Thinking about the creature I encountered in my dream who mocked me ruthlessly for my preferred pet names 😔😔😔
So, I keep seeing all this discourse around goblincore and antisemitism. Normally I hate wading into this kind of stuff, but since I do participate in goblincore (just look at my name), I feel I should say something. I’ve had this on my mind for a while now, especially since some of my family is Jewish. I mentioned this to my grandparents from that side, and they had no idea goblins were associated with it. My grandmother even has little goblin figurines in her house. That doesn’t mean the connotation doesn’t exist, of course, it was just never an issue they heard about. Thus I’ve been at a loss as I waded through other people’s opinions.
I’ve seen arguments and counterarguments and counterarguments to counterarguments. Everyone makes good points.
Taking this term away from n*zis is a good thing!
If you’re not Jewish, it isn’t a term you can reclaim!
Goblincore celebrates neurodivergeny!
Just use a different word then!
Keep the term goblincore but change the language around it and make goblinsonas less stereotypical!
This last is my personal favorite because it both asks us to be mindful of the antisemitic roots of goblins but also allows people to keep the term they enjoy most. Then again, what right do we have to use a possibly harmful term to begin with?
I’m also coming at this from a writer’s perspective. I write fantasy stories and I include goblins in them. I’m mindful to avoid antisemitic stereotypes, but is it problematic to use the term goblin at all? What is a goblin without those roots? Should everyone scrap goblins altogether? By doing away with goblins and goblincore, are we censoring the ugly past that came with it?
I don’t have the answer. Goblins are a staple in fantasy and have been for a long time. Rooting them out altogether seems like an impossible task, and possibly an unnecessary one at that, depending on who you ask.
My plan, for the moment, is to continue to use the term with the past in mind. I think it’s important to be mindful, to engage with the past, but not repeat it. We can make the idea of “goblin” into something better by remembering where it started.
Of course, if we need to adopt an alternative, I’d prefer cryptidcore. It’s mysterious, has wide connotations, and makes me feel okay with my strange habits and lifestyle. I will consider transferring over to it, I’d never want to be purposefully offensive, but for now, I’ll stick to the current tag.
I don’t know if my opinion means much but here y'all go. Hope this wasn’t the worst take in the world. Hope it made sense, too, because this was kind of a thought dump.
Today I broke two needles trying to finish one project. I will have to wait till tomorrow to get more needles that will fit the embroidery floss I’m using. I never thought I’d ask but is there a good brand of needles?
make art!! and i cannot stress this enough!! it doesnt matter if its not “good” cause there’s no such thing as bad art !!! art is art and its beautiful and comes in many forms so never hold yourself back from creating because the point is to create and not to impress others!!!!! so make art thats what life is all about!!
anyways! i wish to be a soft and courageous girl in, lets say, idealized victorian times, wearing bright floral dresses and talking to her cat about her romantic fantasies and amazing adventures when lounging in the flower fields near the woods thank you very much!
