A curious fact about Nikolai's nickname "korol rezni". In the books it is translated as "the king of scars", and Ravkan is quite different from Russian, I know, but from Russian "korol rezni" (король резни) actually translates as "the king of massacre"
I’m going to scream about this but:
SHADOW AND BONE CASTING SHADOW AND BONE CASTING SHADOW AND
y’all. this is ridiculous. there’s no need to be rude about the nikolai casting. we haven’t even seen him in character yet and y’all are already being disgusting. patrick gibson is a human being and i think some of you have forgotten that.
i think he’s going to be great and i can’t wait to see him as our too-clever fox. much love to him and the rest of the cast that has to deal with this ridiculousness <3
why do men say that women are complicated. all we want is a man who is a king, a soldier, a privateer, an engineer and a demon all at the same time. it's really not that hard.
just found out Nikolai Lantsov doesn't have any tattoos don't speak to me
the zoya nazyalensky gold rush
Gleaming Twinkling Eyes like sinking ships On waters so inviting I almost jump in
Zoya was in front of her throne, her blue eyes gleaming. Everyone's gaze is drawn to her. Her dragon's crown was huge and high. Saints, she looked stunning. Nikolai was a sinking ship and she was the sea in her blue gown.
But I don't like a gold rush, gold rush I don't like anticipating my face in a red flush I don't like that anyone would die to feel your touch
He only wanted to run up to the throne and kiss her lovely lips. The notion caused his cheeks to flush. He desired to hold her, to have her all to himself. They'd spent the entire day in front of people, conversing with them and toasting with them. Isn't it true that he deserved some alone time with his queen? Away from prying eyes of strangers? These individuals who were dying to catch his queen's attention. And just as he was about to go up to her, she said "That's all I have to say tonight, enjoy the feast."
Everybody wants you Everybody wonders what it would be like to love you Walk past, quick brush I don't like slow motion double vision in rose blush
She was swarmed by ministers and other political figures as soon as she stepped down from the stage near her throne. Nikolai said beneath his breath, "For fucks sake." He approached the group that was encircling Zoya. She must be sick of them as well.
"Zoya! You're there—I've been looking for you all over the place ", Nikolai remarked, his eyes widened with surprise. Zoya gave him a grateful look. "It's time for you to sign that document we were discussing earlier."
"Of course. You all will have to excuse me", she said, her tone authoritative rather than apologetic.
They made their way to the grand hall's balcony.
"Thank you," zoya whispered, adjusting the dragon scales with her fingers. "I'm so tired of today."
"I could tell you w-," he began, but she interrupted him with a kiss.
What must it be like To grow up that beautiful? With your hair falling into place like dominos
"What was that for?", Nikolai laughed.
She turned to face the sky and answered, "Nothing, I just missed you today." Her lovely hair framing her perfect face, the moonlight shining on her. Her crown glinting. Zoya Nazyalensky. His Queen. The most precious person to ever exist.
"You are so damned beautiful, it's almost a crime.", he said, his cheeks hot.
She chuckled softly, a sound that was both rare and precious.
I see me padding 'cross your wooden floors With my Eagles t-shirt hanging from the door At dinner parties I call you out on your contrarian shit And the coastal town We wandered 'round had never Seen a love as pure as it
"I love you Nikolai", she said, and in that moment he knew. He knew everything. And so he knelt down on one knee.
"I love you so much, Zoya," he whispered, drawing her closer to him.
"What are you doing?" she asked, her voice trembling and her eyes nearly tearful.
"I can't imagine my life without you, and I adore waking up next to you every day, and I wish I could have that for the rest of my life," he said. He hadn't planned it, and he didn't even have a ring, but he knew it was the right moment. This was the turning point. Nikolai's plans, no matter how meticulous, never came to fruition. "Zoya, I adore you and I love you. Will you be my wife?"
"Yes-," she answered, her face flushed and her hair fluttering in the breeze.
He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Yes?" he exclaimed.
"Yes, yes, Nikolai. Of course, I'll marry you, I absolutely love you."
He stood up and kissed her on the lips. He smothered her in kisses like there was no tomorrow. "Thank you," he said, realizing that he was about to become her demon fool, her husband. He was the luckiest man on the face of the planet.
