    Now: There’s More

    Melanie

    November 14, 2020

“Why are you asking me this?”

Melanie pushed herself off the table she was leaning on, the pain in her chest almost as bad as that night.

It was a memory she would forget, if she could.

Chan was still propped against his desk, looking hesitant again as he stared back at her.

“Well that’s what happened with you,” he replied slowly. “But the next day… When you were still sleeping on my couch... There was a lot more that happened.”

She was confused, eyebrows furrowing as she looked at him for a moment.

“What do you mean?” she finally asked. “What more could’ve happened? Jisung and I broke up. That was it. Then we talked the next day…”

    “Well…”

    Chan smiled somewhat guiltily.

“We never told you what happened when Changbin found out.”

    Then: Shattered Glass

    Melanie

    March 29, 2019

Melanie was sitting at Jisung’s kitchen table, their homework sprawled across its surface like it’d been so often lately. Her pencil was in her mouth and she was chewing on the end of it as her mind traveled a million miles away from pre-calculus.

Jisung was sitting in the chair across from her, legs tucked beneath it, putting so much intentional distance between them it was making her chest hurt.

No footsies under the table, no sitting side by side, their arms occasionally bumping one another’s before they were grinning playfully, no lingering eye contact, no spontaneous kisses…

She’d felt him pulling away for months now, but these last two weeks it’d been so undeniable Melanie was unable to ignore the tightening knot in her stomach.

Still, he had gotten two tickets to Prom next week like they’d talked about, and she thought…

    Maybe if he’d bought those…

It wasn’t them he was upset about.

Maybe he was pulling away because of something else.

    Maybe she could fix it.

“I finally found a dress for Prom. I think Chan and Changbin were about to kill me,” Melanie broke the palpable silence, glancing up from her homework to look at him.

Jisung was slightly startled by the sound of her voice- that had been happening a lot- looking up with slightly widened eyes.

“What?” he asked, as if he hadn’t heard her.

“I… I got a dress for Prom,” she repeated tentatively, eyes darting across his face. “You… have the tickets, right?”

She was attempting to keep the subject going; to distract herself from the sudden sense of foreboding she’d been feeling in his presence lately, the knot in her stomach growing tighter.

“Um-” he swallowed hard enough for her to see, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah, yeah I’ve got them.”

Melanie was staring at him, watching as Jisung’s eyes couldn’t seem to meet hers, his fingers wiggling the pencil still sitting limply in his hand, and she realized she had to say something...

“What’s wrong?” she asked, voice louder than she’d meant it to be, pulling Jisung’s eyes to her on reflex. “Why are you…?”

She motioned towards his hands- one shaking his pencil, the other still running through the strands of his hair- feeling oddly flustered.

    “Did something happen?”

Melanie hated to be so persistent, but she needed to know; know why Jisung was being so weird, why he was keeping her at arm’s length-

“Is it your parents?” she kept her voice gentle as she brought up the delicate subject. “What’s… what’s going on, Sungie?”

For a moment, it looked as if Jisung was frozen in his chair, just staring at her with slightly widened eyes, and the expression on his face- conflicted and sad- had Melanie’s heart racing in her chest.

    “Mel-”

The feeling that something bad was about to happen- the suffocating bubble that’d been lingering in her chest- was now expanding, and she watched as Jisung pulled his fingers from his hair, dropping his pencil atop his notebook.

    “I… I can’t do this anymore.”

She was silent, hands limp on the table, heart beating faster.

    “What?” she whispered.

“I-” he tripped over his own words. “I can’t be with you… anymore.”

The bubble in Melanie’s chest had popped, sending a sharp pain through her insides, the tightness of her throat still lingering, corners of her eyes burning-

“What?” she asked again, voice catching. “I- why?”

Jisung didn’t answer right away, anguish on every feature of his face as he stood from the table, seemingly unable to sit.

“This isn’t right anymore, we just, we-”

He turned to her, his words not making sense, Melanie’s body rigid against the back of her chair, watching him, hoping this was all just a horrible dream-

“I shouldn’t have kissed you, that night my mother left after Homecoming,” he all but whispered. “I’m sorry, Melanie, I wasn’t- I wasn’t thinking, I-”

“But you said you wanted to,” Melanie was slowly standing too, speaking more quietly than usual. “You- you said you liked this- liked us-”

Her voice was breaking, words high-pitched and somewhat desperate as she stared at Jisung.

