  • You have always had the unlimited capacity to see the humanity in a person. To have an affair, that’s human. To strike at someone in an act of passion, anger, that’s human. But to bludgeon someone to death and keep on bludgeoning until they are a dead. That is a monster, Grace. That is a monster.

HBO limited series The Undoing created and written for the small screen by David E. Kelley based on the book “You Should Have Known” by Jean Hanff Korelitz was solid interesting enough viewing but to say I was enthralled…that would be a solid NO! I know that I may be alone in my assessment of this series and I am by no means saying that it was terrible. I did enjoy the courtroom drama which David E. Kelley is a master at creating but honestly I felt absolutely no connection to this series whatsoever. Perhaps it was the abundance of privilege throughout or the fact that Kidman’s sterile portrayal of this ‘betrayed consequential victim’ distanced her character “Grace” from me and she was absolutely un-relatable!

Of course, she was a psychologist and clinical and her wealthy breeding gave her character stoicism, but that was all that I saw. I didn’t see any depth or even a semblance of development within her character that was facing the harsh reality that her husband was not as he seemed. Even her last minute calculations didn’t present as a desperate mother trying to protect her son but as the cold shrewd-ness of a woman bred to deceive at the heels of her father. As the most intriguing character in this series “Haley” well played by Noma Dumezweni said “It’s what wealthy people do, they withhold”. For me, that is what I felt from Grace, detached withholding. I kept wanting to see more emotion, not to say that it is paramount in portraying a betrayed wife and mother but at least the choices made by Grace should have seemed more tortured as opposed to dispassionate. In fact, I dare say that perhaps Kidman and the series directors’ would have benefitted from watching Michelle Dockery in Defending Jacob whose portrayal was infinitesimally superior, albeit the circumstances were different but betrayal is betrayal, especially when delivered by your husband. I think the directors’ hoped that by zeroing on parts Kidman’s physical attributes (her eyes, lips and fingers) that the viewer would be able to detect her torment but in fact it only showcased her beauty and didn’t endear her character but highlighted her privilege. Kidman was good delivering what she was given but for me the character of Grace was unfortunately more of a façade and less complex than the classical music played throughout.

I will say that this series had a stellar cast in addition to Nicole Kidman. Hugh Grant was absolutely perfect as the deplorable yet somehow vaguely likeable Jonathan Fraser (Grace’s Husband), Donald Sutherland as always turned in a masterful performance as Kidman’s father. As previously mentioned Noma’s portrayal as Jonathan’s lawyer Haley was superb and in fact she carried more depth in her limited scenes than Kidman did the entire series. Also commendable was Lily Rabe and Noah Jupe in their portrayals of Kidman’s best friend Sylvia and son Henry. I was disappointed by the performance given by Edgar Ramirez who I think is a phenomenal actor but his portrayal of Detective Mendoza came off as a caricature and a re-purposed mash-up of every other detective on network TV. This ensemble had its heavy hitters and bench warmers and it showed. The cast felt disjointed and for me never really came together.

As with most series based on books there will be some plot holes and this series didn’t escape that. Some images and scenes went un-explained and perhaps that is why I wasn’t surprised when the identity of the murderer was revealed. There were the attempts to insinuate red herrings into the plot but it felt more like a manipulation and less compelling that I hoped and in fact did little to make me doubt who I believed to be the killer in episode 3, and I was right. I felt that so much more could have been done to make this series so much more interesting apart from relying on the statuesque Kidman and fallible Grant.

As a series goes, The Undoing was a solid series and interesting enough to watch all the way to the end but imo if you are looking for truly compelling characters and plot development, you can certainly do better.

“I wanted her to almost look like a Greek goddess,” says Signe Sejlund. “I needed to make ten of those dresses because of what happens to the poor woman in The Undoing, so I could not find a secondhand dress for her, which I would have preferred. This dress could look like a secondhand dress in my opinion. Elena needed to be extremely sexy and at the same time, her dress needed to reflect that she is entering a world that she is definitely not a part of. Her jewelry is really inexpensive, and I think the necklace cost about $10 and the dress is $150, so it is cheap but because she has this gorgeous body, everything looks amazing on her. Her hair is wild, and she almost looks like a savage.”

