January is the clinking of glass bottles of homemade summer jam, stored in the back of the cupboard and finally being taken out. The heat of the fire and the quiet sound of snow falling on trees.
February smells like chocolate. Of melting snow and the first warm days. It feels like red satin ribbons and the first violets emerging from the grass.
March tastes like honey on the tongue. The promise of sweet smelling blossoms and warm grass. Of gentle warmth and rain soaked soil.
April sounds like rain falling down drainpipes. It feels like new growth on pine trees and the first blossoms about to bud.
May is brash and bold. Thousands of flowers clamoring for attention. A riot of sounds and colors. Winter is over and summer is just around the corner.
June is the crunch of watermelon. Lazy afternoons on the couch. The tang of lemonade and those first hot days.
July hits like a hammer. An explosion of light and heat and people. July is sun baked sand and the smell of barbecue.
August smells like chlorine pools. The feel of new notebooks and empty parks. August feels like asphalt too hot to touch.
September sounds like wind whispering through tall dry grass. Green leaves drying out and turning brittle. Fans turned on as high as they go and windows wide open.
October tastes like sugar. October is getting lost in corn mazes and blanket getting pulled out of storage and tossed on beds. Of jackets hanging on hooks. Candlelight and warmth.
November feels like the cruch of dry leaves. Of frost clinging to the ground in the mornings. It feels like umbrellas shaken off before walking inside. Soft scarves and wool coats.
December smells like snow. Of growing anticipation and the promise of fun. It sounds like the snap of wood in the fireplace and carols in the street. It feels like plastic ribbons and brightly colored paper. When winter is as its darkest, December feels like light.
