    Entertainment Without Netflix

So, you want a nice collection of things to watch, but you don’t want to pay for streaming services. Completely understandable! So you turn to the internet. The advice you get, by and large, is “pirate it!”

Now, maybe that works for you. But if your moral compass heard that and gave a hard no, you aren’t alone. There are plenty of people who feel that way. Are we stuck either paying for streaming or not having entertainment? Absolutely not.

Here’s a handy guide to getting a really good collection of TV shows and movies to enjoy without paying for streaming or pirating anything:

    1. Free Streaming

Tubi TV - Absolutely free to make an account, also available in app form.

Pluto TV - Again, free to make an account, but you can also use it without an account. Not only does it have a streaming collection, it has live TV, if you’re interested.

    2. YouTube

I’m not talking about movies that people have uploaded in pieces; if pirating bothers you, that probably will as well. But there are plenty of free movies on YouTube, and some companies upload full episodes for free.

    3. Libraries

Seriously, I cannot emphasize supporting local libraries enough. I have such love for them, and if they don’t have the show or movie you want to watch, there’s a good chance that you’ll be able to get it through interlibrary loan. If you don’t know how, just call your library, or talk to the person at the front desk.

If even ILL doesn’t have it, see if your library will order it.

    4. Resale shops

Now we’re stepping out of free territory, so I’d encourage leaning on the first three options to start. But if you want to work on this for long-term, see what movies you can find at resale shops. Often they’ll have shelves full of DVDs for just a few dollars each. If you pick up a few along, pretty soon you’ll have a decent collection of your own.

    5. Garage sales

Much like the last option, but garage sales are a great place to get really cheap movies.

    6. Ebay

This can be more of a mixed bag with prices, and pay attention to user ratings, but you can get collections of movies for a low price on here.

7: Bonus, if you can get others involved: Sharing

If you have a handful of friends who also want entertainment without streaming or piracy, see if they’d be interested in joining forces. If you compare notes to see who has what, you can take turns borrowing from each other, and build collections with each other in mind. (Ie, if your friend already owns the movie, weigh your options before buying.)

If anyone else has non-pirating suggestions, feel free to add on.

On today's episode of internet hacks that might help you:

    Wayback machine.

This has single handedly helped me watch/read/use so many things (including but not limited to YouTube videos, fics, a music website and novel translations) that were deleted/changed for a multitude of reasons.

Anyway, all I am saying is that the wayback machine exists and is awesome.

    Ten Ways To Unwind

    Ten Ways To Unwind

As Blogtober reaches the end, I wanted to write about making time for yourself to unwind. The past few weeks have been hectic and full of challenges for most of us and we need to remember to set aside time to chill out a bit. So this article is brief and to the point. Here goes with some easy ideas: 1) Listen to a podcast. Try a new one or catch up on one of your favourites. 2) Have a foot…

    Adulting Tips re. Cars!

I’ve probably done this before but I saw Some Shit recently and feel the need to post it again. Feel free to reblog and teach people a couple things to make car part ordering easier.

Anyways! You CAN do some of your own car repairs! People post videos online to show you how to do things, and retailers sell parts online. I know, I work for a company that does this, and lots of people save tons of money fixing things themselves. It’s intimidating if you’re new, but I have some tips to maximize your car part buying experience.

VERY IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ORDERING CAR PARTS!!!!

Read all the details in the listing! Cars have lots of little things about them that can make parts not fit or not work. Honda Civics in particular are extremely fussy- those two letters after the word “Civic” can make all sorts of parts not fit correctly.

If you need to provide your VIN, first, do it, it helps guarantee the part will fit and work. And second, get it off the car itself (on the dashboard or driver’s door), not your insurance paperwork. People typing insurance paperwork can typo the VIN, so it’s best to eliminate a possible source of errors.

VINs are not private! They are not Social Security Numbers for cars! They are printed right on your windshield where any asshole can see them. You do not have to protect your VIN from your parts salespeople!

In fact, your can check your own VIN to check your vehicle equipment! VINs are like codes of your factory-installed equipment, so you can “decode” them and view your specifications.  Vindecoder.net and Decodethis.com are just two of the many sites that will let you do that. Not every VIN decoder will work on every VIN, though; it depends on the manufacturer and the info they allow out.

When ordering parts, left/right is usually calculated based on Where The Driver Is Sitting, not Looking At The Car. When in doubt, use Driver/Passenger to refer to locations on the car.

Parts that are designed for US cars (driver on the left, or lefthand drive) won’t fit a European car (driver on the right/right hand drive) because the orientation of the driver and therefore many parts is flipped. Even things like headlights and mirrors are affected. So be careful when ordering from a different country!

Mirrors are a pain in the ass. Your mirror options (power controls, heat, turn signals/blinkers, etc.) all affect the wiring. If they don’t match up, your plug might be wrong and the part won’t work. If you want to change your options, look for the word “upgrade” otherwise the part won’t change your options; it will just fart out on you.

Pay attention to headlight bulbs types! Halogen are the default, yellow-ish lights. The common, bright, slightly colored lights are HID (High Intensity Discharge) or Xenon. They have extra equipment they need to work. HID/HALOGEN HEADLIGHTS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. You can convert Halogen lights to HID with a kit, but not vice versa. And the less common, annoyingly bright lights are LED, and they are theoretically interchangeable with the Halogen set up. But they do not give off warmth so you cannot clear ice, snow, or even just foggy lights by turning them on. And they are annoyingly bright so everyone on the road with you is now blind and hates you.

Some car manufacturers are just inherently more difficult to repair at home. This is sometime referred to as “over-engineered” and will needs three times as much bullshit to accomplish what a normal car can do in like, four bolts (Volvo, Subaru and Saab are particular offenders). There’s no shame in not being able to do work yourself. Like, I have a Subaru and I don’t even change my own lightbulbs. Fuck that.

When in doubt, email Customer Service BEFORE BUYING. DO NOT BUY IF YOU STILL HAVE QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!! Car parts are often heavy and terrible to deal with if you fuck up! Save yourself the trouble and if there’s confusion, ask someone first.

my hacks for early morning classes + productivity

every morning I devote 25 mins of my time to tidy up my room. it serves as a meditation and it clears my head on an early morning. it helps so much with the flow of the rest of the day and for me to not to be late for my classes.

i do my skincare to wake myself up AND start feeling good from the very start of the day. it is a ritual for me, because it feels so magical. I love feeling my face so fresh and the glowy look. and the sweet scent of my moisturizer hacks my brain into the present moment, like how some scents take you to your dearest memories.

if i have an online class, i light my vanilla candle and put my big soft wrap on the radiator. when it's warm i wrap it around myself, then i feel all cozy and peaceful. only missing thing would be the sound of crackling fire of a fireplace.

bonus: learn to say no to another episode of netflix. don't sacrifice your sleep.