Her best friend, her boyfriend, her first and only love-

    “I did-”

“You said you feel better when you’re with me-” she was louder now, stepping away from her chair. “-you said I make you happy-”

The knot in her stomach was so tight, it was hard for her to breathe, Jisung running a hand through his hair again, fingers shaking bad enough she could see them from where she was standing.

“You did, you- you do- and I thought-” Jisung was choking on his own words, the corners of his lips pulling into a frown. “I thought it was more than friendship, Mel, but it- it wasn’t- and I’m so sorry-”

She was frozen again, the sharp pain in her chest manifesting, spreading, like her body was glass and he’d sent a bullet right to it, cracking every surface.

“It… wasn’t?” she asked weakly, hoping she’d heard him wrong. “You… you never- you didn’t like me?”

“I thought I did,” Jisung said quickly, sounding just as upset, just as broken as she did. “You always made me feel better- you still do- and that night I- I thought it was more, I-”

And Melanie’s mind was racing through her memories like a flipbook, thinking of the moments they’d shared in the last six months of their relationship.

Their first kiss in the yard, Jisung’s cheeks still slightly wet from the tears he’d shed for his mother, her crumpled note in the grass between them-

Their kiss after Christmas, when she’d given him the headphones to help block out the bad and the star to remind him of the good, that he wasn’t alone-

His mother cancelling dinner plans last minute due to her second job, Jisung’s disappointed face when he’d gotten the text, Melanie trying to comfort him and the two of them kissing so hard she couldn’t breathe, losing herself in it-

Their most intense moments of affection… had always followed something Jisung wanted to forget about.

And she’d been too caught up in him to notice.

“Mel…” Jisung’s desperate voice brought her back to the present, and he took a couple steps closer, eyes darting across her face. “I’m… I’m sorry-”

    “You used me,” she whispered.

Melanie turned to him, vision blurry now on the edges, tears filling her eyes as she stared at him. A desperate and painful anger was surging through her veins as she looked at Jisung- her supposed best friend, someone she trusted, someone she’d already fallen so hopelessly in love with-

    “You used me!”

She walked close enough to push him, shoving hard on his shoulders as Jisung stumbled slightly.

    “I’m sorry,” he whispered quickly.

“I trusted you!” she was yelling, pushing him again, watching him stumble slightly once more, the frown on his lips shaking slightly. “You were my b-best friend and I-”

    “I’m sorry, Mel, I- I didn’t know-”

His eyes were glassy, nose slightly pink, telling her he was on the verge of crying himself, but she didn’t want to see it, couldn’t look at his handsome face, shoving him again as more tears trickled from her eyes.

“You did know, you just didn’t want to tell me!”

All that time since January, when he’d been putting slightly more distance between them, hanging out with friends more…

Melanie realized Jisung had known- content to let her wonder-

“I wanted to tell you, Mel, I just- I didn’t want to hurt you-”

There were definitely tears in his eyes now, and it only made the pain in Melanie’s chest that much more intense.

He was hurting too, and she wanted so desperately not to care.

“So you lied instead?” she asked, voice squeaking slightly as she blinked through more tears. “You let me believe this was real?”

    “I-”

“I trusted you, Jisung!” she was wiping impatiently at the tears on her face, yelling again, saying the same things. “You’re my best friend and you- you let me just- you-”

But the words, they weren’t coming together right anymore, throat too clenched up to speak. Jisung took a step forward, a single tear falling from each eye as he reached out.

“Melanie-” he was pressing his lips together, swallowing hard. “You’re my best friend, too, that’s why-”

But she was shaking her head, unable to hear it, unable to look at him any longer, pushing his arm away and backing up towards the table, body feeling shaky and almost unmanageable.

“You’ve got a funny way of showing it,” she choked out.

Quickly, she snapped her textbook shut, clumsily grabbing her bag from the floor and stuffing that and her notebook inside before yanking the zipper closed.

    “I’m leaving.”

She threw the bag on her shoulder, watching Jisung hurriedly wipe at his face before looking at her.

    “Mel-”

“I don’t wanna hear it,” she talked over him, voice loud in the empty kitchen. “You’ve said enough. Don’t. Just- Just leave me alone. Okay?”

Melanie didn’t wait for him to answer, walking as fast as she could through the kitchen and towards the front door, turning the knob with trembling hands and yanking it open, slamming it harder than she’d intended behind her.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For several minutes, Melanie was walking, pressing her lips together against the sobs catching in her throat, mind racing and yet oddly numb as she focused on the methodic movement of her feet.

