My ★★ review of Iron Man on Letterboxd https://boxd.it/20nFbL
I'm afraid this one just doesn't do it for me. I get that Tony's meant to be flawed, but I'm not convinced you're really supposed to dislike the hard-drinking, womanising, war-monger you meet in the first act. He could have used a 'save the cat' moment, OR they could have gone the opposite route and done something like what happened in District 9: make the protagonist so unlikeable that the only way for them to go is up. I still quite like the first hour, seeing Tony in his workshop is really satisfying and I love RDJ's expression of innocent glee the first time he gets his suit to fly. One choice I've got to take issue with though is the amount of overlapping cross-talk in the dialogue - it makes sense in Uncut Gems, where it's supposed to stress you out, but it just makes Tony's scenes with Pepper unpleasant to listen to.
