Warnings: Panic Attacks, Anxiety
Plot: Virgil's day could not get worse if it tried, he's more than ready to lock himself up forever if possible, but his friends just aren't having that. (Human!AU)
Virgil is soaked to the bone, shivering in his hoodie as his feet drag along the pavement. The rain had been coming down hard but the real culprit of the cold is the car that decided to drive full speed through a puddle that soaked the tired and already freezing man head-to-toe.
As if anything could make his day worse, Virgil is on the edge of sobbing. Absolutely everything that could have gone wrong managed to turn over on its head for him. He'd been late for class, meaning he'd had to walk in alone about twenty minutes into the lecture. Then there'd been a general argument with someone he didn't even know, leaving him feeling sick and exhausted. Then his friends had seemed wonderfully absent for the day, and lastly, his teacher had decided that today he was going to be no help for his academic struggles. His workload seems higher than ever, and he hasn't slept in days.
The more Virgil opens his eyes, the more he considers simply picking a plot of land and digging six feet until nature takes its course. He feels so lonely yet so very claustrophobic, all of his problems picking themselves up and pushing to his lungs until he steadily forgets how to breathe. He feels sick. Drained. He's scared his legs might give out before he's even pushed the door open.
He can smell food when he walks in and it makes his stomach lurch, head spinning as he braces his forearm to the wall. "Virgil?" His dazed gaze finds a pair of cool blue eyes, and for a moment he doesn't recognise the owner, too busy shrivelling up inside his own mind.
"Sit him down, Lo." Right, Logan, his friend. He knows Logan. Warm hands touch his own and he flinches, startling as he tries not to curl back against the wall.
"Virgil, it's okay, it's just me."
"Lo...Logan," his words slur, gripping hold of the hands in his own maybe a little too tight. But the grip doesn't stir away, nor does Logan so much as inhale sharply at the tightness, simply guides the other to sit on the couch.
A blanket wraps around his shoulders and he peers up through blurred eyes at the worried face of Roman, whose lips are pulled to a worried frown. "It's okay Virgil, just breathe, focus." Virgil looks back to Logan, and his bright, calm eyes. "Can you hear me?"
"Good, can you breathe for me, Virgil? Like we practised?" Right, breathing, that's why he's so dizzy. 1...2...3... "Just like that, thank you, Virgil." Virgil lifts a shaky, freezing hand to grip the blanket in his hand, the material soft and warm and weighted. The sound of a cup landing gently on the coffee table startles him, but he zones in on the sound to see Patton kneeling in front of him, eyes worried.
He's not alone. He breathes a sigh of relief, his inhales and exhales evening slowly. Roman sits beside him. "Bad day?" He asks, his dark eyes gentle and his lips pulled into a sympathetic smile.
"The worst," Virgil exhales tiredly, leaning his head on Logan's shoulder. "The longest day, ever." He closes his eyes. Logan's arm wraps gently around his shoulder. He reaches out a hand and Roman takes it, squeezing it gently.
"Do you want to talk about it, kiddo?" Patton asks softly. Virgil shakes his head.
"Later," he mutters. "Tired."
"Let's get you out of these clothes first, yeah?" Roman's hand squeezes him as he speaks. "I'm not taking you to A and E when you come down with pneumonia, Logan might though."
"It's preferable you don't come down with pneumonia." Virgil smiles at the dry humour in Logan's tone, exhaling a laugh through his nose. "Do you require any help?" Virgil hesitates a moment before he nods.
"Just getting up the stairs, I'm...shaky." Logan nods, wrapping an arm around his waist. Patton picks up the cup of tea as Roman helps Virgil to his feet.
Virgil changes alone, though he's still cold. He sits on the edge of his bed as the others enter. Patton hands him his cooling tea and lets him lean against him as he drinks. Logan, always keen to keep his hands busy, dries off Virgil's too-long hair and brushes it out, the movements soothing for the other man, whose eyes flutter closed. Roman just holds his friend's hand, talking to him about all the weird things that happened today. "Logan fell down the stairs." Virgil snorts quietly.
"He missed a whole step and landed flat on his ass," Roman corrects him, happy to hear the quiet laughter. Logan rolls his eyes, tying Virgil's hair out of his eyes. "It was hilarious, for everyone but Logan that is."
"Patton nearly had a heart attack, it was only funny to you." Virgil smiles at his friends, leaning his head up off of Patton's shoulder to quietly thank Logan, lifting his hand up to touch his hair.
"Today was bad for at least two of us then," he whispers quietly, the smile slipping a moment. "It's just been such a bad day, I haven't been sleeping so my mood was already shit, and then I was late for class and everyone was staring at me and then some guy was being a dick to me, and my teacher isn't explaining the work properly so I just don't fucking understand and all my work is piling up and...and..." He exhales through his nose, burying his face in his hands. "...I feel like my whole life is falling apart."
Patton gives him a sympathetic smile, holding out his arms for a hug, Virgil buries his face against his shoulder, Roman rubs his back soothingly, shaking his head with a sigh. "Your life isn't falling apart Virgil, it's just...stressful, everyone has moments like that," Patton mutters quietly.
"...and no matter what hurdles you need to cross, there are no rules to say you have to cross them alone," Logan adds quietly.
"...And I will kick that dude's ass for you," Roman grins, Virgil snorts.
"I was going to suggest helping him with his work but, yes, as Roman aptly put, we can do that too," Logan's smile, although rare, is a little mischievous, a look in his eyes that says he knows full well he wouldn't succeed but would try anything to make Virgil happy.
"You'd get your ass kicked Lo," Virgil sniffles, wiping his eyes.
"It's the thought that counts!" Patton giggles, pressing a gentle kiss to Virgil's cheek, bringing a shy smile to his lips. "We can try anything to help, starting with getting you an umbrella, you're supposed to have your showers indoors!" Virgil laughs properly then, the teasing tone comforting and familiar. He feels like he breathes for the first time that day as his friends laugh too. "Anything else you want to talk about, kiddo?"
Virgil shakes his head "...no, I just want to relax."
"Netflix and Patton's homecooked dinner!" Roman cheers.
"One of these days you heathens will learn to cook," is the dry response their adopted resident cook gives. "Hell might freeze over first but it's worth a plea."
"We can cook..." Logan adds, sliding up off the bed, holding out his hands to help Roman up with a slight struggle, "...you cook better, however." Virgil catches the roll of Patton's eyes, satiated by a quick kiss on the forehead and the ruffle of his hair from Logan and Roman respectively. He's not alone.
"Logan, do you think tomorrow morning you could help me with my coursework? I just don't understand the language, so...I was wondering if you'd help me rephrase it?" He tugs at the sleeves of his sweater nervously.
"I'd quite like that, actually." Virgil nods, giving a timid smile and accepting the hand held out to him with calm relief. One step at a time. Not everything has to be tackled at once, and not everything has to be dealt with alone.
