be an offshoot of the Free VCV Rack software for Windows, Mac and Linux. You can make some NASTY Sounds in there. Perfect for folks that enjoy sampling too. So all you MPC/Force folks can expand your Synth engine options for little to no $$$ create the Sound in your head then Autosample into a keygroup and have exactly the sound you desire. Want 32 oscillator synth? Go for it, they cost nothing extra other than CPU cycles.

Ion & Sophus is one of the projects of Sergey Suhovik (Exit In Grey, Sister Loolomie, Five Elements Music, Radioson, etc.) from the city of Pushkino (Sub-Moscow region, Russia). Formerly this progekt was a Sergey’s duo with Diona Nikolaeva.
Today was the first day back after a two-day weekend/break from my routine. Which made me appreciate how I really am a person of extremes – sticking to my schedule all week went great which meant I felt fully free to reward myself with a weekend full of drinking with friends on my roof and hang-over binging Sex and the City on the couch the following day. While I embraced my work hard, party hard mentality, by this morning I really was looking forward to being scheduled once more.
It is meaningful timing that I am learning about writing music electronically while reading Dr. Joe Dispenza’s Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose your Mind and Create a New One which pivots on the science of quantum physics as a system to change yourself and your existence. Dr. Dispenza uses the imagery that our thoughts are electrical charges in the quantum field and our emotions are magnetic charges. The concepts can get complex but, in short, everything exists as potential energy that does or does not react with whatever energy you put forth through your thoughts and emotions. In order to draw future events and future “you’s” to yourself that you desire, your thoughts and feelings must be aligned and coherent in order to affect the potentialities in the quantum field. It is not enough for you to think one way but feel another – feelings and thoughts must cohere, which is the exercise of mindfulness. “You may want wealth, you may think wealthy thoughts, but if you feel poor, you aren’t going to attract financial abundance to yourself. Why not? Because thoughts are the language of the brain, and feelings are the language of the body.”
I watched a TED talk today with an artist named Claudio, a musician who performs live electronic compositions, and she was eloquently explaining the process of taking a feeling and translating it into music – specifically electronic music. The electronic world appeals to her because she can be solitary, alone with the machines, away from judgement or fear of human collaborators, with any sound imaginable at her fingertips to evoke just the correct feeling. It is an amazing conjunction to think about how vast the capabilities of sound are now with electronic music, how vague, undefined, mysterious, terrifying it is to venture into the unknown spaces to put sound to feelings – yet how much technical know-how, skill, and endless hours of time and concrete practice it takes to understand how to use these machines.
It seems my desire to write electronically and to be able to record and produce are growing ravenously. Today was pretty overwhelming, honestly, and I felt in despair numerous times over how much I have to learn – not just about producing, but in regards to understanding music itself and how to write better melodies, how to control and use my vocal capacities. The variances of potential are screaming out from every corner and it’s gotten me a bit spooked. I tried to allow myself to feel those feelings.
But, in the midst of so much not-knowing, I am experiencing concrete feelings of growth – just like the plant babies on my roof that keep courageously and powerfully, all of a sudden, shoving themselves out of the dirt after days upon days upon days of hiding.
-My sit in meditation this morning was deeper than it has been in a while, and I could see a light-blue light – I don’t know what that means, but I felt like it was a good sign.
-A session with my therapist helped me realize that I have a sense of the me I know I am (trippy) and that, in my daily work, visualizing her and making friends with her, however she shows up and however she wants to act, is crucial. Also, that other people’s issues are not my problem or my fault.
-I bit the bullet and broke the bank with a $40 Udemy class about Pro Tools First – I am on my way to being a beginner. And my head is spinning with gear ideas/needs.
Writing was bleak, to say the least, but I did put out a few ideas/lyrics/demos. My biggest frustration today was my inability with melodies of late. The past songs I’ve written had melodies I enjoyed and I thought that I would just keep climbing steadily up the mountain of melody. What’s with this turn-about? I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been writing almost exclusively on the piano and previously, I always wrote on guitar? Maybe I’ll break out my new mountain dulcimer tomorrow to see if that will shake off the silky cobwebs. If anyone has any advice or ideas for vocal exercises to assist in improving melodic compositions, that’d be awesome.
I must admit, after watching an interview tonight with Billie Eilish and Finneas about how they produced When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go, I had major knowledge-envy. [Also, they’re just impossibly cool as fuck, so, general envy as well.] I threw my computer on the ground and threw myself back on my couch, my head whirling about how much I have to learn and how I’m going to do it. Should I go back to school? Do I really want to be in debt again? Do I need to go to music school? Would it make more sense for me to do everything independently? How will I have enough time and resources to focus when I’m working a job? Should school be my time-holder?
The only consolation is, I know this is making me feel alive. So, I’m going to figure something out.
I’m going to bed and will work through some Artist’s Way Week 2 to soothe my brain about everything it doesn’t know.
