Free speech is all speech. You can’t redefine free speech to mask or justify your authoritarianism. When you defend free speech, you are defending your enemy’s ability to put you down, to attack your stance. You give people who are anti-free speech a platform, and that is the right thing to do. No matter how disgusting, how disheartening any word or piece of art may be, you should defend its existence, and if you disagree with it point out its flaws, attack it, but censoring it just tells the world you’re not willing to defend your own stance. Censorship is used by cowards and tyrants. Any act which does not threaten the safety of another individual should be permitted and defended, and even then, they are allowed to speak, they just should be aware of the consequence of threats against other people’s safety.
Put your ego aside. Whatever stance or convictions you hold, you’re right to yourself, correct? Then why are you afraid of dissent? Push your message, expand your influence of thought. You don’t need to destroy another person’s voice to speak your own. Defend free speech because once we lose free speech we lose speech.
