Sophie hated being in Ex-Act’s base. She’d only been there for about five minutes and the thought of staying any longer made her feel sick. Most of the pirates on the ship had already left, probably for the same reason she wanted to leave. The only people who stayed either had no option or were drug addicts.
Speaking of drug addicts, she sat in the room with quite a few of them, with Andy and Cameron sitting on the other side of the room by the kitchen. It was tense between them and her, though occasionally one of them would say something and smiles or chuckles would break out. She sighed.
Ever since she fought with Mars, both verbally and then literally, she wasn’t sure she could ever get her old friend back. Whatever the empress did to her, it was rooted deep. But she wasn’t completely separated from reality. The way Cameron and Andy looked at her now… Mars was right. Ever since that day on the station, all Sophie did was try and force her point of view on them. She still thought that it was better for them to be out here than in the palace, but the way she treated them wasn’t right.
She shifted forwards on the chair, resting her head in her hands. She forced her focus off of them, trying to think of anything else. The person that flooded her mind was Mars, completely unbidden. Now that Ex-Act had Mars in their custody, she was worried about what they would do to her.
Well, nothing as bad as the empress already did to her, right? She thought.
The thought disgusted her. She couldn’t keep thinking about Mars’ and the empress’ relationship. Mars had a hickey on her neck for god’s sake, and the way that she gets defensive whenever someone talks about the empress was horrifying. Fontain had told Sophie that while he had made the decision to take her, Cameron, and Andy, the empress had fully kidnapped Mars, and to see Mars in love with that same woman made sorrow congeal in her stomach. There’s no telling what went on behind closed doors in that palace.
A hand grabbing her arm broke her out of her own head. One of the drug addicts scratched at her sleeve, their eyes full of hunger and not much else. “H-Hey. Got any Stop on you?”
She shrugged them off. “Go bother someone else,” she snapped. They cringed away and went to do what she said.
The door to Ex-Act’s office opened. The person themself peeked their head out and crooked a finger for Sophie to enter the office. She stood up and made her way over. They closed the office door behind her.
Mars sat at the far end of the room, Mag-Cuffs on her wrists—someone had returned her arm—and ankles. Sophie froze. She thought that Mars would be locked up somewhere else, not sitting in their office.
“Don’t worry about her,” Ex-Act said. “I’ve sent a subroutine into her implant, plays a sound louder than what anyone’s saying at any moment and obscures her vision. I can tweak it if we need to, but right now she can’t tell that anything is going on other than a strange song that increases in volume every now and again.”
“Why’d you kidnap her?” she asked.
They smirked. Sophie had never been in the same room as them before, Fontain had only ever talked about them, and he talked as if they were not someone anyone should ever cross. Coming from a pirate captain, that was very convincing.
“Mars is…” they mused, “…an interesting subject. Fontain told me all about how she came to be here, now, and that interests me. Someone from your time who holds as much power as she does is quite the feat. I’m hoping to learn quite a bit of information from her. Brag to other interested parties. Eventually, I’m planning to send her back with a few back doors in her cybernetics. Just in case. That should neutralize her whenever the empress sends her to disrupt my plans.”
“You’re going to send her back there?” she asked.
“I can’t keep her hidden forever. People make signals, even in this wide of a universe. I’d rather ride the high of stealing the most important person in the Empire, then send her back without any repercussions.”
“Please. She can’t go back there.”
They raised an eyebrow. “Go on. Why can’t she?”
She paused. “The empress does something to her. I don’t think their relationship is healthy.”
“You’re saying the empress…” they paused, emphasizing their words, “…is abusive. The ruler of an Empire isn’t the epitome of a perfect partner, I can guarantee you that.”
“Well, I know, but…” Sophie’s eyes landed on Mars. “I don’t want her to have to go through that ever again.”
“She would very much disagree with you,” they replied. “I think she’d rather get back to the empress or die trying than anything else.”
“The empress… I don’t know. Brainwashed her. Or something. I mean, she’s the person who stole her from her own time and forced her to become a killing machine, and she’s okay with that? She’s in love with that person?”
“We don’t know what happens in the palace. And as much as I care about your input, which is why I brought you in here, this whole thing is bigger than you or me. The powers that rule this universe would crush us if we so much as disturb the nest. Unless you can figure out a way to keep her and keep me away from the bulldozer that is the Empire, then be my guest.”
She thought for several seconds, her mind clawing at something, anything.
“We can find a way to go back to our time,” she said. “Could that work?”
“I’m not really the temporal science type,” they replied. “But if you have access to the science part, somehow, I do have the resources and the tech available. Trust me, I want to deprive the Empire of Mars just as much as you do.”
