JATP Is New Territory for Disney+
I am sure you are looking at the title of this post and really confused. It is simple really. Disney+ only came out in 2019. All the shows and movies that are featured on it are either from the already existing Disney catalog or originally made on the platform.
Yes Disney CHANNEL has acquired the rights to air shows from other countries on their network, but Disney+ has never been in such a situation where they are picking up a show that was cancelled by another network. In this regard, Hulu has a better standing as it has picked up shows that were cancelled by other networks such as The Mindy Project to name one.
The reason that Julie and the Phantoms is better on Disney+ is because there are no time constraints. On Disney Channel, shows have to stick to a 30 minute time frame with commercial breaks that would cut the episode down like 5-8 minutes. Besides this, Disney+ has original programming that is a bit more serious and less childish (whereas a lot of Disney Channel shows in the past ten years or so have treated watchers like they are 5). The only show on Disney Channel currently that is more mature and darker is The Secrets of Sulphur Springs.
Now going back to my first point. Disney+ is really doing something big by considering picking up Julie and the Phantoms. Netflix is notorious for having a chokehold on their programming and making it difficult for cancelled shows to get picked up by other networks. But Disney IS Disney. If they want something, they will get it.
The hold up on matters is for a few reasons. The timing of when the show was cancelled, Netflix being a b*tch, and the fact that stuff like this takes time. It has not even been six weeks since the cancellation. As I mentioned the timing was bad for us. It was right in the middle of the holidays so a lot of people were going to be out of the office and not back for a while. So the first three weeks was us just getting attention to these other platforms without any higher ups having looked into things yet. Now it is crunch time.
From my hours of research, I have noticed that it takes up to two to two and a half months at the quickest for a show to get picked up by another network. One Day at a Time is a Netflix show that was picked up by another network after it was cancelled and it was exactly 15 weeks after the cancellation announcement (that is just under 4 months).
Operating under the assumption that JATP will be picked up, at the earliest would be the week ending in the 12 of February and the latest the week ending in the 2 of April (based on similar scenarios). So for now, we keep on pushing and making our voices heard and bringing attention to the show.
Okay, we’ve gotten a Mean Girls musical, a Legally Blonde musical, and a Heathers musical—and they’re all fucking cherry.
