SUBLIME CINEMA #64 - GUMMO
Sometimes a film can make you feel cold and unsettled, but still utterly impressed at how it seems to come from nowhere, transmitting from a totally foreign galaxy. Gummo is a movie that begs questions such as: ‘where the hell did they find these actors, are they actually actors how on earth was this made, and why …. ?’ No easy answers here, but it solidified Harmony Korine as a visionary. And this film seemed to come from a very real place, even if I never ever want to visit that place.
Pieces of a Woman (dir. Kornél Mundruczó).
Screenwriter Kata Wéber crafts an insular script where [Vanessa Kirby]’s internal struggle and grief manifests the actions and stories of the people surrounding her in ways to reverberate the tragedy she experiences. It’s a staggering portrait of grief, but Pieces of a Woman falls apart after the intimate first act (somewhat purposely) yet how Mundruczó frames the couple’s drama through a punishing Boston winter makes the film particularly emotional.
It’s Evolving…
Looks much nicer with a title, I’m sure all would agree. The title also creates a feel, that lightens the topic a bit. I was definitely inspired by the awesome Lion & Eagle comics (see bottom pic) – with its amazing (far superior) illustrations, cool stories and sleek titles!
Another Round (aka Druk, dir. Thomas Vinterberg) x VIFF 2020.
[Mads] Mikkelsen and Vinterberg continue their fruitful storytelling partnership for a small but very relatable story of middle-aged dissatisfaction and malaise. Watching such a talented actor play a drunken history teacher for two-hours straight is also never not a total delight despite the inherent sadness and limited contentment of the very premise. However, I think we can agree some of us could use a drink right about now.
I’m currently working a free DVD Documentary. Here is a little promo for it. Let me know if you are interested in a copy