    Jisung had left her.

Jisung had never liked her the way she’d liked him, and she’d been played for a fool for six months.

    Used.

    Lied to.

Looking up, she realized she’d unintentionally walked to the all-too-familiar neighborhood next door, her heart clenching a little in her chest.

    Changbin

She needed him; she didn’t know if she could be alone right now when everything felt so empty.

Melanie was still walking, moving down his and Chan’s street now and stuffing her hand into the pocket of her jeans for her phone, unlocking the device. She was halfway through clicking on Changbin’s name when she remembered he was at his grandmother’s for the night.

He wouldn’t be home until morning.

For some reason, this made everything so much worse, her breath catching in her throat as more tears filled her eyes, her thumb trembling as she pressed on Chan’s name, bringing the phone to her ear.

It rang only twice before Chan answered, sounding so cheerful, like he was part of another world entirely.

“Hey Mel!” she could hear what sounded like video games in the background, explosions and muffled shouting. “What’s up, I thought you were with-”

    “Channie-”

Her voice cracked a little, and she bit her bottom lip, grip tightening on her phone.

    “Mel?”

The noise in the background ceased, and there was shuffling on the other end of the phone before Chan was speaking again.

    “Are you okay?”

“I’m f-fine, I-” she knew how scary it was, to get a phone call like this from a friend, and tried to keep her voice under control so she could talk to him. “Ji-Jisung, he… he broke up with me-”

There was silence for a moment as Melanie used her sleeve to wipe her face.

“Where are you?” he asked gently.

She glanced around, realizing Chan’s house was just up ahead, and she walked a little quicker.

“I’m almost at your door,” she replied quietly. “I- I just left his house.”

    “I’ll be right there.”

He hung up just as she was walking up his porch steps and not five seconds later, his front door was flying open, his eyes immediately landing on her face.

There was something about seeing him standing there- so concerned, puppy eyes warm and comforting as they met hers- that had the lump in Melanie’s throat expanding, eyes stinging once more. Chan took a silent step forward, and she crumpled, burying her face into his shirt as he wrapped his arms around her.

It was warm and comforting, but it wasn’t enough to heal the cold embedded in her chest.

After a few moments, Chan was leading her inside, shutting the door quietly behind her. The Bang house was empty- his parents were on a weekend trip to Vegas with Changbin’s parents, and his brother and sister were spending the night with friends- so the two of them were completely alone.

She sat on the couch, Chan grabbing tissues from the coffee table and handing them over. Melanie thanked him quietly, wiping at her face and attempting to calm down. He waited, sitting on the carpet beside her before his eyes were moving carefully between hers.

“Mel…” he began gently. “What the hell happened?”

Melanie bit her lip, putting the tissues to the side before looking back at her best friend.

And after taking a deep breath, she began to tell Chan everything.

    Now: Remember

    Melanie

    November 14, 2020

Melanie was making herself an afternoon cup of coffee, getting the energy she needed for her essay she was about to work on. It wasn’t due for quite a few days, but she figured getting started on it now would keep her ahead of her assignments.

There was laughter coming from the living room, and she didn’t have to look up to know who it was.

She would recognize Jisung’s laughter anywhere.

Still, she peeked over the rim of her coffee mug as she took a tentative sip, eyes darting between him and Emma who were sitting together on the couch as usual. His arm was around her, Emma snuggled close, the two of them joking about whatever Degrassi character was on the screen.

They hadn’t seen or heard her come into the kitchen, and as Melanie leaned against the counter, she watched Emma for a moment.

She was beautiful- all dimples, bright blue eyes and long, reddish-brown hair. She was easy-going and kind, but had a snarky bite to her that had made Melanie laugh on more than one occasion. When the girln looked at Jisung, it was like she was seeing him for exactly who he was, and adored him anyway.

Then Melanie’s eyes were wandering to Jisung, who looked the most carefree she’d seen him in a while. It was hard to tell with him- he was quite good at masking his emotions sometimes- but she knew him long enough to know when he was truly relaxed.

Emma seemed to make him happy- actually happy- and Melanie found herself wondering how much Jisung had told her; if Emma knew everything about Jisung’s parents, or their broken relationship…

Melanie took another quick sip of coffee, the heated liquid almost burning her throat as she swallowed too quickly, eyes glazing over.

She’d realized recently that she wanted that happiness for Jisung and for her too; the two of them to find someone else that held what they’d sought, but never found within each other. Melanie was glad Emma had come into Jisung’s life, with her calming aura and mysterious nature she herself had never had…

Melanie didn’t want Jisung to be sad anymore.

