Andrew J. Blackbird was the son of the Ottawa Chief. His Indian name was Mack-aw-de-be-nessy (Black Hawk), but he went by the name of “Blackbird,” from the interpretation of the French “L'Oiseau noir.” His wife was of English descent, highly educated, and had four children.
He was loyal to the Government during the rebellion in the United States, will meet opposition by designing white people. These people tried to mislead the native people to be disloyal. He broke up rebellious councils of his people. He worked as U.S. Interpreter and was appointed postmaster of Little Traverse, now Harbor Springs, MI for over a decade. He also looked after soldier’s claims for widows and orphans for both his people and whites. He did all of this work with little pay. As he became older, failing health and unable to perform hard manual labor.
Side Note: The introduction of this book was meant to give a background of Blackbird and confirm that an indigenous person had written the book. The last statement says, “We therefore recommend this work of Mr. A. J. Blackbird as interesting and reliable.”
Disclaimer: This post is a summarization of the book. The book is available in the public domain and may contain some historical inaccuracy. If you would like to add information, advise a current article/book, and/or critically analyze the book, it is welcome. Thank you.