“We’ll find a way. Someone actually brought us to the future, and Fontain knows who that is.”
They grinned. “Then let’s talk to Fontain, hmm?”
Seven years ago (From Sophie’s perspective)
“Hi, I’m Sophie.” She extended a hand out.
Sera shook it. “Nice to meet you. I’m Sera. This is Andy and Cameron.” She gestured to each person sitting next to her as she spoke their names. “I’m so glad someone showed up. It would be kind of awkward if nobody else showed up.”
“I’m surprised anyone was interested in a D&D club,” Andy said. “I mean, this place is for outdoorsy people. If it were… climb a super tall mountain five states over club, now that would get a ton of visitors. Not to mention that this school has maybe five students total.”
“I think there’s more than that, actually,” Cameron commented. “There are ten people in my calc three class.”
“I’m not counting the people taking calculus,” they continued. “Other than you, anyone who can do math obviously wouldn’t be interested in a D&D club.”
Sophie hid a chuckle behind her hand. “Uh, nice to meet you all.”
Sera scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Ignore them. They’re like this always.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” she said. She took a seat at an available desk next to everyone else. They were in one of the smaller classrooms in the English building on campus, somewhere that Sophie rarely went. She looked back up at Sera.
“Okay, first thing’s first,” she opened up a folder and pulled out a sheet of paper. “We need you to fill this out, just so we have some information to send back to the professor who’s sponsoring us, so like student ID and stuff, but also some info so that we know how to address you and all of that. You brought a pen, right?”
Sophie accepted the paper and reached into her backpack to fish out a pencil. After answering the first question, her name, she saw the next question, asking for her pronouns. She felt a weight lift off of her shoulders. She wrote those in, then moved on, filling in her student ID number and grade in school. Other questions included: ‘What is the best class in D&D and why is it the bard?’ and ‘Are you prepared to deal with our bullshit, yes or no?’ The final part at the bottom read ‘by signing below, you agree to join our friend group.’
Sophie snorted and signed.
“Welcome aboard,” Sera said, accepting the paper from Sophie. “The questionnaire was Andy’s idea, by the way. We could’ve just scanned your student ID with the little scanner thing that Dr. Clemens gave us.”
“Lemme see,” Andy said. “I want to know the answers to questions five through seven.” They made grabby hands at the paper until she handed it over.
“What, you don’t want to know…” Cameron peeked at the paper, “her student ID number? You can check out library books under her name and she’ll get in trouble when you accidentally drop them off of your balcony.”
“We’re not using anyone’s student ID’s for anything,” Sera said with a glare towards him.
“Why are you using library books in a way that you could drop them off of your balcony?” Andy asked.
“Okay, maybe I was playing book frisbee golf and I grabbed one of my library books. Not that it matters.” He crossed his arms. “I’m just throwing ideas out there.”
“And books, apparently,” Sophie replied.
Andy let out a bark of laughter. “Yes! Perfect. I’m making you part of the friend group immediately. You can’t escape now, you’re funny.”
Sera laughed. “God. I’m so sorry.”
Sophie smiled. “Don’t be. I needed friends like you all, I think.”
Content warning: forced imprisonment, kidnapping, slightly Yandere!Avery, but no explicitly sexual content.
Imagine being Avery’s business-rival kind of person. You have this sharp yet amiable banter going on, and you think Avery is a bit strange sometimes but you don’t see him as an asshole. You see him bring partners on the younger side to fancy restaurants around town but don’t think much of it. Well, maybe you are a little disappointed at the thought that you are slightly off his preferred age range, but you aren’t crestfallen. This isn’t some naive school-age crush, just… a fondness. You decide to find someone else, go on dates yourself. All should be well.
All was well, actually, and your slight twitch of heart towards Avery starts to fade. Perhaps Avery noticed, perhaps he doesn’t. It is supposed to end like that, simple and clean, like all good things do. But imagine that you end up taking the upper hand in that little rivalry of yours. You’ve always been good at your job, but a particular breakthrough meant that you ran ahead of Avery in a blink of his eyes. Avery acts in all good humour and constructive rivalry but there is a glint in his eyes that you miss.
In retrospect, perhaps you should’ve seen it coming. All you can do it trace back in your mind to where it all went wrong, fell apart in pieces. You can’t tell, however, shivering from a cold fever in somewhere that is presumably Avery’s basement. Avery came in a while ago to kiss you sweetly, finally content to see you all helpless and dumb, your body stripped of the smart business suit and exposed bare. He likes you this way better, trying to bargain and plead with him as if you still hold a modicum of control, too naive to understand what is truly going on.
