1The reveal on a curly piece of Koa is so exciting to see, especially when you have only seen the wood in a rough cut and the grain wasn’t very visible when picking the wood out. It’s almost a shame to paint over it so I don’t and try to only glaze over it with thin coats of oil.

Writing system and pronunciation
These are the letters that make up the alphabet: a e i o u h k l m n p w ʻ.
Hawaiian is characterized by a large number of vowels and a syllabic structure that does not allow any consonant clusters. Syllables can have one or two vowels.
Long vowels are marked with a macron. ʻ is known as ʻokina and marks the glottal stop.
Grammar
Nouns do not distinguish biological gender, but they belong to one of two gender classes, which are only taken into account when using the genitive case in personal pronouns.
Adjectives follow the noun, while numerals precede it if there is no definite article and follow it if the noun is preceded by the definite article. Pronouns distinguish singular, dual, and plural.
Verbs are marked for tense, aspect, mood, causativity, and stativity using preverbal particles and prefixes. Suffixes mark transitivity and voice.
Dialects
Most dialectal variation, except for the Niʻihau dialect, have been lost. An important distinction from Standard Hawaiian is that Niʻihau does not use the ʻokina or macron.

February 15, 2021 - Day 8
What a joy it’s been to witness a real snowfall!! I’ve never seen anything like it. I was completely awestruck. I’ve always read about snow glittering, but I never really *understood* until today. It really does glitter, and it’s beautiful.
Today I:
- Pranced around in the snow!!!
- Finished editing and finally submitted my anthropology midterm. I feel like I generally got the material, but, at the same time, I’m not quite sure how the grading will go. I’m definitely a little nervous about it. That said, I know I still tried, and of that I’m proud.
- Read Flowers for Algernon (Daniel Keyes) and Into Thin Air (John Krakauer) as part of my reading challenges.
- Studied Hawaiian on Duolingo
- Made a rough outline of my summer class schedule. (Still waiting to hear from my divisor on some scheduling complications.)
My school has pushed some due dates back because so many people are struggling with finding reliable wifi, and we can’t drive anywhere else for better wifi with icy and closed roads. So, I’ve focused less on my studies today. I know I have a bit of time to work with, so I spent the better part of the day just enjoying the snow and learning things that aren’t directly related to my school studies. ❄️ Today I’m grateful for lovely, lovely snow.
