    Collaboration creates community ~
For our ‘Hypnosis’ collection, the American artist Anthony Howe collaborated with us to create the ‘Infinity’ dress as well as the extraordinary ‘Omniverse’ sculpture for our runway in Paris, encircling the models in a state of hypnosis. This kinetic portal symbolised our relationship with nature and intertwines with infinite expansion and contraction, expressing a universal life cycle.
The ‘Infinity’ dress is engineered from an extremely fine mechanism that is hand-finished with layers of feathers that fly cyclical around their own centre infinitely. The dress took four months of making and was engineered in 3DS Max and rendered with Octane and then FabLight lasercut from stainless steel. Hundreds of wings were welded by hand with an Orion 12 jewellery welder, to then be assembled to four curved axles that are cast into a fiberglass epoxy corset. Fine gears are attached to synchronise their rotation and finally the ‘skeletal’ clockwork mechanism of the dress is embroidered with fine layers of white feathers, to interact with the wind delicately.

Explore the intricate process of the ‘Infinity’ dress with us inside the atelier.

“The ‘Hypnosis’ collection is a hypnotic visualisation of nature’s tapestry, the symbiotic cycles of our biosphere that interweave the air, land, and oceans. It also reflects the ongoing dissection of the rhythms of life and reasons yes with the fragility within these interwoven worlds.” - Iris Van Herpen

  • Haute couture spring 2020 review (part 2)

    Iris Van Herpen

You might not understand Iris Van Herpen aesthetics, but you have got to admire the level of craftsmanship that goes into making the clothing. The collection was titled “Sensory Seas”. There were two references: hydrozoa(a little known organism known to not age) , and the illustrations of Spanish neuroscientist and pathologist Santiago Ramón y Cajal.

The first look was a stunning black pleated gown with sheer mesh halter bodice which looked heavenly.

    image

The inverted box pleated dresses with pieces of chiffon fabric coming out of them were hideous. There were actually two versions of this weird dress.

    image

The stunning 3-D printed black sheer dress with shoulder cuts looks absolutely remarkable. The sleeves are to die for.

    image

The sheer gown with blue, chaotic 3-D waves all over it was just so weirdly beautiful. A similar look came later, this time in ochre color.

    image

There was also an asymmetrical cape gown with an interesting print that appears to be a reference to Santiago Ramón y’s illustrations.

    image

Then came this dramatic white cocktail dress in a lazer cut style, that looked like a huge white bird. The layers sit upon each other elegantly and move with even more elegance.

    image

Then came a silk dress with sheer bodice partially covered with pieces of twisted fabric, that descend down into a fuller skirt. A similar look emerged in blue and purple with signature Van Herpen colours. The bodice looks spooky, and the twisted fabric resembles veins, (especially in the second look) which is not pretty.

    image

Another gown in the signature Van Herpen colors followed, except it was much simpler in both silhouette and print. Very commercial.

    image

This is just as stunning as it gets. The nude fabric is the same color as the model’s skin, which is noteworthy.

    image

Then came this phenomenal gown with such a strong print and silhouette, that it reminds me why I love IVH so much. It would have been breathtaking even without the print, however, the print does add to the other-worldliness of the dress. This, according to me is the best look of the collection.
