There’s something poetic and meaningful about the fact that Kagome gave up her privileged life in the modern era to give Inuyasha a life he’s never had. 🥺
This WIP Wednesday I'm gonna share a tiny snippet from a selection I shared on patreon last week. From Practically Magic, here's a bit about Inuyasha's life:
There were some nights, like the current one, where he absolutely loathed his roommate. Or rather, he was envious of the man’s disposition to socialize. Koga went out. He partied. He had semblances of relationships, and Inuyasha…didn’t. He’d occasionally go to the parties, and once in a blue moon he’d go out on a date with a woman, but…it wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted something stable and long term. He wanted quiet nights in where it was just the two of them. No woman he’d had previously dated gave him that impression that they were on the same page. They seemed to think “going slow” was dragging the zipper of his fly down at an excruciatingly slow pace whenever he backed away from their advances.
As stupid as it was, on nights like this he’d think back to that night when he was a kid, wishing on the shooting star from his parent’s rooftop. He’d wonder if that wish would ever come true. That one day he’d meet that woman. Sometimes he swore he’d dreamed about her. Each time he tried to see her face, he’d wake up, but the feeling in the dream was the same.
She was just as lonely as he was.

Nursing Battle of the Rival Lovers
When Kagome catches a cold in their travels, the group decides best to send her home to rest and recuperate in the modern era and soon reunites with her friends and Hojo who come to visit. However, unknown to the others, Inuyasha has set out to gather food and supplies to help Kagome get better, but soon joins her in the modern era with a special remedy to help. Meanwhile, Kagome begins to feel nostalgic for her old life and despite her cold, prepares to return to school and resume her education.
Kagome: Bring back Kikyo? I don’t like the sound of that.

I've noticed something quite intriguing, now I am wondering. Did Sesshomaru really do that? Moroha and Hisui only had white fabrics while the twins have light purple and light blue. If he did, that's freaking sweet! ♡(.◜ω◝.)♡
(The request is coming along exquisitely! just making some conversation icons with some good expressions on the characters that are being used. (♡ >ω< ♡))
I finally finished drawing Kagome with the famous strawberry dress 📷
Who in their right mind has not ever wanted that dress?
Maybe it gets better in later episodes — I hope to god it gets better in later episodes — but all this inane expository internal dialogue the show keeps giving Kagome is really doing her character dirty. Because having her slowly sort through and explain things the entire audience already figured out 3 episodes makes her look rather stupid and obnoxious, but when you cut those parts out you get a character with a strong sense of right and wrong and compassion, and a full willingness to call anyone out that violates those morals. Kagome doesn’t care who it is or how powerful they are either; she is ready to throw down if it comes to that — verbally, physically, psychologically, whatever.
Kagome getting distracted by the beefcake.
(Warashi is also a romance between a normal Japanese girl and her half-Yokai boyfriend, from the same author as Mister Ajikko. It’s never been translated into English... but I remain so curious about it, and the way the author went from a cooking manga to a supernatural horror manga.)
The thing about Kagome getting stuck in the Feudal Era vs Inuyasha getting stuck in the Modern Era is that, whille I wholeheartedly believe they would both choose to leave everything they’ve ever known behind for the sake of being together, Kagome being the one to do so was the right decision, both from a storytelling and from a character developmente point of view.
It just makes way more sense because, between the two of them, Kagome is the one who had more things to lose. Her choice carries a heavier weight, higher stakes. Therefore, it is more meaningful. And she had a harder time making it than Inuyasha ever would.
Not to mention that, on the other hand, Kagome fits in the Feudal Era like a glove. Perhaps because during the series she practically lived there already or perhaps because that was always where she was supposed to be, in the end of the day. But she belonged there. Inuyasha, I think, would have a lot more trouble adjusting to the Modern World. Not only because of his appearence, of who and what he is. But also because of bureaucracy. And technicalities. And our crazy modern day to day routine.
Besides, the symbolism and character growth of it all is exquisite and most often than not we tend to overlook it: if Inuyasha had choosen to stay on her side of the well, that decision wouldn’t be unthinkable to someone like Kagome. She’s not a strange to love and how much it affects and changes people. And it wouldn’t be much of a sacrifice for Inuyasha to say goodbye to a world who had always despised him to be with the first person in years to actually care about him.
The only things he had to took in consideration were the fragile hope that maybe, just maybe, he had finally found a place to belong with the friends he made along their journey and the beacon of acceptance that came with saving the world. Sure, it would be a shame to let go of that now that he had it. But she was the main reason he even got that far, anyway.
But at the beginning, Kagome was a bit spoiled. She was raised surounded by friendship, comfort and people who loved her unconditionally. Her life was way easier than average. However, at the end, she gave all of that up for a world of hardship, danger and uncertainty when she still had the option of ease, safety and sticking to what she knew.
And she did it mostly to be with a boy who had spent his whole life being told and thinking of himself as worthless and unlovable.
It says what?
