“i’m getting better, huh?”
I had some trouble choosing a favorite scene, because I’ve enjoyed writing a lot of them. I chose this one because it was really fun to write, and its also just Bo and Shen having fun together. But mostly, because they talk about the situation, so its very worldbuilding heavy. Hopefully you enjoy!
For context, Bo and Shen are in a cave with Carapit(purple, winged humanoid), who is chained against the far wall. He seems very sly and untrustworthy, consistently reminding them that he’s a monster who can’t be trusted. Bo had Shen sleep in the boat while he stood guard against Carapit.
Well, without further ado:
The boat ride had been long and difficult. As Bo leaned against the boat, facing the strange creature on the other side of the cave, it only took a couple hours for him to fall asleep.
In his dream, he was sitting at his mother's desk. Mum and Dad had left for supplies again, and wouldn't be back for a couple of weeks. He was flipping through his mother's book, marveling at all the wildlife she had written about.
"Look at this one, Shen!" He pointed at a black bird with red-tipped wings and a gold-colored beak. "Its beak is strong enough to break through iron-wood trees!"
"What's an iron-wood tree?" his little sister asked.
"It's, umm... wait a sec..." He flipped to the table of contents and found the page number. "Here it is! It's a super dense tree, most axes can't even break it. People need super special tools to cut it down, but once they do, they can use it to build air-ships!"
"Wow!" Shen gasped. "People build boats in the sky?"
"I, uhh... I guess so. Look at this. 'Iron Wood is one of the oldest man-made flora, having been created by famed alchemist...' uhh... the next page is missing."
"That's weird," Shen muttered. "Go back to the bird! I think I saw the word 'alchemist' in there somewhere."
Bo dutifully flipped back to the bird and scanned the page. "'The stymphalian crow is a relatively recent addition to the swamp's ecosystem, having been created by the group of alchemists known as...' it's all blotted out."
"That's really weird."
They stared at the marred page in silence. "I wish Mum were here," Shen groaned, dropping onto the wooden floor and lying there, spread-eagle on her back.
"Yeah, we could ask her about who created all these creatures," Bo agreed. "I'm sure she would know."
"I miss her owls," Shen replied. "You remember how she used to study here, and the owls would just flutter in and hop around on her shoulders?"
Bo nodded, scooching his chair to see his sister. "She'll be back in a week or so. It's not like she's gone forever."
"I know. I'm just so bored."
"Me too, Shen."
Me too, Shen.
Bo woke up suddenly and found himself once again in the cave, leaning against the boat. Ashamed at having dropped his guard, he spun around to check inside the craft. There was Shen, fast asleep. Bo breathed a relieved sigh. Turning back to his post, he spotted the imprisoned creature, still chained up, but very much awake. Bo gasped, blood chilling in his veins.
Carapit was staring at him, glaring with unhidden loathing. Bo matched the creature's gaze for a while before finally averting his eyes. The winged prisoner's gaze did not waver. Bo made sure to grip his spear tightly, his body tense.
He didn't fall asleep again that night.

21. “I haven’t seen (her/him/them) smile like that in ages.”
No one asked for this but I’ve been wanting to write it hehe. A quick Kya and Tenzin talking about her and Lin. This prompt is actually from this list, which is the part one from the list I rebloged a few days ago. I also altered this phrase a tiiiny bit to make it fit with what I did.
Again, I’m an only child so I apologize if this is crap ahsjsjjs
Kya was coming back from the dock, Lin had gone back to the city for the night and Kya was staying on the island as they both had things to do in the early morning. She went to stand next to Tenzin, who was by the stairs, and stared at the city in the distance.
It had been two weeks since they announced their relationship and Tenzin didn’t see his sister for one whole week after. Tonight was the first time Lin had been over for dinner since their official announcement. Tenzin was still getting used to the fact that his ex and his sister were now a couple. If he was honest, he had his doubts at first, about how different the two women were. But they were less and less as he noticed how happy Kya seemed, and tonight any doubts he had left were put to rest.
He had been quietly observing the two women and realized how their differences actually complimented each other. There was an easiness there that not many people might have noticed. He knows his sister well, and he still remembers Lin’s mannerisms from their time together.
There was a gleam in Kya’s eyes and a shift in her tone he hadn’t seen since her last serious relationship. Lin was harder to read but instead of the, admittedly gentler, act of Chief she puts up when she comes for dinner, he noticed her calm expression and relaxed shoulders around Kya. An easy smile forming on both of their faces when they were around the other as if forgetting for a moment others were around them.
He was glad they found happiness together and, knowing Lin had someone in her life who loved her as much as Kya does, it appeased some of the guilt he still carried with him for leaving her the way he did all those years ago.
“I don’t think I properly congratulated you and Lin,” Tenzin said. A curious smile on Kya’s face. “I’m really happy for you both, take care of each other. I can tell what you two have is special. I haven’t seen either of you smile like that in ages.”
Kya blushes at the last part, a gentle look on her face and she is quick to throw her arms around her brother in a hug.
“Thank you, Ten.”
??? why are you giving a random thing within your borders to a foreign power that wasn't even on talking terms with you?
I'd understand if the bridge was to Stein but what ?????

I’m starting to think that love and happiness are only ever achievable in the moment of tragedy. Because most great love stories are about miscommunication and the quick heartbeat of a missed moment or the fumbling of a lost touch. What it we’re all headed for the inevitable? That searing of light before blindness. What if all positive absolutes rely upon the bitter aftertaste to make them sweet? Would you rather that than this muted, dull monotony?
fuck it im gonna watch his last vlive later

When you need to stay a bit longer awake to get the most of your next shift... Pinterest help me find a pretty cool reference from actually here! @obscuremodels had an amazingly beautiful photo and I love the feel it gave off of. Will probably paint this traditionally for a change. So probably a mix of watercolors and acrylic 🤔
