I keep getting told by self-proclaimed “progressives” that, as a conservative, my view of whole classes of people is built on hate.
Problem with that: “classes of people” mean nothing.
Why should it? Are you, the person reading this, wholly or even mostly defined by your income? Your education level? Your skin color? Your genitalia? Your sexual preference? Do YOU think that you are?
If so…why? That’s just stupid.
Why should I hate you if you’re black? Or gay? Or whatever?
But when I hear from people who claim to be “progressive”, judging people by these factors appears to be the be-all and end-all. If you’re sporting a rainbow flag on your lapel when I meet you for the first time, I will shrug and treat you the same as I would otherwise.
A “progressive” - and this is why I put the term in quotes - will visibly shift mental gears the second they see the pin. You will also notice that they immediately begin following a script tailored to said pin - not to YOU. You have, in that moment, become secondary in importance to the pin, because it is the pin which directs how a “progressive” MUST speak to and act towards you. Anything else risks social ostracism from other “progressives”.
Me, I’m going to treat you in accordance with HOW you are, not WHAT you are. If you’re an asshole, I might hate you for that reason. That you might be an asshole who also happens to identify as a walrus makes zero difference. If identifying as a walrus is what you’re being an asshole about, it’s still about you being an asshole and not a walrus.
Maybe some people feel validated if they think tons of people hate them for flying a given flag. There’s a lot of American superpatriots who fly the US flag in everybody’s face and say that being American is the greatest thing on Earth and everyone who isn’t an American can suck it or GTFO… and this also descrfibes a great many gay, bi, lesbian, trans, black, Latino, and other “oppressed” people who are “just taking pride in what they are”.
Nah. Those people are just being exactly as annoying as the superpatriots for the same exact reason. And FWIW, I don’t hate the superpatriots either, I just wish they’d shut up and let me enjoy the Fourth of July without roaring down the street blaring “I’M PROUUUUUUD TO BEEEEE AN AMERICUUUUUUN WHERE AT LEAST I KNOW I’M FREEEEEE” and five flags waving from their Ford F-150′s antennae.
