Alice Pike Barney - The Necklace (1898)
Alice Pike Barney studied in Paris with portrait painter Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran, who believed that a sitter’s outward appearance reflected his or her inner character. The Necklace, which was probably a self-portrait, shows a self-assured woman with a gold necklace. Her direct gaze and the portrait’s dramatic lighting lend her an almost haughty air, hinting at Barney’s independent and somewhat rebellious character.
Perspective
This exercise was definitely useful in terms of thinking about perspective and where certain lines should go/what angles they’re at, for example if the top right corner of the door frame goes here, where does the window begin etc. At the same time I was also like, where’s the shading? I definitely realised that colouring in is the juicy part for me!

Happy Women’s History Month! We’ll be celebrating all month long by sharing some of the amazing work in our collection and on view by women artists.
First up is this powerful drawing by Philadelphia artist Ellen Powell Tiberino. This image isn’t a literal depiction of doctors in surgery, but rather the artist’s own “mental impression” of this environment and the fears and forces that motivate her. She envisions an operation as a scene of frantic activity, with doctors and nurses crowded around a patient while Death mocks their efforts nearby.
See this work in “Art of Care,” an exhibition that explores how artists have portrayed medical care over the last century, through April 4.

Feelings can become so intense between two people. There’s a battle between giving in to those emotions and keeping your guard up. It can be one of the scariest moments right before your wall falls, but afterwards you feel free. At the end of the day, always trust your intuition and express yourself.
Don’t be afraid to admit an emotion or evoke an emotion. You feel me?
Love is beautiful and I will always search for it in all aspects of life.
