I have always wanted to write about this movie which is a realist portrayal of love(not the usual cheesy ones) and hardships in a politically tumultuous times. Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, Cold War guides us through the emotional journey of a Polish couple, living in the post World War era. The title of the movie may suggest a political thrust, but this is a movie in which political conflict is incorporated into the characters lives and relationship to a point where the political dynamic engulfs itself into the characters’ intractable cold war of heart. The cinematography and 4:3 aspect ratio acts as fitting pieces to a breathtaking tale and juxtaposing with the film’s main themes of freedom and imprisonment. I would call it a dark musical cause of the way it uses silence and leitmotifs to describe the inner turmoil of characters who can’t live apart at the same time can’t be together. I loved the way Pawlikowski used time leaps and left it up to the audience to fill the episodic gaps in the narrative. The perfect timing of music, whether it be old Polish folk, jazz or rock-and-roll, gives the movie its momentum and presents the characters in their relative stages of relationship. Cold war tells us about flawed and beautiful nature of human connection. There may come a time of insecurity and jealousy in a relationship that will compel us to choose paths that we don’t want to tread on. Its those choices that gives Cold war a disturbing sense of suspense. It uses love as a tool, which strengthens our capacity to stick with someone, because we see that their failings don’t make them unworthy of love.

  • How the hell am I supposed to get anything done at home now that The Amazing Devil put The Horror and the Wild on Spotify? I start to write, and then I find myself, five minutes, ten minutes, fifteen minutes later, just listening. If I lose my job over this, I’m holding Madeleine Hyland and Joey Batey personally responsible.

    Talking about music again)
Almost all Slavic ethnic groups have such a specific genre of folk song as the song for the call of spring. In pre-Christian times, people believed that such a song would accelerate the awakening of nature from winter sleep. In Ukraine, these songs have several names: vesnyanky (“vesna” means spring), gaivky (gai means grove), perehuky and fast songs (because even during Lent spring will not come without any help). This is another genre of songs that could be sung during the Lent, but only unmarried young people were involved.  Vesnyanky come in several forms. It can be just songs that are sung very loudly by different bands of youth, songs-games and dances during which they sang (the most famous example is Kryvyi tanec, literally - the Crooked Dance).

The vesnyanky have their own regulated time for them to sing. They are usually sung since March 14 (according to the traditional calendar it is the day of St. Martyr Eudokia, and in the people’s name is simply Yavdokhi) or from April 7 (Annunciation).  Singing ends on the Trinity. Places to sing often choose groves and hills.

The action is as follows: young people gather in groups (groups can be formed according to the principle of who from which street of the village is, as well as girls can sing against boys, groups from different villages can also compete),  grops get out of the village and , in a very loud manner are competing for the better or the nimbly  sang. Sometimes vesnyanky are playful or even a little offensive, but the central theme is, of course, the call of spring.

In videos below you may see some variants of performing of this kind of songs