Rule of Wolves (King of Scars#2 by Leigh Bardugo) is one of the most dynamic read, you cannot get bored at any point. The story have so much space and clarity.Story have a vast spectrum, from a heart sick boy and lonely girl to a dragon willed General and a gallant King, vessel of shadow, Korol Rezni.Violence to romance to kindness to grieve urgh! it have eveything you need. All the saints! and their ugly mothers, this is so fuking good.
The most relatable part in Rule of Wolves is when Nikolai said he wrote bad poetry, sometime in rhymes, about death when he was a teenager. Like, everyone wrote at least a bad poem about death as a teenager, even the king of Ravka.

Rule of Wolves spoiler
He was finally back at the Grand Palace. It had been months since Nikolai last saw this place and everyone, especially Zoya. He missed her dearly. His ruthless, stubborn, powerful, beautiful Zoya. His Queen. It had been Nikolai’s first time in a long time since he travelled the seas. He, as Sturmhond, was helping a certain Captain Ghafa hunt down slavers. And now, he was finally back home.
‘’Genya, there you are.’’ he said, ‘’It’s been a while.’’
‘’It has’’ Genya replied enthusiastically.
‘’Can you tailor be back as myself?’’
‘’Where’s Zoya?’’ Nikolai asked as Genya tailored him.
‘’She’s been in her chambers for quite a long time now.’’
‘’Oh yeah? How long?’’ His brows creased.
‘’A couple of days, weeks. She barely ate too.’’ Genya said as her voice quivers.
‘’Not sure but- Can you hold still?!’’
‘’She hasn’t finished her work in weeks. Not sure when her highness is suppose finish it but she has to soon... Okay andd you’re all set to go.’’ said Genya.
Nikolai thanked her and quickly strode off Zoya’s chambers. He was utterly confused. It was unlikely for Zoya to stay in her chambers for so long, not finishing work.
And surely, there she was, lying on the bed as still as stone, face buried under pillows. The room was a chaotic mess itself. Papers were scattered all around, crumpled. It was not Zoya-like at all. Some of the decorations on the floor were broken. She’s been using her Squaller powers. She would often tell him how disorganised he was. ‘’Nikolai you better not get your dirty-ass feet on my carpet!’’ she’d say sternly. As he stepped further into the room , he could see her body trembling. He flopped on the bed next to her and laid a resting arm on her back. ‘’Zoya darling, are you alright?’’ he asked in a whispering voice, rubbing her back gently. She turned her head towards Nikolai and opened her eyes groggily, her tired eyes scanning his face. She rose to sit and buried her head in her arms, letting out a groan. She looked exhausted and her hair was tangled. She’s wearing the blue ribbon.. ‘’Zoya?’’ Nikolai said worryingly. It took a while for her to form words and the her silence haunted him. What happened when I was away? Is she alright?
‘’I..I can’t’’ She said quietly, her voice trembling.
‘’You can’t what?’’ Nikolai asked, trying to comfort her.
‘’I can’t lead! I can’t..be a Queen for Ravka’’ she sobbed. Nikolai gave her a confused look.
‘’Who told you that?’’ he asked, baffled.
‘’I..lashed out on a crowd during a speech to the other grisha by accident and they all..looked at me like I’m some kind of..monster. I accidentally hurt a small grisha,’’ she whimpered, ‘’And the paperwork kept on piling and I kept getting flashbacks and I can’t focus at all! It’s too much!”
‘’Is that what happened?’’
Zoya laid her head against Nikolai’s chest, still trembling.
‘’There’s so much to do’’
For all he knew, despite her ruthlessness, Zoya would never hurt anyone without reasoning. Let alone a child.
‘’I try,’’ she began, ‘’I try to brush it off everyday, telling myself I can that it was an accident..but the memory of it all was still there and the horrified faces of others.’’ She let out a shaky breath. The last time he seen Zoya vulnerable was when he found out about her garden and still, he didn’t know what to do.
“We all have our ups and downs.” He said softly, “You can’t let your past actions get the best of you. I know, you would never hurt someone without reasoning. You apologized right?”
Even if she was silent, he knew what she meant. Of course she did. She still has a heart somewhere. “Everyone has flaws,” he said, debating whether he should say the next two words. “Even...me.”
Her eyebrows shot up, not being surprised with that statement but surprised that he was willing to admit it. “Really? I thought you were perfect” she teased. Good, she’s calmer now. “All in the act, my dear, all in the act. And I get it, it’s not easy being Queen. Most definitely easier to be general. You have more responsibilities now and yeah it gets stressful.”