Did you really think a bit of money could keep you safe in this town? You may be better than him in business, he’ll give you that, but connections are everything. Your existence will soon be erased, with all the strings Avery pulled, and you’ll be his to keep. He hates that. He loves that. Frankly, he doesn’t know. He doesn’t care.
But Avery can deceive himself all he wants. Your voice still haunts him, quiet and thieving in the back of his mind, the words you whispered as he left the basement this morning. I was going to ask you for coffee, you asshole. And perhaps that coffee would’ve been nice. Perhaps.

“What is this place, Lemon Lady?”
Gale snapped out of her trance, now realizing she was wearing a puffy black coat and a cherry wool scarf with thick warm black pants. A tiny hand took hers, a hand that was colder than the winter gale surrounding them.
Josh stood there, gored, injured, the same as the last time Gale had seen him. In life and in death.
Gale fought a shiver as she glanced over his gored and horrid appearance and forced a smile.
“Josh, where is your jacket? It’s freezing out here.”
“I’m not cold,” Josh said, his remaining eye bright and warm, “I don’t feel cold anymore.”
This did not make Gale feel any better. With a great pang in her heart, she unwound her scarf and wrapped it around Josh’s tiny neck, fighting the urge to wretch as her fingers brushed the eye hanging from the child’s left eye socket.
There’s nothing he can do about it. Don’t make him feel any worse.
“There,” Gale murmured, “Snug as a bug in a rug.”
Josh giggled, the scarf far too big and hiding his grin and most of his face, “Thank you, Lemon Lady.”
“Of course, Little Lemon.”

Mars opened her eyes. The last thing she remembered was being carried into her cell. She was back in there now, handcuffed once again. Along with the never-ending ache in her body, her thumb throbbed with an even more persistent pain. It was swollen, and she’d likely injure it further if she tried to dislocate it once more.
There you go, Ex-Act, she thought. I went through your stupid little request. Hope you enjoyed the show.
She forcibly threw away every thought of Sophie that popped back into her head. The room across the way was now filled with pirates, most of whom had ignored her while she’d been unconscious. She also made sure not to make any sudden movements so that they wouldn’t start gawking. Instead, she focused on the empress. Mars had no doubt that she was pulling out every stop to try and find her.
The ship shuddered and she felt the pull of normal gravity take over the artificial gravity. It was heavier than Earth’s, meaning she was on a larger planet. The list of inhabited planets larger than Earth was pretty long, and that was assuming she’d been taken to an inhabited planet in the first place. Based on the clock her ocular implant provided (the time being the only thing it provided), she’d been on this ship for ten hours, give or take, since she wasn’t sure how long it had been since she’d first lost consciousness and when the ship took off.
She closed her eyes, trying to remember her studies. Planets within ten hours of Earth at light speed were pretty rare. They were three of the six Astrian planets; M’Aranado, the homeworld of the currals; X[Five], the planet used as corporate headquarters for the mining company X; and… that was all she could remember. What she did know was that it was at least fifteen hours minimum from Earth in any direction to make it to the edge of the Empire, which meant they’d taken her to an imperial planet. She had yet to imagine if that was the stupidest thing they’d done, or the smartest thing they’d ever done.
“C’mon,” the pirate leader said. Mars opened her eyes to see him standing at the doorway, covered in light from the force field.
Mars lifted her arm as far as it could go before the handcuffs went taut. “Like I can go anywhere.”
“Just making sure you were awake, princess,” he said. The force field went down and he pulled out a small box, about the size of a playing card deck. He approached Mars and stopped just outside of her reach, not that she was planning on trying to reach him.
He cleared his throat. “I’m giving you something to help with your… violent tendencies,” he said. “If you try anything while transporting you, it’ll stop you in your tracks.” He opened the box and pulled out a small patch. He peeled off a protective layer of paper, then leaned over and pressed it to Mars’ neck. It felt cold on her skin, but maybe that was just because her body temperature was higher than normal.
“Now. I’m going to uncuff you.” He pulled out a key and slipped it into the side of the handcuffs. As he did so, several other pirates slipped into the room. Some of them held their electric batons and stared down at her.
The cuff went slack and she tried to rub at her wrist, which had a blister forming, along with a long cut and dried blood, then remembered her other arm wasn’t there any longer. It was a weird feeling, trying to do something only to lack the tools required. She wondered if she’d ever get her arm back.
“Stand up,” the leader said.
