No burden will be yours alone to bear, not while I’m here.” He said, pulling her in closer and pressing a kiss to her temple.
Azriel got the message from his shadows and made his way to their meeting spot right away.
Normally, they would plan their meetings in advance, it was all a part of their agreement, to keep seeing one another, but to be as careful as possible. If anyone found out about their trysts it could be disastrous for them and the entire Night Court.
Tonight, however, Elain hadn’t sent for him, it had been his shadows letting him know that she was there and in distress.
Azriel’s thoughts ran rampant wondering what the distress could be. Was it something to do with Lucien? Had Rhysand found out about their game? It couldn’t be that, or he’d have sent for Azriel himself. He arrived at their place and broke into a run as soon as his boots hit the ground, throwing the door open. “Elain?!”
He strode in, feeling her there, but not seeing her. “Elain?” Then he heard her, a tiny voice from the darkest corner of the room.
“Az?” she called out, barely louder than a whisper and he strode to her. She had clearly been crying and when he knelt in front of her, she launched herself into his arms and broke into sobs her whole body trembling.
He held her, rubbing his hand over her back. “El, what happened? Please tell me what’s wrong. Are you hurt?” He felt so helpless, there was nothing that he could do to help her when he didn’t even know what was wrong. She appeared to be fine, but something had clearly upset her terribly.
“The shadows.” She choked out between sobs, her whole body trembling.
“Yes, the shadows told me that you were here.” He said, moving to sit on the floor and pulling her into his lap.
“N-not yours.” She cried. “Please, stay with me.”
“I’m here, El, I’m not going anywhere.” He promised, stroking her hair back.
Elain closed her eyes, hands fisted in Azriel’s shirt. “I was there again, in the cauldron, in the dark. It felt so real, I thought it took me again.” She sobbed.
“If it took you again, I would come find you again.” He vowed, kissing the top of her head. “I’ll always come for you, Elain, always.”
“I was there in the dark for such a long time. I thought it would never let me go.” Elain said, her voice trembling. “I kept trying to reach the light, but every time I got close, it would pull me back under. I couldn’t breathe.”
“It was just a nightmare, you’re safe now. Just calm down and I’ll take you back-”
“No!” she cried, her arms going around him tightly. “If you take me back, then they’ll come back. Now they’re always waiting.”
Azriel’s expression darkened. “Who? Who is always waiting?”
“The shadows…” she whispered.
“El, my shadows are always there, they’re there for your protection, they would never hurt you.” He assured, keeping his arms around her as she clung to him. “I can make them go away, you won’t have to see them if they bother you.”
“No…not your shadows. Your shadows make them go away.” She confessed. It was why she’d gone to their place, she knew he always left shadows there to watch over it, in case it should ever be discovered.
Dread rose in Azriel as he asked, “Where are these shadows from, Elain?”
“I don’t know, the cauldron maybe?” she offered, her head resting on his chest.
Azriel’s suspicions immediately went to Koschei. “If Koschei might be reaching out to you using shadows, we should tell Rhysand.”
Elain looked up at him, worry and exhaustion on her face. “They didn’t even want me to tell you…”
Azriel avoided telling her that this made him even more suspicious, instead, he asked, “Why not?”
“They said you would be upset.” She said quietly.
“Upset with you?” he pressed.
Elain shook her head. “No, upset that they were speaking to me.”
Azriel considered, then stood, picking Elain up and carrying her into the bedroom. He left her bundled in her cloak, but slid her shoes off before laying her down and covering her with a warm blanket, moving to sit beside her, his back against the headboard.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered as he took her hand.
“Don’t ever apologize for needing me, or needing help, El.” He said, fingers brushing through her hair. “Try to get some sleep, hmm? I’ll be here to watch over you.”
“I’ll try…” she said, her eyes already closing from the soothing feeling of his fingers in her hair. As Elain faded back into sleep, she heard his warm and rich voice singing a song of words she didn’t understand, it still made a faint smile appear on her lips before sleep took her.
There was nothing, only darkness all around her.
“Beautiful…” it was a haunting whisper in the dark. “You belong with us now…”
She tried to scream, but the dark water filled her mouth, silencing her, choking her. It felt different this time, then more voices came.