Zoya sighed. Nikolai could tell how guilty she felt
“We’ll deal with the crowd later.” He ensured.
There was a long pause then and silence filled the room except for the sound of their breaths.
“You know, when Genya told me about you being in your chambers for so long, not finishing your work, I simply thought it was because you missed me.” He smirked. “You’re an awful person.” She replied, her lips curling up into a smile. “You know you miss me.” He winked.
“Do I know that?” She teased. She could see how hurt he felt by that. She turned her head towards him and gave a soft kiss on his lips “Yes. Of course I did.” She whispered. He grinned with satisfaction.
“Now you, Moya Tsaritsa, go eat. Genya said you barely eat and while you do that I’ll help you finish your work.”
“How did I get so lucky with you?” She sighed, already getting up and walking towards the door.
A wide smile spread across his face. “Saints, say that again.”
“Nah. I do as I please.” She said as she opened the door. “Oh and Nikolai,” she turned around to face him, “make sure you shower before helping me. You smell awful.”
Now that’s the Zoya I know.

why do you never kiss me sweetly in the morning, zoya? / I do nothing sweetly, your highness.
Rule of wolves spoiler
Nikolai proposes to Zoya a year or two after the events happening in Rule of Wolves (which btw irritates zoya to death becoz in her mind it’s all “when tf is he going to propose” ).
He tells her he’s bringing her to a place with his ship. He told her it was related to work.
But it would be just the two of the them. No Tolya and Tamar, Genya, etc etc. (he knows Zoya likes to make memories alone together without others watching, regardless if they’re close to her)
They watched the view of the ocean together, silently. Yeah they chit chat here and there, political stuff, personal stuff. Sure.
And when it was sunset, and the view was just right, on the deck, he got on one knee. He took out a red velvet box and inside lies a huge diamond ring.
“Zoya, moya tsaritsa, will you be my friend, my queen, my bride, my forever?” He asked with a smile.
Heck yea it was really rough he clearly didn’t practice and yes it was totally awkward for the both of them. Nikolai thought “pfft I’m already charming AND HANDSOME this should be alright and smooth” ...BUT,
“Yes” Zoya smiled
Zoya inner monologue: took him long enough.
Zoya knew it was just one of his schemes. That he took her on his ship JUST THE TWO OF THEM. But she pretends she doesn’t know and captures every moment. I mean she probably wasn’t prepared???
“Wait wait, so it’s not about work?”
“No my lovely zoya tis not -“
“SO you BrouGHT ME ouT here for noTHING? WHIle I Have WORK To DO?”
“FOR NOTHING? You got your RING didn’t you??”
“Yea I KNOW BUT LIKE WE COULD’VE GONE SOMEWHERE THAT ISN’T TIME CONSUMING??”
“WELL YOU LIKE YOUR RING RIGHT? IT WAS REALLY EXPENSIVE”
“OF COURSE I DO ITS LOVELY BUT-“
“THEN WHY ARE WE FIGHTING”
“WE ARE NOT”
“THEN WHY ARE WE-“
“SHUT UP NIKOLAI”

y/n looks back on a time when she thought she knew nikolai. even now, she’s not sure she will ever know him.

⎯ a/n: it’s only my second night in my dorm [i am currently all alone as my suitemates don’t show up for a few more days] and i have never enjoyed being so far away from everything i’ve ever known so much until now
The dusk sky fed into the smoke. It appeared suddenly, while Y/N was sitting at her desk, crawling along the floor to seize hold of her ankles and drag her back into the familiar place of grief.
The bright green plants lining the trail were navy and every sound in the forest was enunciated. The fear was better than the pressure, anything was better than the pressure.
Y/N dragged her feet along the dirt, focusing on the feel of the rocks scraping the thin material of her soles, listening to the roughness against the earth. If she focused hard enough, the pressure subsided and the voices dimmed.
Then came the rushing of water. It was loud enough that she didn’t have to think. There was nothing to feel other than freezing cold river, cooling her skin in the summer air.
She hugged herself so tight her wrists ached from the strain and she thought her ribs might shift against the delicate tissue of her spine. She shuffled along, the crease between her brows deep and uncomfortable. It had been nearly a year and a half of the painful expression. It wasn’t something you could ever get used to.
