Kamadeva shooting his love-arrow at Shiva

Kama (Cupid), the God of Love and Sexuality. He is also known as Manmada, Madhana, Kandarpa, Ananga, was one of the mind-born son of Lord Brahma Dev. Some accounts say he was mind-born son of Lord Vishnu. Rathi was his consort.

    ***~***

"Śiva meditating. Śiva sits on a tiger skin meditating beneath a banyan tree in a hilly landscape.

His knees are bound by a yogapatta.

In his upper right hand he carries a damaru, in his upper hand the mriga (Indian antelope), his lower right hand carries the rudrakshamala and the lower left rests on his flexed knee.

The god wears the usual ornaments, particularly elaborate here are his epaulettes. An angavastra is draped on his shoulders and his third eye is clearly open.

His wife Parvati feels neglected and so she commands a diminutive green-complexioned Kama (located to the right of the god), who kneels on his parrot-drawn chariot while aiming his flowery arrow of love at the meditating god.

Angry at being disturbed Śiva opens his third eye in anticipation of destroying the hapless messanger.

Great care has been taken in the depiction of the sugar cane bow with its string of honeybees, as well as in that of the lotus-tipped arrow of the god.

His arrows are decorated with five kinds of fragrant flowers.

The flowers on his arrows are: Aravinda(White Lotus), Ashoka, Cuta(Mango Flower), Navamalika(Jasmine) and Nilotpala(Blue Lotus). Also known as Unmada, Tapana, Shoshana, Stambhana and Sammohana.

Kamadeva has five arrows which are sometimes associated with five effects that desire has on one afflicted by it. Kamadeva's five arrows are said to be fascination, disturbance, burning, dessication and destruction.

Noteworthy is the Vaishnava namam on Kama's forehead and arms.

The foreground is enlivened by rolling hills and tufts of grass."

    Perks of Losing it all!

    Perks of Losing it all!

Do you know what are the perks of being ‘Jobless’ as per the standards of the society, when you have lost it all; that is when you can be ‘anything’ you want to be! Yes… anything at all! For you can start new only when you are at level – Zero! When we incorporate this in Mythology, (as we are now celebrating Navraatri/Durgotsav)Have you ever wondered, why is Shiva, Shunya (Nothingness,Void…) and…

South Asia in ATLA : Combustion Man

    Other posts in this series

Hello people of tumblr dot com! How's it going? Been a while since I made a post overanalyzing South Asian elements in Avatar : The Last Airbender (or The Legend of Aang, depending where you are in the world). Why did I stop? Well, life happened and the posts were also not getting many notes so my motivation dropped. Why am I resuming? Recently, these posts have been reaching the peak of their Tumblr fame, not just double digit notes (say whaat!!!) but also discussions, replies, and REBLOGS!! Yes, not just LIKES! And I also have nothing to do this fine evening so might as well work on WIPs right? Right, so let's get to it.

Now, before I start, just to clear something up, these posts are specifically, and I mean SPECIFICALLY, my personal observations in a piece of media as a South Asian person. ATLA combines multiple Asian elements and Asia is by no means a monoculture but understandably, there are cultural crossovers between different parts of Asia. If you are Asian but not South Asian and notice something that is also present in your culture, reblog, reply, and point it out (respectfully!). I'm here for these discussions and I am also here to learn! You won't be overstepping as long as you don't come out to attack me! There might also be South Asian elements I either missed, got flat out wrong or misinterpreted because South Asia itself is not a monoculture either. So, if you are South Asian and disagree with anything I write here, do speak up and discuss it here but also be respectful! On that note, let's really begin this post.

So as the title goes, this post is about our beloved Sparky Sparky Boom Man, later renamed Combustion Man. This is what the guy looks like in case you forgot -

What's the South Asian reference here? Well, his third eye!! Yes, the very eye that goes pew pew. The concept of a third eye originates in Tantric and Yogic belief and is closely related to Chakras (see my post on Chakras for a short blurb on what are they and how I think ATLA dealt with them). As per Guru Pathik's explanation, Chakras are centres of energy in your body. Each chakra is associated with certain energies and emotions which can range from fulfilling basal needs like metabolism and digestion (the solar plexus chakra) to governing more abstract emotional requirements like love, compassion, or the need to fulfill a greater cause (the heart chakra). There is indeed a chakra in the exact location of Combustion Man's third eye, which is technically called Agya (आज्ञा ) but more commonly, the third eye chakra. Elements of his personality also map well with gods within Hinduism that are typically depicted with a third eye. Keep reading under the cut to find out more!

What does the third eye chakra do? Can it shoot lasers irl if I 'awaken' it?

The third eye chakra's functions is one of those abstract ones. It governs intuition, perception, and intellect. If you meditate to clear the third eye chakra the most you can do is become reaalllyyy perceptive. I don't know if prophetic visions are real but if they were, then clearing the third eye chakra could in principle lead to prophetic visions, or so the tantras say. Lasers tho? Not so much.

Why does Sparky Sparky Boom Man have the third eye chakra and does it make sense that it can shoot lasers?

I have mentioned this in previous posts, but it is believed that to awaken your chakras, you need to go through intense meditation. Combustion Man very likely meditated A WHOLE LOT to awaken his third eye. We know spirituality is a thing in the ATLA universe and Aang and Guru Pathik also have managed to open up to the third eye chakra so not entirely an impossibility.

Lasers do also kinda sorta fit. This is a stretch if we are going by tantric rules for mortals, but hear me out. There are Hindu deities that are typically represented with a third eye. One of them is Lord Shiva. One of his forms is of destruction and it manifests when his third eye opens. In this form, he holds fire in his right hand and does the 'dance of destruction' such that new beginnings can be created after all that is old and evil has been incinerated (mind you, Hindus believe in an oscillating universe so destruction is required for creation in Hindu cosmology. Look up Big Crunch for a modern science take on this if you are a sciencey person). This form of Lord Shiva is called Nataraj and this is what it looks like -

See how his third eye is open? Also, no, he is not stepping on a child. He is stepping on a manifestation of un-spirituality known as Apasmara (or Muyalaka/Muyalakan). But yeah, Nataraj has become an integral part of modern Hindu symbolism and quite frequently shows up in popular media too, as I believe could have happened with ATLA (note: I'm not strictly cross-checking with the Wiki or deep diving the interwebs so this is conjecture)

Do all Hindu deities have a third eye?

Nope. The idea of third eye and chakras is not Hinduism-wide. Hinduism has different sects and each sect has its own rules. As a matter of fact, these rules even change depending on what community you belong to so there isn't one way to be a Hindu. I'm reiterating the 'No Monoculture' bit here again. The chakras originate in Tantric literature which is part of the Shaivism/Shaktism beliefs. Shaivism is the Lord Shiva fandom, Shaktism is his wife Goddess Shakti'/Parvati's fandom (Asian Idol culture is older than you think). Neither sect negates the other gods, just believes that people can have different patron deities and lead different lifestyles based on that. So the gods/goddesses who do have the third eye are either manifestations/incarnations of Shiva or Shakti. So a god like Vishnu, who is the patron deity of Vaishnavism, which is a sect that doesn't follow Tantric literature, doesn't have a third eye. Ganesh is sometimes shown with a third eye, but that sorta makes sense since he is the son of Shakti and Shiva (genetic relations vary depending on what story you choose to believe) and shows up a whole lot in Tantric customs/literature/rituals.

That is all I have for now. Not sure if there will be more South Asia in ATLA posts but if there is interest, I might do some series of South Asia in . If you have any requests, feedback, comments, my ask box is always open.

Till then, stay safe and enjoy Spooktober!
