Costume pour les patients
The first time I listened to Epiphany on the new Taylor Swift album I was blown away. The parallel between soldiers in a war and being a medical professionals in a hospital is eerily beautiful. I can only speak for nurses, but holy shit man. After feeling invisible to the public on what our true needs are to do our damn job it was just refreshing to hear this song. Of course it doesn’t make up for the lack of PPE or government response or people not doing the god damn thing experts are telling them to but man… What a song…
“Just a Damn Nurse”
Those 3 nurses have spent the last 7 hours, of their 10 hour shift on their feet. And yes, she knows you need another cup of ice but, the old man they brought in last night has just crapped on himself, for the 3rd time today, and his daughter is visiting him from out of town so……
Meanwhile a patient….
*Needs to pee.
*2 families are calling for status updates.
*One patient is LOUDLY demanding pain meds.
*A doctor is making his rounds.
*3 heart monitors just got detached.
*The pizza just arrived and she’s short $1.50 of her portion.
*Her kids making a “D” in geometry.
*Her boyfriend’s cheating on her.
*She is underpaid
*The cafeteria is closed early today (hence the Pizza).
*She has washed her hands for the 197th time today.
*She just got called dumb by a person who didn’t pass the 10th grade.
*The little old lady, who’s 89 years old just told her “she’s a good black GAL.”
*Everytime she walks into room 301, the patient is pretending to be sleep, with his gown up, exposing his semi hard micro penis.
*She literally CAN’T get the IV pump to stop beeping.
*She just saved her 7 millionth patient, from being prescribed the wrong medicine.
*And all 3 of them just lost their favorite patient.
Meanwhile, you’re ringing the buzzer nonstop, for a cup of ice…..

I always tell my patients do not be afraid to ask for what you need, but it goes such a long way when it’s done with patience, kindness, and understanding. Sometimes I have to apologize because I forgot to bring someone their sprite or they had to wait on their pain meds, because I had a confused patient physically fighting me and calling me every curse word in the book, someone trying to continually get out of bed who keeps falling, someone who I can only go into their room when fully gowned up because they have COVID which means they can’t see their family even though it’s their birthday, someone detoxing from drugs who knows exactly when their next morphine is due, and worst of all someone dying and I may be the last person to see them alive.
With all of that said, I chose this job. I love this job. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It was not a default or plan B. I didn’t settle. I’m exactly where I want to be. Helping in any way I know how. I cherish the moments when I’m actually on time and I get to stay in their room and listen to them talk about their jobs or their grandkids or any part of their lives. I’m honored when they care enough to ask about mine. To the patients and their families who thank me either through words or through grateful looks and smiles, who see that I care and allow me to make such a terrible experience at least a little bit better, I do it for you.
Barbara: light ver.
We can begin the procedure, she’s ready
