I usually don’t speak about reality shows and stuff online, but tbh KUWTK is so toxic. I started watching it only around 3 or 4 years back so I watched season 15/16 onwards I stopped watching completely in the middle and only see snippets online now. Ever since I have watched it all I have seen is people complaining about Kourtney and being rude to her. Kourtney seems to be going through a lot, she seems like she is bordering depression, and all her sisters do is make it worse for her. The truth is, it seems like her and kim and khloe (who i really just dont like, her entire vibe is fake) are always ganging up against her. They never seem supportive of her and I think it’s simply rude. They do anything for views. I feel horrible for Kourtney and I really wish someone close to her can realize that her mental health is clearly declining. Please just be kind. It’s not that hard.
Throughout quarantine I have been watching a lot of movies. With all of the devastating and tragic things happening in the world, I’ve been forcibly dragging my parents away from the news and showing them movies for their sanity and my own.
One of my favorite movies in the entire world is Legally Blonde. I adore Elle Woods and just love the message of the entire film. I was thrilled to show my father as he’s never seen the movie, and I wanted him to love it as much as I do.
Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed as the opening scene played, leading the audience through the sorority house up to Elle’s room. My father immediately started criticizing the shallowness of the film and how he was disappointed this was the kind of movie I spent time watching. I felt defensive and upset but mostly I felt ashamed. I knew his words were wrong; I’d watched this movie at least six times and everytime I felt more empowered each time, but now he was ruining my love for lawyer-extraordinaire Elle Woods. After five more minutes of disappointed looks and annoying comments, I’d finally had enough and fast forwarded to the end of the movie to the famous court scene where Elle proves her intelligence and wins the case all by being true to herself. At that point my father rescinded his early criticisms and agreed that the movie was pretty good.
I was satisfied that he no longer thought that the movie was some shallow and mindless film, but I was still upset at how he’d reacted at the beginning. He’d automatically assumed just by the images of frilly pink outfits and Elle’s golden blonde locks, it was going to be a stupid movie all about a stupid girl. It reminded me about how my father reacts to the Kardashians.
I am an avid watcher of Keeping up with the Kardashians. Most nearly anything in my life is academically based when it comes to my hobbies, extracurriculars, and even my own media consumptions, but sometimes I just need to turn my brain off, and when I need to do that, I turn to my favorite reality tv show family: the Kardashian-Jenner clan. I first started watching them with my sister because there was nothing on. I’m not a big fan of reality tv, (except cooking shows﹣Gordon Ramsey is my hero) so it never crossed my mind to consider watching Keeping up with the Kardashians, but when I started, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. It wasn’t just over-the-top drama and addictive cat fights as everyone, my father included, assumes. I was surprised to see six talented, intelligent, and strong women who have consistently overcome adversity and struggle. They’re smart and skillful business women who, in the ever-changing world of entertainment, have managed to become titans in media who have immense influence on the world. Though they are sometimes overdramatic or too short-sighted, I really think they all can be applauded. I highly respect Kris, Kourtney, and Khloe for, on multiple occasions, dealing and surviving toxic relationships and finding the ability to place their children above all else. When it comes to Kim and Kendall, I really appreciate them for being real about their mental health and how it’s a serious problem in the world. Kim and Kylie are incredible business women and really know how to not only stay relevant but be powerhouses of businesses.
They’re all more than what many people seem to believe at face value and my father is no different. He constantly criticizes me about watching them and constantly criticizing them as people.
All of this really got me thinking about how some people view “unorthodox feminists.” Feminism is all about gender equality. It’s about how every woman has the potential and should be given the same rights to achieve success at the same opportunities as everyone else in the world. As a feminist myself, I’ve definitely seen many people misinterpret feminism and the definition of what makes a “strong woman.” Strange as it seems, some people genuinely have this image in their head of a strong and smart woman being someone who is modest yet intelligent. Perhaps someone who wears a lot of pantsuits and keeps their appearance pretty plain and straightforward. Someone who would never show too much skin or spend time messing with shallow things like makeup or beauty products; they’re too busy achieving success in the world.
That image always seems ridiculous to me. There’s no dress code for a strong woman. A strong woman is simply that. Someone who is strong and someone who is a woman. Just because some women like wearing makeup or like wearing clothes that may show more skin doesn’t discount their intelligence and strength. Judging the content of one’s character based on their appearance is one of the worst things someone can ever do. Ever heard of the saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover.’
I think most of this whole culture of a strong woman being this narrow category with a set checklist is very sexist at heart. Some people are just uncomfortable with the thought that a woman can be multifaceted. You can like wearing makeup and showing skin and still be powerful business women. You can like doing your hair and wearing pink and still be a fantastic lawyer. You can like watching Legally Blonde and Keeping up with the Kardashians and still be a strong and intelligent woman.
