The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! – David Zucker, 1988
My boyfriend and I watched this for a virtual movie night together and it was…quite a trip. He told me not to look anything up ahead of time, and honestly I wish I had, that would have better prepared me for the hour and a half of utter ridiculousness I was about to endure. At the very least, knowing that this was by the same people who had made Airplane! would have helped. The jokes are just as dad-like, and also extremely dated. The picture above best represents the overall tone of the film; sexism, casual assault, and an unflattering reflection of the kind of thing that was okay in the ‘80s but would absolutely not fly today.
I don’t mean to say the film was bad. Seeing O. J. Simpson pop up was a fun surprise, albeit a mildly uncomfortable one. For as many jokes that made me groan, there were at least a couple moments that elicited a genuine chuckle. Some of it was actually funny. Though again, a lot of it made me extremely uncomfortable. I think that was the biggest problem, that the jokes just made me cringe instead of laugh. The properly funny moments were overshadowed by too many that were not. I think if I’d been in the right mood, and not been ready to take it quite so seriously, I’d have liked it more. Be prepared to suspend your disbelief and allow yourself to be swept up in how dumb this movie is.
