If you want to know why something is or why something happens, and you want the true story that is science. Faith belief and opinion have nothing to do with that.
I am deeply trained in science. I am an engineer. That means I use what I know to make things, or fix things, or solve problems. I am very aware that the vast majority of people know a lot less science than they should. If they knew more even basic stuff it would make a big difference.
Years ago computers started to get into business in a big way. At first they were big machines locked in special rooms attended by trained technicians not unlike priests in a sanctuary. Then they started to appear on desks. When they proliferated like bacteria there were now trained technicians running from desk to desk to do strange exotic things like ctrl-alt-delete to bring the machines back to life when they inevitably went strange.
At that time most computers had funny plastic disks in funny plastic envelopes to store their data. They were called “floppies” because they were flexible. I remember when a tech made a special back-up and recovery disk to secure a very important accounting machine. It had to be kept at the desk in a safe place that was easy to find. This machine had a problem as it inevitably would. The user tried the special disk but it did not work.
The reason it did not work was the user kept the disk attached to the computer with a fridge magnet. At this point most people would go well why not, its convenient. But the floppy disk and almost all disk drives today encode the data in magnetic patterns on a thin coating of very tiny metal particles. Even getting close to a magnet will mess that up. Obvious to anyone with a really basic understanding of science. But we are in the minority now.
Now computers are everywhere and used by a significant number of the world population. Most are in phones. Any recent phone has enormous computing power and data storage. You may think it is just a phone and some apps, but it is a highly technical device. The science is hidden though. They are so common that almost nobody thinks of the underlying science because they simply do not have to. The dangerous materials in the circuits and batteries need to be dangerous to work.
When science makes things easy and fun, well thank you very much.
Yet for our dependence on science ( it is dependence far more serious than a heroin junky ) most people do not believe it. They much prefer to believe the crazy person screaming on a street corner or on a Podcast than a careful and qualified science professional.
Science says that vaccination prevents serious disease and saves lives. Millions of people are not dead because of vaccination from many once deadly illnesses. Millions of people now claim it is risky and causes problems. Those people also want to “decide for themselves”, but they do not have even a shadow of the scientific knowledge to make an intelligent decision. If they had it would be easy and the anti-VAXer movement would not exist. It is a political movement where dangerous people seek power and influence in exchange for some people dying. One early and major proponent was qualified to judge from her experience as a porn star.
Science says the earth is getting warmer and many bad things are happening to our planet. People making money from the industries and polluters do not want that to be true so they pay people to argue and muddy the debate. Science says the debate is not if it is happening, but how fast is it, and is there anything to do about it.
I confess to ambivalence. I know the earth is getting warmer. I also know that millions of years ago the entire earth was much warmer than today. Every continent was like a tropical jungle. No ice caps, no glaciers. Ironically that is the era of such rich plant growth it became the coal being burned today. The climate has changed and is changing. The real question is do we want to live or can we afford to live in a world really very different that what it was 50 or 100 years ago.
I know there are places in the USA that would be uninhabitable but for application of engineering (science). Deep wells draw water that collected during the end of last ice age, and is not being replaced, support the farms and cities of the US Midwest and Southwest.
Irrigation canals draw from rivers fed by glaciers in mountains that are going away.
Imagine no air conditioning. Imagine not being able to buy vegetables year round. Imagine there being no fish in the sea. All those things are plausible outcomes. Sea level rising is already happening so it has gone past plausible. That is science.
If people in general respected and learned just a bit of science decisions would be easier and results better.
Science deniers are not stupid, but they sure act like they are.

making some clay babies with the help of my precious cat <33
I like the fact you can make a magnet by just getting an iron bar, pointing it north, and then using a hammer you beat the absolute shit out of it.
That’s literally how some magnets are made and I love it.
