It was a little bit of a struggle to find anyone who knew Hylian Sign Language. Link was lucky enough to find a few people who could sort of understanding him, including Impa in Kakariko Village. It wasn’t until he was walking through Hateno village, Epona trotting beside him, when he saw you, signing simple words to the small children sitting in a semi-circle around you.
He didn’t realize he was staring, neither did you, not until one of the kids hopped up and tapped you on the shoulder, whispering in your ear while they pointed to the young man staring at you from across the dirt path. You turned to him and gave him a small wave.
Link’s face never usually wavers, maintaining the same stoic and strong expression painted onto his gorgeously sculpted face. So when I tell you that he nearly cracked, I mean full-on flustering mess from a simple, thoughtless wave from a pretty person like you.
I mean he doesn’t feel these feelings too often so it was almost as scary as fighting his first golden Lynel in over 100 years.
He mustered up enough courage to give you a curt nod, before taking Epona by the reigns and directing her towards the stables by the inn, you watching him pass by, a look of curiosity on your face.
As you daydreamed about the young soldier, the children you were teaching starting teasing you, yelling in a sing-song voice that “[y/n]’s got heart eyes!!” Which resulted in you snapping out of it and shooing them away to their own homes, signing some scolding words at the ones who lingered.
After that day, you started seeing Link around Hateno village more often, hanging around the abandoned house, walking down the hill from the ancient tech lab, and even listening to the wild stories the children told. You always watched from afar, not wanting to invade his personal space, though every time you turned away to get back to your daily tasks, a pair of piercing blue eyes followed your walking figure, distracting him from whatever he was doing.
You two hadn’t interacted much for a while, but as you walked into the Kochi dye shop, materials Sayge needed in hand, you came face to face with a half-naked Link, usual tunic, and pants hanging next to him to dry, both now in a brilliant sapphire blue.
You stopped functioning.
Of course, in a fit of embarrassment you instinctually pull your hands up to your face, forgetting that your baskets were filled with delicate gems and liquids. Before you could even sputter in an attempt to apologize without moving your hands and looking again, Link makes a dive bomb, landing on his belly with hands outstretched.
The baskets fall gracefully down and hit the palms of his hands. Steadily, he lifts himself to his feet, balancing the baskets like a waitress, before turning to Sayge and handing him the materials. He turns back to you, eyes peeking out from your hands, and gives you a bushing smile, one hand on his hip, the other scratching his neck sheepishly. You cautiously moved your hands away from your face, signing a quick “i should have knocked first, I’m so sorry!”, seeing you use HSL made Link’s face go from an embarrassed smile, to a look of surprise. He quickly signs that “it’s alright, It was my fault for not being decent!” You nod in understanding and realize that he should probably get dressed before he gets too cold.
“I’ll turn around so you can change in privacy...” you examine his face as he focuses on your hands, curtly nodding and turning around to put his clothes on.
He walks over to tap your shoulder when he is finished. You turn around and jump a little, surprised by how close he is.
He paused, unsure how to say what he wanted
“I’ve seen you around the town quite a bit but I don’t even know your name...would you mind walking around and getting to know each other a bit?”
You stared at his hands, long enough to notice all the callouses on his hands from the long hours of sword training before once again snapping out of it and signing a simple “sure”, a small smile on your face.
You both left together after Link paid Sayge, walking up the hill to watch the sunset, singing simple questions and answers to each other as you went along, a warmness filling both your cheeks.
Literary took me two months to write this but I’m kinda happy with how it turned out. Now if you excuse me, there are some Lynels waiting to be slain ✨⚔️✨ have a nice day <3
