  • I keep getting told by self-proclaimed “progressives” that, as a conservative, my view of whole classes of people is built on hate.

Problem with that: “classes of people” mean nothing.

Why should it? Are you, the person reading this, wholly or even mostly defined by your income? Your education level? Your skin color? Your genitalia? Your sexual preference? Do YOU think that you are?

    If so…why? That’s just stupid.

Why should I hate you if you’re black? Or gay? Or whatever?

But when I hear from people who claim to be “progressive”, judging people by these factors appears to be the be-all and end-all. If you’re sporting a rainbow flag on your lapel when I meet you for the first time, I will shrug and treat you the same as I would otherwise.

A “progressive” - and this is why I put the term in quotes - will visibly shift mental gears the second they see the pin. You will also notice that they immediately begin following a script tailored to said pin - not to YOU. You have, in that moment, become secondary in importance to the pin, because it is the pin which directs how a “progressive” MUST speak to and act towards you. Anything else risks social ostracism from other “progressives”.

    That’s inhuman.

Me, I’m going to treat you in accordance with HOW you are, not WHAT you are. If you’re an asshole, I might hate you for that reason. That you might be an asshole who also happens to identify as a walrus makes zero difference. If identifying as a walrus is what you’re being an asshole about, it’s still about you being an asshole and not a walrus.

Maybe some people feel validated if they think tons of people hate them for flying a given flag. There’s a lot of American superpatriots who fly the US flag in everybody’s face and say that being American is the greatest thing on Earth and everyone who isn’t an American can suck it or GTFO… and this also descrfibes a great many gay, bi, lesbian, trans, black, Latino, and other “oppressed” people who are “just taking pride in what they are”.

Nah. Those people are just being exactly as annoying as the superpatriots for the same exact reason. And FWIW, I don’t hate the superpatriots either, I just wish they’d shut up and let me enjoy the Fourth of July without roaring down the street blaring “I’M PROUUUUUUD TO BEEEEE AN AMERICUUUUUUN WHERE AT LEAST I KNOW I’M FREEEEEE” and five flags waving from their Ford F-150′s antennae.

    Get it?

  • If people can’t get on board with #freethenips then let’s make it equal. Blur men’s nipples. Make it public indecency for them to go shirtless. Take their photos down. If we can’t be free then let’s hold them to their own standards. (This is just to make a point.)

Chisholm’s words are echoed by Carl Sagan when he noted that in the ancient Library of Alexandria, home to many of the greatest scholars known in the world at the time, “they questioned the permanence of the stars but not the justice of slavery.”

What use is an abstract metaphysics to people who are enslaved? What sustenance will mathematical proofs provide to a child dehydrated and starving? ⁣

“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain,” wrote evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould, “than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.” This speaks to the inherent role of luck in this world.

Poverty and wealth are not about merit; they’re about the toss of the dice.

If we want it to be otherwise, we have to work against the forces that be. Equality won’t happen by accident. It will only happen if we make it happen. ⁣

States have long possessed the capacity to provide for citizens, both in material resources and means to cultivate rich inner lives. Yet we continue to fail to provide for the majority, especially those most vulnerable.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

In a truly just society, all persons would have broadly equal access to the material and social means necessary to live a flourishing life. We can have that. We must choose it and fight for it every day. As Angela Davis says: we have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world and we have to do it all the time.

⁣These sentiments underscore that true wisdom is inherently tethered to morality. Intelligence must be coupled with virtue for it to move beyond the realm of worthlessness. ⁣

(reminder: why change the names? native mascots make white people feel good and native people feel ashamed and insecure. schools and areas in which mascots are native americans, the suicide rates of native people are markedly higher. PUT PRESSURE ON ANY TEAM YOU KNOW OF TO CHANGE THE NAME! WE ARE NOT MASCOTS!!)

  • I was sitting on the couch with my brother, and I asked him how would he react if I were to run for president when I’m older. (Not probably gunna happen) anyways, his response was: “No, I know how you are, and you shouldn’t run for president.”

I was like, “What do you mean?”

“You’re a feminist, so you’re going to make a bunch of stupid feminist laws. You’ll also make a bunch of racial equality laws and that type of stuff.” Was he response.

When he said that, I paused for a minute, looking at him, studying him. He wasn’t fucking joking. I asked him if he thought that all people were related equally. He said yes. The following questions were ones I asked him, in which he responded yes to all of them:

“So, do you think all women are treated fairly in the workplace?”

“Do you think all people are tested equally by the justice system?”

“Do you think that daughters are treated equally as sons?”

“Do you think that people of color are treated the same as white people?”

“Do you think Trump should get re-elected?”

The one question he said no to was:

    “Are you joking right now?”

He’s 11 years old. If he thinks that all people are treated equally, are parents are doing something wrong, scratch that, the whole world is doing something wrong. He’s the same as my parents. I want to leave this house so bad, but I can’t do that! Not for another 4 years.

I made this art journal entry January 2019 for Martin Luther King JR’s birthday. He is more of a hero to me than any of the faces on our currency or statues/momunents.

Martin Luther King Jr was born, January 15th, 1929. He skipped both the 9th and 12th grade. He graduated Morehouse college at the age of 15. Became an ordained minister at 18. Loved to sing and play pool. He got his PHD at 26. He loved Gandhi’s nonviolent approach and applied it to America’s struggle for equal rights. He met every situation with patience, sympathy, and understanding. In 1964, he was Time’s man of the year. In 1958, while signing books, he was stabbed in the chest. He was rushed to a four-hour surgery. Doctors later told him that had he sneezed, the blade, which was lodged near his aorta, would have killed him. At 35, he was the youngest to win the Nobel prize. He organized the boycotting of buses. In 1965, the voting rights act was passed, finally allowing African Americans the right to vote. On April 4th 1968 at age 39, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot dead, outside his 2nd floor motel room. His tombstone reads, “Free at Last”

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birmingham jail letter:

“First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.
