Did you guys know that Canada is made of 68% coniferous forest ~ ? 💛

#🙃 #.otverzhennyy ( headcanon ) #lots of similarities with folks with Russia due to climate and all that #I find it so interesting and I'm such a huge nerd for my country history

Getting into folk, bluegrass and country was not an outcome I foresaw before watching Justified but it is not an unwelcome one

#i recommend Amazing Apples' folk bluegrass & country mix playlist on spotify #has a nice selection and also some of their own songs which are delightful #they opened for a saw doctors concert i went to and mum agreed that she'd have been happy for them to play the whole time #(we later saw them play in a pub which was a v fun evening all round) #my own post #justified

Maybelle Addington Carter (1909-1978), one third of the original Carter Family, Johnny Cash’s mother-in-law, and country music’s first guitar hero. On the original Carter Family’s recordings, Maybelle sang harmony and played lead guitar, with Sara Carter accompanying on either the guitar or autoharp. She used a total of four different guitar styles throughout her career, and I’m going to post songs with examples of each one below.

Her most famous and most imitated style of picking is what’s known today as “the Carter Scratch,” where the melody is played on the bass strings of the guitar with the thumb and the rhythm played with the forefinger on the treble strings. Every country guitar picker begins his career by learning the Carters’ “Wildwood Flower.” (We can also thank the Carter Family for mangling the words of the song beyond recognition.)

Maybelle also played a ragtime blues fingerpicking style that she learned from a Black musician named Lesley Riddle, who was a fine musician in his own right and helped the Carter Family collect songs to record. Below is “Solid Gone,” a re-working of the original Carter Family’s “Cannonball Blues.”

Maybelle recorded quite a few songs using a flatpick. On her earliest flatpicked recordings, there’s not much difference between her flatpicking style and the Carter Scratch, but she eventually developed a fluid, bluesy style. Listen to the beautiful Mexican-flavored run in “You Are My Flower”:

Or the touch of boogie woogie she brings to the Delmore Brothers’ “I’m Leaving You” (which she played in F, with two different B flat chords. That might not sound impressive to non-musicians, but guitar players will get it):

Briefly, influenced by the popularity of Hawaiian music and possibly by ‘Esley Riddle, she played a slide guitar style. (In one recording session, she used a bottle of Sara’s perfume as a slide, and broke it.) She had stopped using this style entirely by the 60s and probably earlier. I’m not certain, but I think the original Carter Family recorded about 6 sides featuring Maybelle’s slide playing.

My Oscar Schmidt Guitaro - a kind of autoharp designed to be played like a guitar. They were made from 1964 into the early 70s. (You can see Sara Carter using one in the videos online.) As you can see, the body has a crack and one of the chord buttons needs glued back on. One of the bars also sticks. I’m hoping to get it back into playing shape this summer!
