I think it’s easier to read history books than to confront the world now. History books don’t have much suspense because you always know what happens. You know how it ends. And you know that no matter what happens, even if it’s terrible, it didn’t disrupt the course of history so much that it stopped you from getting to where you are now, and society from getting to where it is now. In the moment, you are safe. The past can’t hurt you. But the scary thing about history is that it is not confined to the past. It is in the making right now. We cannot live completely independently of the society that we’re in, because policies and current events affect us, and at a certain point it will be impossible to continue life as usual if we don’t change it now. I’m certainly guilty of that, doing homework, checking social media, and writing songs while everything seems to fall apart around me. However, it’s also unfair to expect me, a teenager, to put my own personal goals aside to stop this country from falling apart when those in power are doing nothing to stop it. Like the generations before me, I deserve to have an opportunity to live my own life and pursue my goals and trust that democracy and the environment will not collapse around me. These problems come from big corporations and government bodies, but they are blamed on young individuals like us—sure, if people stopped using plastic straws, it would help the environment, but the vast majority of carbon emissions come from only about 100 corporations or organizations who refuse to change their actions. It’s not fair. There is no guaranteed happy ending for us as a society. There is no guarantee that things will be the same in 50 years as they are today, or as they were 15 years ago. That is not promised to us, we have to make it. So vote if you can. My 18th birthday is next May, so I can’t, but if you can, I’m literally begging you to do it. Voting is one thing that we, individual citizens, have power over. So vote. Specifically, vote for Joe Biden. He sucks, but he’s a million times better than tr*mp. (Also, idc if you have a problem with me posting political shit, just know that this isn’t just politics anymore, the future of our society is literally at stake. Oh and if you support trump, kindly unfollow me and go fuck yourself. There is not a single valid reason to support him. Period. If you do you’re either an idiot or evil or both.) I know electing Joe Biden won’t solve everything, but it will stop the damage Trump has brought to our country from getting worse and will give us an opportunity to change the future.
