    GSTIN not mandatory for MSME registration

    Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) should register with the Government Udyam registration system. The government has made it much easier for MSMEs to register on this platform. The registration site intends to provide single-page registration, minimise processes, and save time when registering any MSME.

    Previously, GSTIN (GST Identification Number) was required for MSME registration on the Udyam registration platform.

    However, the government has received multiple concerns from various MSME Associations claiming that the required requirement of GSTIN is interfering with the MSME registration process. Many businesses are excused from filing GST Returns as required by the GST Act or notification.

    Now, entrepreneurs and proprietors who are excluded from filing GST returns can establish their company as an MSME on the Udyam Registration platform using only a PAN card and no GSTIN.

    This facilitation would make it easier for various micro-firms, such as skilled craftsmen, artisans, and other enterprises in the informal and unorganised sectors, to register.
