“I Remember” from Dutch outfit Maida Rose, is a nostalgic easy going track about moving. Laid back guitars, whispery vocals and subtle background synthesizers, reminding me very much of bands such as Beach House, makes  this short song a great contender for the title of your new sad indie anthem. Heavily distorted background guitars are just enough to remind me of My Bloody Valentine, and really complete the conjoined feelings of moving on while reminiscing over the past.    “Their songwriting is inspired by the duo's personal experiences of heartaches and sorrows in their formative years, and Tales of Adolescence shimmers with luscious instrumentation and delicate vulnerability It describes the words that you never managed to tell your lover, and that now live on in your head. A perfect melancholic moment for a cold January day” Hope you’re hanging in. If you feel like you need a hug, this tune might do the trick as well. Maida Rose’s Debut album “Tales of adolescence” has just been announced along with the release of this single. Looking forward to hearing more. Cheers <3

    Frailty, dltzk (2021)

dltzk's second record of the year Frailty is more varied and impressive than Teen Week, though his music remains appealing and dislikeable for almost exactly the same reasons. Put plainly, the tunes here are instrumentally thrilling, lyrically tolerable and vocally forgettable. So still a mixed bag, still impressive for an 18 year old – and still enticing for what it may hint of the future.

    Earl Sweatshirt - Sick!

I still remember being a relatively new fan of rap music when I saw the clip of Sandwitches on Jimmy Fallon. The first time I watched it, I didn’t get it. I thought the lyrics were too much, the rapping was intense but average and I couldn’t connect with the aesthetic they were going for… but I kept going back. It was the energy and intensity they performed with. It was a no fucks given on national television type of performance that started my following of Odd Future.

Although many of the songs were dark, perverted and grotesque, the talent was there with Odd Future. Specifically I kept finding myself listening to Tyler and Earl, and read everything I could about the Free Earl movement. The music was good, but the storylines surrounding Odd Future and the mystery of their members, specifically Earl Sweatshirt, kept my interest piqued. Years went by, Odd Future broke up, but the solo careers of their members were just as interesting to follow. Earl distanced himself from the Free Earl movement and pushed back against the narrative around the situation, and while Tyler moved into the limelight, Earl was content with slinking into the background.

Don’t get me wrong, Earl has retained a strong following, but hasn’t achieved nearly the same mainstream success. His most recent release, SICK! will continue that trend. Fans of Earl will love this and eat it up, but there’s nothing on here that is going to change Earl’s status in the mainstream… but that’s how he would want it. His latest album clocks in at just 24 minutes and 5 seconds, but it’s dense and feels longer than that time stamp. The beats and production on this thing are unreal, and to me are the best part about the album.

Earl’s lyrics however stem from his feelings throughout the pandemic. Over the course of 10 tracks he reflects on family, his drug usage, and the isolation he felt throughout the pandemic throughout the album. God Laughs features Earl reflecting on his grandfather… “My grandfather spoke 13 languages, somehow never had something to say to Boot Raymond.” The best track on this album that I keep coming back to though is Tabula Rasa. Three great verses (highlighted by Armand Hammer) over a beautiful, simple backing beat has been stuck on replay for me on Spotify. Other highlights with beautiful production include 2010 and Fire in the Hole.

The downsides to this album have to do with Earl’s delivery on certain tracks. His voice on Sick! has an odd mix with the beat that sounds out of place throughout the entire song. On Vision, we get more beautiful production, but a mediocre verse from Zelooperz, and what could be interpreted as an anti-vax with Earl rapping “fuck out my face with syringe.” (Fingers crossed this is about hard drug usage rather than the vaccine…)

With SICK! Earl puts together another solid album that his fans will adore, but others will find hard to swallow. The highs of the album are Earl at his best; gritty, hard hitting lyrics over beautiful production.

    Score: 7/10

Listen to: Tabula Rasa, 2010, Fire in the Hole

    Avoid: Sick!
