What does it take?
Sitting still,
being quiet,
paying close attention
to the present moment,
right here,
right now,
breathing,
listening,
watching,
waiting,
(Did I mention breathing?),
for what arises of its own accord,
emerging from the silence,
occurring to you from out of nowhere,
striking you with a compelling urgency,
leaving you with a profound sense
that something just happened,
wondering what to do about it.
Doing something about it.
What you do
tells the tale.

The hardest thing to believe
is that we don’t need anything
we don’t already have.
Which is to say,
we don’t need anything.
The right kind of company
is the next best thing,
but thinking it all depends on that
keeps us from finding
and enjoying
our own company.
So we run through our life
looking in the face of strangers
for what we can find only within.
Affirmation,
confirmation,
love,
affection,
direction,
completion…
No one knows better
than we do
when we are on the beam
and when we are off it,
when we are where we need to be,
and when we are where we don’t belong.
If you only had what,
you would be fine?
“Just give me this, Lord,
and I will be happy at last,
I swear!”
What?
What would it take
that you haven’t always had?
What do you need “the Lord” for?
When has “the Lord”
ever done anything for you
you didn’t do for yourself?
For that matter,
when has Satan
ever done anything to you
you didn’t do to yourself?
And what does it take
other than growing up,
to put you more
in the company of “the Lord”
than in the company of “Satan”?