Y/N saw it. But that didn’t mean she could believe it; Nikolai was with another girl, too far to notice his ex lover’s presence. He was too deep in the other girl’s eyes, too deep in his scheme of attention and validation to notice the other standing several feet away, watching the two interact.
“Hold on … okay. Here. You get a long piece, and make sure it’s kind of wide or else your chances of it working are slim.” Y/N situated the piece of tall grass between her thumbs and neared the small dips in her finger that left a gap on each side of the green to her lips. “And then you just …” She pressed her mouth to the opening and blew. A wide grin restrained itself as the screeching sound emitted.
“Where’d you learn that?” said Nikolai.
Y/N shrugged. “A friend. We’d do it all recess.”
She turned her head to find the young king admiring her, the corners of his lips kicked up and his head supported by his elbow.
Her eyes flicked between his before saying, “What?”
His head shook softly, “Nothing.”
“Don’t play that game.”
Nikolai brushed a hair away from her face. “What game?”
“You know what game.”
A cheeky grin grew on his features. He put a gentle hand to her cheek and leaned into her lips.
Y/N could appear in front of the two. She would ignore the man’s stare, his presence. All she wanted was to warn his next victim. “It’s a game he likes to play,” she’d say. “Run while you still have him to blame.”
But she wouldn’t.
The room was so full you couldn’t see the tiled flooring. It was a sea of smiling and dancing bodies, yet one caught her attention.
Y/N locked gazes with the king of Ravka, all the way on the other side of the room, sat at the long dining table. She thought it may be a trick of the eye; she’d looked his way many times before. But then the corner of his mouth twitched and his head bobbed faintly.
Y/N couldn’t restrain the smile that itched at her lips under his eyes.
She was all his.
Y/N spun quickly on her toes and speed-walked back the way she came. If possible, the grip on her middle tightened excruciatingly. Her face screwed up as an uncomfortable emotion swept over her, forcing down her cheeks and onto her clothes. She wiped furiously at her eyes, pushing herself as quick as possible toward her small room in the staff’s quarters.
When she got inside, she continued to her bathroom and, finally, sat down hard in the chair in the corner. Her eyes locked on the mirror which reflected the dim light coming in from the thinly curtained floor-to-ceiling window pane.
Y/N watched Nikolai’s nimble fingers make work of his medal adorned coat. He eyed the buttons and pins in the glass, chin lifted slightly.
She stood and ambled over, snaking her arms around his middle. Her lips pressed against his shoulder blade, then rested there. Only her eyes were visible to him in the mirror, peeking over his shoulder.
Nikolai finished his task before running his long fingers up the tops of her forearms before wrapping around and squeezing her wrists. He took hold of her hands, entwining them tightly. His head leaned back, allowing his cheek to rest against the side of her head. She leaned into his touch.
“How long will it be?” she mumbled into his clothing.
“It depends,” he sighed.
“It’s supposed to end at one. But it’ll end at twelve.”
She scoffed. “You can’t make that happen.”
“I’m the king. I can make whatever I want happen.”
A smile lit up his face at the sight of her own stifled in his shoulder.
His arms tightened around himself to grab more of her. “Especially when it is for someone that I love.”
Y/N hunched over, feeling the press of her forearms and thumbs into her stomach and ribs. She sucked in a deep breath through her nose, but it still came out uneven.
The pain was nothing she’d ever felt. It possessed you, took every good part of you and set it aside until it decided when it was time to go. However, she wasn’t quite sure the pain would ever go. It was too raw, too debilitating.
In her wildest dreams, she could regret it. She would hate him and scream at the top of her lungs how terrible of a person he was.
Y/N rose to stand before the window. On their way back, she watched Nikolai and the woman walk toward the castle arm-in-arm. He pecked her temple, then looked up.
That was an example of the rawness. She felt her feet sink into the floor, her fingertips dig into her palms. Y/N was over him more than she could express, it was just the pain that reminded her of the unfortunately good times they once had, who he once was.
With that blank, emotionless gaze he gave her now, she didn’t know him. That Nikolai was not the one she saw in the ballroom for the first time. To her, he was now a monster.
FUCK NIKOLAI LANTSOV.
No i mean literally. In a positive sense. I really wanna fuck that man.
