People far more intelligent and eloquent than me have already discussed the issues with Sylvie in the Loki series, but honestly if I was Sophia di Martino I think I’d watch this series and be very upset.
She’s SO COOL and is acting SO WELL and put so much work into this series… yet the writers simultaneously made her indispensable, and forgettable.
FIRST— How could the writers not introduce her character from the first episode?
Your series only has six episodes!!! So for 1/3 of your runtime, I have no idea who she is, and then once she is introduced in the most pointless episode I don’t even realize she’s supposed to be a main character??
SECOND— In the wise words of Klaus Hargreeves, “Being smart doesn’t make you interesting.”
I understand they wrote Sylvie as a child who was stolen by the TVA, her life expunged, and has now been on the run for millennia. But how, as a writer, can you not realize that by making that choice you make it very difficult for yourself to give her a personality that can compete in a scene with the absolute MONOLITH of charisma and acting skill that is Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki, who we have 10 years of knowledge about.
Why would you not write this story such that her timeline was pruned when she was older? So she had a personality, a life, and JUST AS MUCH fury and blood thirst, but has felt connection and loss, so her interactions with Loki can feel more meaningful? Not just, “female presenting Loki who’s smart and ruthless”. (Don’t get me started on how fluidphobic this show is, that’s a whole other post I gotta write.)
Because as is, her conversations with Loki are not compelling. She lost her family? Her life? So has near every single Marvel character in the MCU. That doesn’t make her stand out in this universe (that’s the most horrible thing I’ve ever written, I’m so sorry, but context!!)
And so my anger on behalf of Sophia is, she’s cast as this incredible badass non-sexualized female-presenting character, yet they don’t write her in a way that allows her to have a personality that can compete with the other characters!! I understand she’s narrow minded BECAUSE of her life, and blood thirsty, and ruthless, and had to be smart to survive, but how dare you reduce her potential to that? So that in the end she can just serve as a foil for Loki’s growth?? The shame of it all!!!! Her character thus feels dead at inception.
THIRD— you introduce her AFTER already front-loading us with many compelling characters who have interesting relationships with each other???
Mobius goes without saying. He’s given a personality, mannerisms, quirks, likes/dislikes, CHARACTER, and his relationship/dynamic with Ravonna tells us a lot about both of them as well!! To say nothing of his interactions with Loki. Some of that is Owen Wilson’s talent as an actor who’s been in the business for DECADES, but also… he was given good material. B-15 also is absolutely brought to LIFE by Wunmi Mosaku, and again, her interactions with Mobius and Loki tell us about her as a soldier for the TVA. Sylvie HAS no meaningful relationships we can pick apart.
And to the point about Mobius, the writers are clearly ABLE to write characters that are fun and interesting who haven’t necessarily LIVED, but they just couldn’t spare the creative energy to do the same for Sylvie. What the fuck.
FOURTH AND FINALLY—the Loki writers create this character of Sylvie who never had the chance to grow a life, opinions, experiences, and dont tell us even the bare minimum about her (like, what the HELL her nexus event was?? Or about her interactions with Thor, their father, ANYTHING!!!) and then—
In the final episode, they push out the EPONYMOUS MAIN CHARACTER so her character can become important—she starts the multiversal war.
I hope so much Sophia is given a chance to flesh out Sylvie. And I wish the writers cared about her character as much as the fandom does.
Disclaimer: I’ve never read a single comic book in my life, and my philosophy is “ship and let ship”.