Nesta screaming as they were snatched from their beds.
“Please, I will do anything, I will give you anything.” Feyre begged before Elain was shoved into the cauldron.
Elain kicked and thrashed, struggling to reach a tiny shimmer of light above her.
“Not you, never you.” Graysen sneered, shattering her heart.
She fought through the water, her lungs burning as a hand broke through the surface, a golden thread stretching from that hand to hers and she knew it was Azriel, but she heard one more voice.
“You’re my mate.”
She kicked and thrashed, fighting frantically to reach Azriel’s hand, the tips of her fingers brushing his when wisps of shadow wrapped tightly around her and dragged her back down. Unimaginable pain ripping through her as that golden thread connecting them snapped.
“Stay with us…don’t go…” they whispered and she could feel their gentle caress on her face.
“AZRIEEEEEL!!!” She screamed, as she descended into the darkness, that small scrap of light disappearing from above her.
She could feel the darkness pressing in on her now, there were so many voices she could barely make them out, but the ones that she did, she wished she couldn’t. Flashes of memories slammed into her, but not happy memories, memories that hurt her, cut her so deeply that she wished they would just finish her.
Azriel laying in a pool of his own blood, Cassian beside him.
The inside of Hybern’s war tent, the screams outside filling her with terror.
Her father, still and lifeless in the grass.
Elain screamed and couldn't stop screaming more and more black water filling her mouth to quiet her, she clawed at her throat, fighting to breathe.
Azriel jolted awake, hearing Elain scream for him. His breath caught in his throat as shadows swarmed frantically all around the room.
“Elain?!” His Siphons flared, a blue dome shielding them both as he pulled Elain into his arms, shaking her gently. “Elain, wake up!”
Elain gripped his shirt, struggling to breathe in her nightmare before she sat up screaming again, the shadows in a frenzy outside the blue shield before Elain fell back limply against him.
Elain opened her eyes hours later, her hand moving to rest on Azriel’s Siphon. It was warm under her hand and it comforted her.
“Hey…” Azriel said, already awake. “I need to get you home, El.”
“Can’t we wait til morning?” she asked, rubbing her eyes.
“It is morning.” He said, putting his arm around her as she sat up and looked around, now seeing the dome over them, covered in shadows and blocking out most of the daylight.
Elain gasped and pressed into Azriel’s side, watching the shadows in horror. "Can’t you make them go away?"
“These are your shadows, El, they’re under your command.” He said, rubbing his hand over her arm to soothe her.
“I don’t know how.” She said, looking up at him. “I don’t know how to speak to them, to make them do what I want…”
“You do.” He nodded. “You always talk to mine and you’ve been communicating with yours. Just tell them what to do.”
“Where do I tell them to go?” she asked, looking up at him.
“You can tell them to go anywhere you want them to, or anywhere they would like as long as they return when you call for them.” He answered.
Elain held his hand tightly and little by little the shadows began to flit and fly away until only Azriel’s shimmering dome of protection remained.
“I’m sorry, Az. Sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, I was just so afraid I’d somehow done something wrong.” She said, looking up at him. “I thought they would just go away on their own.”
“I understand, but in the future we can face these things together. No burden will be yours alone to bear, not while I’m here.” He said, pulling her in closer and pressing a kiss to her temple. “The only thing that upsets me, is that you were ever exposed to the kind of darkness that moves the shadows to speak to us.”
“Now, I wish I could stay here with you all day, but unfortunately, I really should get you back before you miss breakfast.”
Elain whined and pressed her face into his chest, giving a muffled “fine” before she sighed and slid out of bed, Azriel following.
“I’m going to leave a shadow with you from now on, just in case, alright? They’ll let me know if you need me.” Elain nodded and he took her face in his hands and kissed her softly before leading her through the shadows and into her room.
“Will you be alright now?” he asked, cradling her cheek in his hand.
She nodded. “I will, thank you Az, for everything.” She threw her arms around him, kissing him once more before she released him and gave a little wave. He returned it and stepped back through the shadows hoping that her restless nights would now be over. This new development was definitely going to require some additional training.