For the past few weeks, she realized this longing she had when she looked at Jisung- the tightness in her chest or the pull on her insides- it wasn’t a desire for another relationship...

Melanie wanted their friendship back instead.

She missed it- the jokes, the talks alone, the laughter, and the relentless teasing…

She wanted things to be normal; like before they’d ruined everything with a relationship.

Melanie wanted one of her best friends back.

Taking another drink of her coffee, she pushed herself off the counter, moving towards the hallway that led to the stairs. She’d been having these thoughts for the past few weeks- the urge to change and fix things- and she felt like she needed to talk to someone; sort everything out in her jumbled mind.

    Changbin

He’d know the next steps; he usually always did.

Gripping her mug in both hands to ensure it didn’t spill, Melanie walked down the narrow hallway, the echo of Emma and Jisung’s conversation drifting towards the stairs as she took the steps carefully.

When she made it to the top, she headed straight for the study room where she’d planned on meeting Changbin and Chan later that day to get her own homework done in her writing area.

She smiled to herself; that writing room was one of the best gifts she’d ever gotten from anyone.

What did she do to deserve a best friend like Changbin?

She passed the hallway bathroom, Felix’s deep voice carrying through the open door.

“-might be your shade. Or maybe a little darker, I’m not sure…”

“Exactly why are you dressed like this again?” Minho asked, apparently also in the bathroom.

“Tch-” Hyunjin’s distinct, condescending snort echoed into the hallway. “-it’s for my part in the play.”

At that moment, Melanie passed the doorway, glancing inside and spotting Hyunjin staring at his own reflection in the mirror with a full face of make-up and pursing his lips, which were a deep shade of pink.

They locked eyes in the mirror and he immediately stood straight, looking shocked to see her, and Melanie realized she’d stopped walking, staring at him.

Hyunjin was not only wearing more makeup than she and Emma had ever worn, he was also in a full-length, intricate gown, the fabric trailing slightly into the hallway. Minho was leaned against the wall of the bathroom, arms across his chest, looking amused while Felix was near the sink, an eyeshadow palette in hand, all three of them staring at her.

    “I don’t even wanna know.”

She put her hands up in surrender and started giggling, making her way quickly down the hallway. She could hear Minho laughing behind her, the silk of Hyunjin’s dress shifting around loudly.

“It’s for theater!” he called defensively, clearly having run out into the hallway, voice carrying down the narrow area.

“Uh huh-”Melanie didn’t look back, only raised a hand in a playful wave as she kept moving. “Sure-”

She rounded the corner before Hyunjin could say anything else, still giggling to herself.

How was Hyunjin just as pretty dressed up as a girl as he was just his normal guy self?

Melanie reached the open door of the study room, smiling a little as she made her way inside. Chan was sitting at his usual, jet-black desk, but beside him, the other desk was empty, Changbin’s laptop closed, his chair pushed in as if he’d yet to come in for the day.

Chan looked up, grinning automatically when he saw her.

    “Hey Mel.”

“Hey Channie,” she used her thumb to point behind her, giggling again. “Did you know Hyunjin-?”

“Is dressing up like a queen in the bathroom with Felix and Minho?” he finished for her, smirking a little. “Yeah, I know.”

They laughed together for a moment before Melanie’s eyes wandered to Changbin’s empty desk, her smile slowly fading from her face.

His absence had reminded her why she’d come up here in the first place.

    “Where’s Changbin?” she asked curiously.

“Bin? Oh, he’s… he’s at his Dad’s for the printer,” Chan replied, eyes darting from hers as he fiddled with the pencil in his hand.

    “Oh.”

Melanie nodded, feeling slightly suspicious; they still hadn’t bought a printer, so Changbin going to his Dad’s to use one was normal enough, but Chan acting weird about it...

He must’ve sensed her skepticism, putting his pencil quickly on the desk before looking up at her.

“What’s up?” he asked somewhat seriously. “You seem stressed.”

Melanie was stressed- even Hyunjin dressed as a beautiful girl couldn’t distract her from that- and she knew even though Changbin wasn’t there, Chan could help her, too.

He was normally quite good at giving advice.

“Yeah,” Melanie finally answered with a small sigh. “I am.”

Chan watched as she leaned against the accent table behind her, setting her coffee mug gently to the side before speaking.

“Remember when we were talking about…” she hesitated. “Jisung? And how long it’s been since… you know-”

    “Yeah,” he nodded gently.

