    (Another Friday, another snippet for @flashfictionfridayofficial​, another time where I might need a warning but I’m not sure how to warn other than references to media. Anywho, you ever seen/listened to Heathers the Musical? You know the song “Our Love is God”? Yeah. That’s the vibe here. Love and murder. Have fun.)

    The ash drifts down around us like snow, settling in your hair. If you were just a few steps closer, I’d reach out and brush it away, run my fingers through your soft hair, hold you close. Instead, you’re keeping a few feet between us, poised as if ready to run, and I can’t close the distance like I desperately want to without you skittering away.

    “What the hell have you done?” Your voice is quiet, but it cuts through the silence like a knife.

    “Darling,” I drawl, “what makes you think I had anything to do with this?”

    You give me a withering look, though the effect is marred by the tears in your eyes.

    “Look,” I say, because I admit I hate seeing you upset. “Technically, I didn’t do anything. Other than maybe, I dunno, nudge a few people in some direction, but the...” I mimic an explosion, “was not my fault.”

    “It’s what you intended all along, wasn’t it?” you snarl.

    I shrug, ruffling my hair to dislodge the ash. “Could have done without the snow in July,” I joke.

    You make a high-pitched, wounded noise in response.

    “Oh come on darling, don’t be like that.” You shy away from me as I reach out for you. “I did this for you, you know that.”

    “Don’t.” You take a shaky breath, trying to compose yourself. “Don’t use me to justify--to justify this.”

    “Darling.” I take a step towards you. You skip back a few steps in response. “Darling, come on.” Another step forward. Two more back. “Sweetheart.”

    “Don’t.” You choke on the word, stumbling backwards. You hit a wall, the crumbling remains of what must have once been an impressive building.

    I take the opportunity to swoop in and pin you against the wall. I can’t have you running off and getting hurt. “Darling, can you look at me?”

    You shake your head, your hands curling into fists around my collar, like you can’t decide whether to push me away or pull me close.

    “Darling, you know I had to.” Now that I’m close, I carefully brush the ash out of your hair and off your shoulders. “For you, for us.”

    “Not for us.” You look up at me suddenly, your eyes burning. “For yourself.”

    “For us,” I gently correct.

    You scoff.

    “After all,” I continue, “I had to, for us to be together. There was no way for us to build a life together unless we tore down everything first.”

    “You don’t even care, do you?”

    “I care about you,” I say. It’s the easiest thing in the world, saying that.

    “No you don’t.”

    “Of course I do.” I’m almost offended that you believe I don’t. “After all darling, I wouldn’t burn down the world for just anybody.”

    “I never wanted you to. Not for me.” You’re back to avoiding me, your eyes fixed on a point over my shoulder.

    “You know it was the only way for us to be happy,” I respond. “Come on darling.” I tilt your chin until you’re forced to look me in the face. “There’s a lovely little spot I have picked out, not too far away. My ride’s just outside the city, we’ll be there before lunchtime. A cute little cottage, just like you always dreamed of, with a gorgeous view. And then tomorrow morning, we can come back and start rebuilding; building our world.”

    You look at me, searching for something. The truth? You know everything I’ve just said is true; I would never lie to you, especially about our future. And if you’re looking for a reason, well, I just told you. If only I knew what you were searching for, then I could give you the answers you want and put your mind at ease.

    You take a deep breath and say my name.

    “Yes darling?” 

    “Never again.”

    “I don’t need to.” You wince, and I run my thumb over your cheek. “Never again darling. I promise.”

    Apparently that’s enough for you to finally make up your mind. And so, standing amongst the ashes and ruins, in the wake of all this destruction, you give me your answer.
