They still haven’t fixed the bumps at COTA, the worst affected areas are being resurfaced for 2022 whilst some areas have just been ground down recently.
It could make setting up the cars trickier (and make practice all the more important) as they need to figure out the best set up for the suspension.
We are back to Texas for the US GP at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), this is one of the more recently designed Hermann Tilke tracks, and is known by many as the most Tilke track.
This 20 corner circuit is a medium downforce, front limited circuit where 59% of the lap is taken full throttle. It’ll be vital for teams to get the downforce set up right for this track as too much will cause teams to lose time on the straights, whilst too little will cause instability through the esses and lose time too.
Engine power is important here too, its not just an aero dependent track, a strong PU in the back of the car will definitely be an advantage to drivers.
The track is very wide as it was designed and built at a time when F1 was having quite significant issues with overtaking, and as such there's quite a few corners where there are multiple possible lines, which allows cars to go side by side and battle through the corners.
COTA’s design actually takes inspiration from a lot of the traditional European tracks like Spa and the Red Bull Ring, where the track is carved into the contours of the land, to create natural elevation change. It also takes inspiration from tracks like Hockenheim, Silverstone and Istanbul Park (Turkey) when it comes to its corners, if you look at the track there is a Maggots and Becketts clone (Silverstone) and a corner very similar to Turkey’s Turn 8 as well as Hockenheim’s Arena Bends.
Like Turkey it is another one of the few circuits that run anti-clockwise, and this overall creates a bigger strain on the drivers necks.
Corners to Look Out For
Unfortunately like most modern tracks COTA’s corners are unnamed, which instantly deducts points in my book.
Turn 1: The start/finish line to the top of Turn 1 sees an elevation of 34m, even steeper than the Raidillon at Spa because it climbs more quickly in a shorter distance. You’ll see drivers fighting all the way up and into the blind corner of Turn 1, where there are multiple different lines that they can take.
Turns 3 - 6: The drivers hit speeds of almost 320kph as they veer right then left through T3 and T4, the start of a series of corners modelled on Silverstone’s Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel complex. Turns 5 and 6 complete the Silverstone sequence in which the drivers must be precise on the throttle in order to carry their speed all the way through.
Turns 7 & 8: These two are loosely modelled off of the Senna esses at Interlagos and complete the series of fast right-left transitions that was started back in T3.
Turn 12: I love a hard braking zone after a long straight and at the end of the 1km back straight, the drivers will slow from 300kp to just over 100kph to make it through. This is a good overtaking spot, but also a spot where drivers will likely have lock ups.
Turn 15: One of the best corners on the track, both for the drivers and the fans in the grandstand, it is hard-braking, down to a slow 90kph And it is all about getting the right line.
Turn 16, 17 & 18: This is a multi-apex corner mirrored after Istanbul Park’s famous Turn 8 in Turkey. It sweeps, sweeps some more and sweeps even further with just minor adjustments to the racing line.
Who’s at an Advantage?
Its hard to tell for sure, when we were here last time out in 2019, it was close between the Mercedes and the Red Bull, so I don’t necessarily think it’ll be a clean sweep for either of them.
I would probably put my money on Mercedes, this has usually been a strong track for them, with the long straights, but I do expect Red Bull to be strong in Sectors 1 and 3.
With the similarities that this track has with Silverstone (it shares a lot of characteristics with Silverstone, but it just has more elevation) I would think that Ferrari will possibly be ahead of McLaren, if they can work the tyres properly.
In the true midfield I think it’ll be close between Alpine and Alpha Tauri, one will have better qualifying pace and the other stronger in the race. Alpha Tauri do seem to have a pretty stable car, whilst the Alpine still has moments of unpredictability.
I strangely feel like COTA will suit Alfa Romeo, they have a pretty good aero package and decent pace.
There will be at least one new engine component taken this weekend, possibly a whole new engine assembly. COTA is a good place to take penalties as its possible to overtake and that fresh engine will help you out.
At COTA you only need to be 0.8s a lap faster than the car in front to be able to pass, compared to other tracks this is minimal. As a result, teams may be more inclined to a commit to a two-stop strategy knowing that a driver on fresh tyres will be able use their performance advantage to cut back through the field.
There will likely be a mixture of two stoppers and one stoppers, especially as the chosen tyres are C2-C4, but a big defining factor of the one stop will be the track temperatures.
Fernando Alonso: "Yuki [Tsunoda]. He is quite an interesting person. I would be curious to see more of him!"
Charles Leclerc: "Yuki because he is just such a character and really funny!"
Carlos Sainz: "Yuki, he is so funny!"