“Well, I’m tired of this whole mess between us, too. And you said- You said the answer to getting over all of it ‘might be closer than I think’,” she said, eyebrows furrowing a little. “...but what does that mean exactly?”

Chan didn’t answer right away, his eyes darting across her face as if debating with himself about something. Then, quite abruptly, he was standing up, exhaling heavily and running a hand through his hair.

“Honestly, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this anyway…”

He walked across the room, Melanie watching in confusion as he shut the door quietly, turning back to look at her.

“What?” she asked, feeling slightly bewildered. “I mean, we did talk about it, I was just looking for an answer to-”

“Yeah, I know, but there’s more I need to talk to you about,” he interrupted, moving back to his desk and leaning against its surface, a pinch between his eyebrows. “I can explain...”

Melanie stared at him for a moment, wondering why Chan looked more serious than he even usually did when this subject was brought up; it was making her nervous.

    “Explain what?” she asked quietly.

Chan pressed his lips together as if trying to put his thoughts into words before speaking.

“Do you remember…” he began slowly. “The night you broke up with Jisung?”

Immediately, Melanie felt a painful tug in her chest, swallowing hard as she looked away.

“I mean… yeah,” she did her best to sound nonchalant. “Why?”

“Do you remember everything that happened?”

Melanie stared at him for a moment, confused by his question.

    “Yes…”

Her reply was soft, chewing on her bottom lip as she stared out the window of the study room.

    “How could I forget?”

    *everyone nods, mumbles agreement*

Changbin: I'll choose the first word, then you guys say what comes to mind. "Open."

    Felix: Up

    Hyunjin: Your mouth

    Lee Know: Wide

Han: *closes his eyes, opens his mouth* Aah!

Bang Chan: This was a mistake.

    LOVE,WARM LIKE WINE

(Han Jisung x Gn!Reader, lovie fluff <3, implied past abuse)

You were sleepy, both so sleepy. Not the “dry” kind of sleepy though, where your eyes sting and your bones ached. No. The kind of sleepy that was akin to the feeling of snuggling into the sheets freshly taken from the dryer. The kind where no matter how toasty warm your body is, you’re continually seeking more warmth. Time surely stood still as your heavy eyelids drooped in relaxation and ransom; unconscious ransom to Jisung’s heartbeat, giving in to his body heat and rising heart beat, an unspoken promise was made.

Han Jisung loved you. He really, really loved and cherished you. But he always respected your pace, not wanting you to feel pressured into a rush, which you were prone to from your past traumas in relationships. He was patient, and he was always going to take care of you, protect you. So, terrified of coming on too strong, he held back; all the cuddles, kisses, and incredibly deep, intense statements that were his truth towards you- for you- because of you. You were instantly his everything when your souls touched. And he knew, though you’d never say, not now at least, that you felt it as well. But you were scared, more than you’d usually be in a relationship, but this time, it was not because of the fear of the physical, the mental; you were afraid of his love for you, and you were afraid of your love for him. Because it was real. It was powerful.

But you did love him and likewise, you’d never leave him. You just needed time. Time to unlearn what had been beaten into your skin. And Jisung, nor you, ever realized how far you’d come in this long term relationship until he felt your face drowsily snuggle into the side of his cheek as you laid on the couch together. Arms that normally pulled away and kept to themselves were now resting on his chest.

But the boy didn’t dare move, no matter how much he wanted to embrace you back, he withheld. Even as the heat of pink and cherries spread throughout his flesh, up his neck. The giddiness was flooding his bloodstream, but he didn’t dare move.

In his peripheral, he could barely catch a glimpse of your eyes, closed peacefully in sleep. Peacefully. No hesitation, stiffness, fear, just...peace. Trust. Did this mean you trusted him? Fuck. Was that really a tear he felt racing down his cheek? He was glad you were asleep, you would tease the hell out of him for this. But he was soft, undeniably softened to the very core by you. It was your fault. All your fault, meanie- he told himself.

“Sungie?” You whispered, lowly, sweetly. He swore his heart was pumping out butterflies instead of blood. That was the only explanation for the carnal, instinctual need to protect you filling his veins. You made him feel like he could do anything, when normally he felt so useless. “Yes?”

His loss of breathe was evident, but in your half consciousness you didn’t catch it, nor the hearts swimming in his eyes. “I love you.” His throat was tight, but it was the easiest, truest thing he’d ever declared in his entire existence, “I love you.”
