remember when rodimus didn't get a dying message in DotL and it was like "oooh wonder if that'll be significant" and it's basically bc instead of a Sad Ominous Somber Goodbye he delivered this absolute gem like a fucking legend

anyway on a sillier note i think the real problem getaway had once he took over the LL is that he completely misunderstood what comic he was in. he THOUGHT he was in a comic that was about big grand serious space adventures and in reality he was in a dramedy that was 50% nonsense by design. nobody but rodimus was capable of captaining that ship outright because nobody but rodimus was capable of rolling with that ridiculousness unscathed.

there would have been a backup strip, in an ideal world, that was just Getaway Slowly Loses It Trying To Deal With All This Bullshit Everyone Is Apparently Just Fine With, For Some Reason. he's trying to actually find the fucking Knights and simply cannot understand why his crew, the machinations of the universe, etc. are conspiring to thwart this constantly. i would have paid so much to see that.

#getaway is obsessed with crafting a Grand Narrative for himself and doing something Big #unfortunately he is trapped in a story that is only like 25% that and nearly nobody on there gives a shit #if he'd been savvy he would have taken over TC's ship #that was the story happening in the BG that was ACTUALLY what Getaway thought the LL was about #idw#getaway

so i was thinking about getaway and his role in the comic (as you do) (ok, as I do, too much probably, hush) recently and came to the conclusion that I think part of the reason there was so much Diskhorse TM about him Back In The Day and all is that tbh, the introduction of Megs into his specific plotline kind of muddies it in a way I don't think was really intended. i get why it got folded into his arc once Megs joined the crew and I think not at least having him be part of it given Getaway's backstory and motivations would be a weird omission, but it becomes really easy with how much prominence Megs' presence in the crew gains in Getaway's plans that it begins to obscure his actual original motivations?

like right off the bat, Getaway was mad at Rodimus. his plan to hijack the lost light pre-dated Megs coming on board. his animosity at Rodimus pre-dated it. his actual motivations are less "get rid of Megs" and more "take control of the LL and take the credit once we find the Knights", the former just becomes a prominent part of that once he joins the crew. and on a purely metatextual level, Getaway was being set up before there were concrete plans to put Megatron on the LL. like Elegant Chaos, that's a plot that was reconfigured to bring that character into it, not something written because JRo requested and got Megatron following Dark Cybertron.

it's a really obvious way to make it easier to convince the readers why anyone would join Getaway against Rodimus without making them immediate unsympathetic villains, is the thing- in that way it kind of feels like it dovetails very naturally. you can have characters you still want the audience to like after the mutiny there now, because like, they have very good reason to be pissed as hell Megatron is not only there and walking free but also specifically in charge now. and you can have Getaway claim it as his primary motivation convincingly even as we the audience are more aware than most of the characters that it really isn't the root of it at all, more one additional branch to what he wants to accomplish overall. because as an MTO who had a hell of a time of it in a war that Megatron is responsible for, it is personal, even if it isn't actually, as Getaway tries to suggest, his original and primary motivation.

the trouble is that from a narrative standpoint, Getaway is a complete liar to basically everyone, even including himself somewhat. he's rarely in a position where the reader becomes really obviously reminded of that original motivation once his "no really, I just want to get rid of Megatron, for all our sakes" ruse comes into play. and the overall narrative of the story at this point is in other places and ways also leaning really hard on the What Do We Think About Megatron element, certainly at many points stronger than it leans into any Rodimus arc at that point, which only reinforces the perception it actually was Getaway's snapping point or something. which is where i think it becomes kind of muddled. I don't think it's unreasonable, and specifically in the kind of long form, serialized format MTMTE/LL took when it was coming out monthly, for a reader to have the fact it's not actually his primary motivation kind of... fall out of focus for them. it's less a failure to pick up on the subtext and more the narrative itself de-emphasizing it.

and when you take a step back from the page-to-page of it, you go like. well of course it's about Rodimus. Getaway is a character characterized from the ground up to be a foil to Rodimus. everything about him screams it. Getaway is what Rodimus could have been and half the reason Rodimus hates him so much is that. Getaway in turn hates Rodimus because he sees the other as someone who inexplicably, to Getaway, got what Getaway deserved but never had a chance to claim. obviously, Getaway's arc is about his relationship to Rodimus far more than Megatron. Megatron and Getaway don't really function as foils at all!

but there's a big chunk in the middle before the final confrontations etc where it feels like all Getaway talks about is Megatron, and you have the fact that the most notable and shocking thing he Actually Did was in service of harming Megatron specifically (Rodimus by proxy, but Megatron directly) with the Tailgate thing. and if you view that as the character actually being motivated by him- and you would be forgiven for doing so- the questions about the character look very different than if it's completely clear he's using that as an excuse to do what he wanted to do anyway.

(and as a sidenote, an interesting thing is that this, of course, has no influence on Rodimus' side of this story at all. which is really one of the clearer examples of how this arc is actually structured under everything. it's not like Rodimus' arc is about him being resentful that Megatron cost him his ship or whatever. if this arc was about Getaway's hatred of Megatron blinding him or whatever, that's where I feel you'd go with it. but Rodimus understands that Getaway's problem is with him just fine. it's more that because we never really see Getaway's actions on the ship in the same light, the narrative thrust feels less clear and concise about it than it otherwise might.)

and like. yeah, there's a lot less wiggle room of "but did he have a very good point even if he went a bit too far?" to Diskhorse TM in through that lens, I think. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm sure we'd have still had SOME, but so much of all that has centered on whether Getaway was right about taking out Megatron, which is much more something I think which sits on top of his character and actions, not something really at the root of it.

    #anyway. i love him. worst awfullest man. 10/10. #idw#getaway#meta
