“Three days later [Mary and Joseph] finally discovered [Jesus] in the Temple…’Son,’ his mother said to him, ‘why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere.’ ‘But why did you need to search?’ he asked. ‘Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?’”
Luke 2:46-49 (NLT).
Background on this passage: Jesus is twelve years old, and him and his parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover Fesitval-something they did every year- and Jesus wanders off, leaving his parents frantic looking for him for three days. This passage takes place when they find him in the Temple, talking to religious leaders about God. That scripture passage is the conversation between Jesus and his parents.
I can only imagine the worry in Mary’s eyes and the panic that Joseph’s heart felt when they thought Jesus was missing. I can almost hear that sigh of relief, yet sudden anger they felt towards their son when they found him. “How dare you wander away from us? Don’t you see how worried we were? We searched all over Jerusalem for THREE DAYS trying to find you, young man.”
All Jesus responded with was, “Didn’t you know I’d be in my Father’s house?”
Often times, I believe we get very caught up in trying to search for Jesus. We look for Him in other. In our job, our church, our lifestyle. We search for Him as if we don’t know where He is. But we do.
Verse 46 starts off with a pretty significant-maybe hidden- prophecy: Three Days.
Three Days is how long Jesus spent in the grave. Three Days spent overcome by death.
Three Days that had his disciples, family, and other onlookers wondering, “Will he truly rise again?”
Praise God, cause He did rise again. He rose, hung out for a while, then returned to His Fathers’ House.
(Can I get an ‘Amen?’)
We need not to search for Jesus because He is in our Father’s house.
We need not to search because I believe He is the one searching for us. He is calling us, searching for us saying;
“Hey, where are you? Dad wants you to come home.”
Three Days is how long Jesus was away from his parents; how long have you been away from God?
Do you know where He is?