She put her legs underneath herself and pushed past the aches to stand up. She was shorter than the leader, but as she drew to her full height he pulled back. Good to know she was still intimidating.
“Now you’re going to follow me,” he said. “My friends are going to follow behind you. Try to get anyone’s attention to help you and the patch should activate. If it doesn’t, my friends will incapacitate you.”
Mars glowered up at him. “Was the drug your idea, or is this standard protocol with Empire prisoners?” she asked.
“You’re dangerous. I’m just trying to bring you to Ex-Act with both of us still alive. So that they’re happy and I get paid. You know how it is.”
“I really don’t,” she replied, her voice deadpan.
He cleared his throat again. A nervous tic—Mars figured out. “Let’s go. They’re waiting.” He turned and left the room.
Mars didn’t follow right away, but a prod from one of the other pirates got her moving. As much as she hated this, she really didn’t want to go unconscious for a third time in the past ten hours.
The patch on her neck itched. She fought the urge to scratch at it. She’d never used drugs before, but she knew that scratching it would only release the drug faster. While she couldn’t think of any drugs that would stop her from doing anything violent, she didn’t doubt that these pirates had access to such a drug. That or it was a placebo. Maybe that’s why the leader was so worried.
Outside, the landing pads were busy. It was a public one, which Mars was unused to. There were at least one hundred ships in the area, with people coming and going with ever second. In the sky hung two moons, along with a sun. This had to be Astria Five. It was the only planet that had two moons out of the range she’d figured.
The leader immediately made his way to the pass-gate. He handed over his ID to the guard, who sat in their booth, a distinctly bored look on their face. They scanned the ID instinctively and stared at the results that streamed across their ocular implant. They blinked, looked at the group of pirates behind him, then gulped upon seeing Mars. They pressed a button on their desk and the force field in front of them lifted.
Mars could see the panic button, but behind the glass shield, there was no way she could reach it before the pirates restrained her. She also had to wonder what would happen if she tried with this mystery drug in her system.
The pirates shoved her forwards once more and they emerged into the edge of the capital city. The arrival station was also busy with people coming and going, either to their own personal ships or to public transportation across the city and off planet.
The leader took an immediate left past the doorway and approached a door with a voicecode lock. Mars decided it was now or never and dashed towards the closest crowd. She made a few steps before her body froze up and her momentum carried her to the ground. Her chin hit the tile floor and she grunted in pain. She couldn’t have caught herself with her one arm, either. She could only lay there as people turned and stared. A few people looked surprised to see her at all, especially on the ground and missing an arm.
The leader rushed up and grabbed her off of the floor. “Sorry. My bot malfunctioned,” he said to the people around her. When people accepted that and walked off, Mars felt worry press on her shoulders. They weren’t as stupid as she’d thought. She tried to say something, but the paralyzation extended to her vocal cords.
The leader handed her off to one of the pirates and whispered something to the door and it unlocked. He walked through and the pirates carried her down the stairs just beyond. She could feel the drug fade slowly, along with her heart rate slowing. As the effect faded, pain stabbed at her nerve endings.
At the bottom of the stairs was another door, this time with an actual lock. The leader pulled out a metal key and unlocked it. The door creaked open, rust caking the hinges. Just inside was a living space with three other doorways leading off of it. In it was a couch, kitchen, and dining table. The place was trashed, with alcohol, syringes, patches, and other miscellaneous trash all over the room. One person was passed out at the table, a bottle of some liquid still in their hand. Two more people lay on the couch, having passed out in the middle of some intimate activity. Someone else sat in the corner, their hands shaking as they tried and failed to peel off the paper on a patch, barely noticing that others had walked in.
“I’ll take her,” the leader said, accepting Mars. The other pirates stepped back. She caught one of their expressions and they looked uncomfortable.
The leader propped her up. “Can you stand?” he asked. She didn’t respond. His support dropped and she stumbled, but her legs could move well enough that she didn’t fall over. Pain fluttered up and down her body, similar to when her limbs would fall asleep.
“This way,” he continued. He grabbed her arm and yanked her towards one of the doorways. She stumbled and nearly hit the door with her face, but his grip kept her back. He knocked on the door. A second later, the door slid open. The leader shoved her through the doorway, then backed up as the door closed.
Mars caught herself before she hit the ground again, then looked up. The room was filled with monitors and wires that took up almost every spare inch of wall. Tables filled with computers old and new rested on desks just below those monitors. In the middle of the room was a desk with three monitors projected just above it. Sitting at the desk was the person from the video she’d seen. Ex-Act.
