Okay why does Cid get his info from Quistis
“Quistis was right. You do have a hard time expressing your feelings.”
shouldn’t you know that??? Why are you learning about him from Quistis, you’ve known him his entire life?????? Depending on how soon after he was born that Raine died, it’s possible his family has taken care of him since he was a literal baby???? And for someone he did so much for to prepare for his fate with the sorceress, he sure didn’t prepare him for like... anything else
The school faculty calls Squall a problem child to his face. And first of all, that’s fucking gross. Don’t do that. But then on top of that, no one seems to help him. The only one who at least tries that I can see is Quistis, with her wanting to get to know him more and... she actually cares for him of course. But she’s a new instructor. I’m really being led to believe that the only one who actually tried to get to know him is a new instructor out of all the years he’s been at Garden, and that’s fucking sad. And if anyone else tried and couldn’t get through to him, chances are they probably just gave up.
Same with Seifer and Zell. Squad B is the ‘problem’ squad. And I could go on a rant about that as well, because honestly I hate (I love that it’s in the game because of the realism but hate that this is the case for some kids) how... realistic that is, schools not helping their kids with the problems they seem to have and then labeling them lost causes and problem children and casting them aside, just saying ‘that’s how they are’ and never giving kids a chance or the help they need. Giving up on their own students if they’re not acting how they’re ‘supposed to.’
Squall is Quistis’ best student, so what does it matter that he’s mentally hurting, right? He should open up. He’s just being difficult. But he’s a problem child. It’s just how he is. At least he can fight though.
But back to the original point because I kinda wandered away from that... what the hell is Cid doing?????? I know Squall is a bit cold and not very social, but that doesn’t mean you and every other person in the school faculty should just give up on him. Especially give up on him for most of his life, and then suddenly be like ‘oh wait actually I DO care about how you act so here’s a position you’re not trained for and not comfortable with, good luck.’
And then you have the added problem that Cid knows Squall is fated to defeat a sorceress, Cid prepared Garden just for this moment. And yet... there is not even a single sign that he even knows what Squall’s like before he becomes a SeeD. He gives everyone else encouragement of some sort and shows that he knows them during the graduation ceremony, yknow, telling Selphie he’s looking forward to the Garden Festival and all that, and all Squall gets is ‘finally, a gunblade specialist.” like??? Not even a word of encouragement??? Not even a ‘I acknowledge what you’re like’ (or in Selphie’s case, ‘I know what you’ve been working hard on and I’m excited to see it’) Just ‘finally I get a new weapon in SeeD ;)’
I know Cid is the headmaster and can’t completely control how instructors act and what they do all the time, and I know Garden lost sight of its true goal for a while with the whole money thing and NORG. But for someone seemingly so important to Garden’s fate, you’d think Cid would at least get to know him. And you’d think he’d pick up on the problems that were arising when Squall was still a kid too. I mean, back at the orphanage Squall asked Edea a few times if he was alone, and was constantly staying away from the other kids, calling out for sis. And at that point you’d think you’d see that he was struggling. You’d think Edea would tell him that he was too, and if she didn’t then shame on her. If she did, then shame on him for not doing anything about it.
At that point, Squall was still voicing how he felt in some way. And it really seems like especially once Cid got a hold of him and took him to Garden that was ignored, and when it got really bad everyone just decided that was how he was and didn’t help. Why didn’t instructors do anything? Why didn’t anyone do anything? Even if he wasn’t fated for anything special, why wasn’t anyone doing anything?
