Me, thinking about the linzin fic I’m not gonna let myself write until I finish my hannibal WIP: so anyway tenzin carved a water tribe engagement necklace for Lin but she never wore it because it felt too much like a chain, binding her to a way of life she wasn’t prepared to take on. He didn’t carve a necklace for pema. The necklace is a water tribe tradition, a piece of his mother’s culture, a piece of his heart he isn’t allowed to pursue. His marriage to pema was symbolic of his dedication to the air nation. A water tribe necklace simply wouldn’t do.

Today I would like to talk about how Suyin’s life in Zaofu is a physical manifestation of everything Lin denied herself due to her feelings of responsibility for the people of Republic City and Toph’s legacy.

The doting partner, the big family, the ostentatious displays of wealth and privilege—these are all things Lin could have (and would have) had if she were even a tenth as self-interested as her younger sister. And let’s not forget that after harmonic convergence, Su becomes the mother of the first airbending Beifong. This, when we’re left to infer that the issue of children was one of the main things that caused Lin and Tenzin’s relationship to end, just adds insult to injury. 

Lin’s anger in book three probably went so far beyond what happened when they were younger. She was literally made to bear witness to how the universe rewarded Su for her bullshit, just like their mother always did. 

Tenzin’s throwaway remark that Lin and Aang “got along famously” lives rent free in my head (as does the fact that Lin wrecked air temple island when Tenzin dumped her) so I needed to draw them ~ bonding ~ after Tenzin and Lin’s breakup. He’s the dad she never had ok!!!

Tenzin: Looks matter, Lin. You should know that being the prettiest person in here.