They studied her, eyes raking over her. Their gaze felt like fire raking at her skin. Though their eyes were pure white, she could tell exactly where they were looking. They were silent for a long while, then finally they stood up and approached her. She backed up, her teeth bared.
“Calm down,” they said. “I have no intent of harming you.”
“You kidnapped me. That’s harm enough.”
“I did what was necessary. Honestly, I hadn’t considered taking you, but I was already hired to bring your friends back, and, well…” They grinned. “I was tempted.”
“You want me for your private collection, is that it?” She glared at him. “To show me off to your underground friends and never let me see the light of day again?”
“That would be a waste of a person of your caliber.” They tilted their head. “I saw the footage of your tournament. You were a force to be reckoned with, especially after I crashed the party. Even after they disabled your arm, you almost slipped away.”
“So then what? You hack my implants? Turn me against the Empire? Make me into your killing machine?”
“Not exactly…” They tapped their fingers together, then glanced at the space where her arm should have been. They grinned. “I would like to take you apart, for starters.”
Mars was alone in the training room when Venus found her. It had been three years since she’d brought Mars to the future, and she was proud with how she’d turned out. Gone was the student who was aiming to get into law school, whose only exercise was walking to classes, whose only experience with combat was watching violent media. The woman fighting the hologram was a completely new person. Her body was perfectly in shape, which she showed off by wearing only a sports bra and skintight workout capris. She was breathing hard and covered in sweat, but that only made her more attractive, at least in Venus’ eyes.
Venus also admired just how calloused and firm that Mars had become. The Mars she’d first pulled here would have been terrified at the thought of making a decision that the Mars now would make without thinking twice. Everything had changed when she decided to take care of the one loose end remaining between Venus and her perfect Mars: Neptune. She did her best to keep Mars away from him, in case he decided to reveal the truth, but when he went crazy and attempted to break the news, she realized he was more of a liability than a useful council member. Since then, Mars was the perfect champion.
Venus didn’t interrupt Mars’ training. She just watched with earnest as she threw punches and dodged ones thrown by the hologram. Venus recognized the hologram as one of the default pirates available in the system. The fight had just started when Venus walked in, and lasted less than a minute before she struck the final blow and the hologram vanished.
She walked to the side of the room and grabbed a towel and her water bottle. She turned back to lean against the wall, then noticed Venus standing by the door. She set her water bottle on the ground and approached her.
“Venus. Is there something going on?” she asked.
She gave her an amused smile. “Nothing important. Other than you, of course. Just wanted to see what you were up to.” She reached up and grabbed both ends of the towel around Mars’ neck. She used that to pull her closer, so that they were centimeters apart. “Training going well?”
Mars’ cheeks, already red from working out, darkened a shade. “As well as it normally goes.”
“Out of endurance? Or still got a bit of energy left for… other things?” She leaned down a bit so that their lips were only a centimeter apart.
Venus noticed Mars gulp. She licked her lips and watched how Mars mirrored the action. “What other things did you have in mind?” she asked.
“I think you know the type.” Venus brushed her lips against Mars’ and then pulled back, relishing in the way that Mars tried to follow her, her eyes already half-lidded.
“Anything,” she whispered, her voice low in her throat. “Anything for you.”
“You know what I want,” Venus replied. “I want you.”
Jokes on you- I had the handcuff key hidden in my mouth this entire time. 🗝
She didn’t want to believe that her dad was right about Pi. She should have trusted him, she should have known better. Alexis was always so careful, and her father had taught her how to defend herself. But she was so in love, so overtaken by his charm that she didn’t even see if coming. The date that they were supposed to be taking, that the drive was a lot longer than it should have been. The water making her dizzy and tired, in a way that water should not do. And by the time she had put the pieces together, it was too late. Reaching for her phone, he had noticed it from the driver’s seat. It wasn’t hard to take her phone out of her hand, and throw it out the window.
It was hard for her to keep track after that. Where they were, what was happening. All she knew was that with each second she was growing more and more tired, and that was dangerous on its own. And waking up was even scarier for her. Hands cuffed behind her, and the door in front of her was closed. Her brain was still foggy, unsure of where she was or what was going to happen next.
I had a dream of getting kidnapped 😰
When Tony kidnapped Peter one afternoon it was a spur of the minute decision. One that he hadn't fully thought through yet luckily had the resources to see through. But oh how it gave him an opportunity he didn't have before. Finally he could spend time with his love, who until now he had only been able to admire from afar. Because before Peter didn't now he existed much less loved him with his whole heart, but now he did. Finally he would get the chance to let Peter know him and, with time, help him fall in love with Tony.
