So what do I do with my rare Saturday off?
I go out to a friend's house and dig out stumps, cut down trees, plant other trees in Rocky soil and move rocks. Then I play chauffeur.
I really do love running the chainsaw. It's been a long time. Knock down a few trees and you get a lot more light. Whittling away at a large stump from a tree that came down during a storm. Another weekend I'll rope up and roll the thing over and get the last big root. Then I can peavey the thing off the lawn.
I always dream of homesteading. This place (my friends) was a homestead. Last wagon train stop before town and an Indian/white trading location. It feels good to be on that land. Now that I'm old enough to know what I want to do, it's too late to do it. But every time I get a shovel in the dirt, or get out the ax, things feel right.
