These are the works of Edwin Deakin ( 21/5/1838 - 11/5/1923 ). He was known for his romantic landscapes and architectural studies. His depictions of dilapidated, dismal missions, such as the ones here, drew the most public attention.Β
In the fourth painting, ivy swathes the marble doorway in a chain of green. Above it, a row of stone strixes and gargoyles huddle close on their stone dais. The frost is a blanket covering everything, from the stone floor up to the furthest reach of the vines. Fresh snow lines the windowsill below a pair of French windows. The larger rectangular windows bear a stained glass depiction of the Nativity and the Three Wise Men, whereas the small rectangular windows above bear the official crest of the HΓ΄tel de Cluny (Mansion of Cluny).
In the last painting, we see uneven cobblestone paths, ogival archways, elaborately carved pillars of marble, and stained glass windows where the colour has faded from age. There is a confessional built into the wall, dusty from disuse. High above there are torn, discoloured tapestries.Β
Overall, the atmosphere that Deakin paints is sepulchral and grim, almost vampiric.Β

Yesterday I bought a book by Robert Louis Stevenson βThe Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hydeβ and now I have a complete collection of iconic horror monsters. βDraculaβ by Bram Stoker, βFrankenstein"by Mary Shelley and βThe Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hydeβ by Robert Louis Stevenson are a classic trio of 19th-century English works in the Gothic genre, which gave root to the modern horror novel and became legends, as well as their immortal characters. After reading βThe Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,β I want to do a comparative review of all three works, talk about what story I liked the most, and what makes these monsters so iconic. What do you say?
sweet little aesthetics: the soft goth β‘
~ black ruffle socks, dainty black heart pendants, glossy dark nails, black lace gloves, and pretty silver rings
~ listening to The Cureβs βDisintegrationβ whilst candles flicker softly in the darkness
~ taking respectful afternoon walks amongst the cemetery grounds
~ musky and deeply-scented perfumes or colognes, forest inspired candles, black and white rose bouquets, the Ceccoli tarot deck, and sweet amber incense
~ drinking black tea whilst reading classic gothic literature or poetry
~ black mary jane heels, velvet ballet flats, or shiny creepers
~ dark lace handbags or faux-leather crossbodys, bat or cross-shaped lapel pins, black chiffon skater skirts or straight black trousers, little pentagram earrings, a soft smoky eye, a black blouse with a loose bow at the neck, and a sweep of snowy highlighter upon the cheekbones!