“That coat has a big huge hood in the back and the fabric has so many green colors in it,” says Signe Sejlund, who designed the coat for the show. “Grace has a lot of walks in New York and the green coat both blends in and sticks out - for instance, when she walks in Central Park. New York plays a big part in this show and New Yorkers are very well-dressed. As a Dane, I see New York with different eyes, and I think that I have been able to give New York another look, by giving Nicole clothes to wear that look a little different from what you would expect from a woman like this living in New York. I also think Susanne has created a little different New York look than we usually see.”

  • GOD OKAY the end of The Undoing was so incredibly suspenseful and well done like even if you see it coming, you will not be prepared for the way everything is revealed.

And I am sad that they cut at least one major scene involving Lily in the show, but man the scenes she is in? The subtly of her acting—I mean she doesn’t even speak in one scene but her eyes say everything.

Everyone is fantastic but especially Nicole, Lily, and Hugh Grant. The emotion, the deception, it’s all insane. I was holding my breath the entire time. And not to mention the actual writing and the way they pull off making an entirely straightforward conclusion still have you gripping the edge of your seat. I love Susanne Bier.

  • Till the end (Misty Day x reader)

    For @enchantingcoffeeruins

All they asked for was “Misty topping”

    ———————————————————————

“No!!” you all but screamed out into the blackness of your and Misty’s shared bedroom. As soon as your brain registered the dream wasn’t real, you realized your wife was gone from her spot in the bed. Immediately you sprung up as fast as your fatigued body would let you. You made your way into the living room, sighing when you saw your wife sitting on the couch having a midnight snack and watching Animal Planet.

“Misty?!” it came out more frantic than you had intended.

“Darlin?” Misty turned around taking your appearance in, you were only in an oversized shirt and a pair of underwear, not leaving much for the imagination. Your heart raced and you silently cursed yourself for being so worked up, but you were too terrified to care. “Why are you awake so late love?” With that Misty stood understanding you weren’t ok.

“Nightmare.” you said doing your best to swallow the tears, but failing, “Hold me?”

“Of course sweet pea I’m right here.” Misty crossed the room taking you into her arms, leading you to the couch. She sat you down running her hands all over you to make sure you’re ok. “Was it about me again?” You nodded your head. Ever since Misty had gotten lost in hell, you had had this same dream. The dream was a replay of everything that happened the day you lost her, Delia’s cries for Misty to come back still haunt you. When she came back you thought the nightmare would leave, but no. Much like that year without her, the dream would never leave you. You clung even tighter to her. Your faces inches apart.

“I can’t lose you like that again, I love you so much.” you said in her ear, your voice barely above a whisper.

“I’m not goin anywhere darlin.” With that Misty flipped you both so you were now laying on your back, Misty hovering above you.

“ Let me show you how much I love you.” She began kissing down your neck leaving light nips and sucks. Slowly you could feel the sadness and dread of losing her being lifted. With every kiss she placed on your aching body, you felt more free from the pain. In an instant your t-shirt and underwear were forgotten on the floor. Misty’s own clothes joining yours in a pile.

Misty took the opportunity to take all of you in, her eyes wandering all over you magnificent body. She all at once brought her lips down to kiss between your breasts, moving down your body with kisses.

She stopped right before your mound, eliciting a whine from you in protest.

Without another word Misty dipped her tongue into your aching pussy. You bucked your hips begging your love for more.

She placed a course hand on your hip to steady you. She then entered a single finger into you, thrusting in and out of your wanting core.

She sucked and licked making you feel her love in every fiber of your being, like never before. You could feel her rough grip on your thigh as she fucked you senseless. She added a second finger, making you arch your back.

“Please! Misty I need to come, pleasseeee!” Misty was not letting up, this was your silent permission to come all over your lover’s face. You held it in as long as you could but when she curled her fingers hitting the perfect spot inside you, your orgasm hit you in waves, overwhelming all of your senses. She held you flush against her body, helping you ride out your orgasm. When you were nothing but a heap of messy hair and sweat she came to your side and cuddled into you.

“I’m never leaving you again (y/n) …….. not ever.” she whispered into your ear giving it gentle kiss.
