do you write drafts of emails in word documents before sending them or are you neurotypical,
Prepping for the next sequencing run! I have two students shadowing me while I teach them how to pool samples for next gen sequencing, it's a great way for me to see where my lab notes aren't clear enough. Also, I love when fruit prices drop it means summer is near, even if it doesn't feel like it 🌫️🌧️
Feels like bad timing that just as we got an update on the Pruitt spider scandal, it comes out that research on bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef could also be falsified??!! 😬😬😬
This morning I realised I miss posting pictures of my desk or pictures in general. I cleaned it up a bit... well everything is basically pushed aside :D
anyways, I hope you are doing fine. Sending you love and endurance.

Today was going to be about my meeting yesterday with my Co-PI, buuuut it turns out that I have even more news than that! How did that happen? Well I got an email from my main-PI asking me about my plans for the summer, when I wanted to finish the long, horrible, project I’ve been trying to work through, and more importantly, my funding situation. After some emailing back and forth things are…

Let’s talk about courses! Do PhD students still have to take classes? The answer is yes! Yes, we do! As a PhD student you’re part of the Graduate School at your uni. But what does that mean? Well, it means a lot of things but the main part are the graduate courses. During your PhD you’ll need to take classes, but those classes are not your typical subject classes. They’re indeed classes to help you grow within your degree and equip you with all the skills needed to be a successful researcher. I love doing those courses! I learn new skills and can refresh some of my old skills! Plus some of your skills that you learn in undergrad and masters can be different to PhD skills, if you believe it or not.
Thought of the day : If there is ONE THING that I wish was very VERY clearly said STRAIGHT UP when you decide to go beyond an Undergrad degree, it’s the following :
Research for an essay =/= Academic research
Aka : “research” in undergrad =/= “research” in postgrad/phd.
Aka : “essay” =/= “(publishable) article” [even if your (publishable) article is of the ~essay~ type more than the ~proper scientific method~ type ]
And I do not understand why this is not made very, very clear before anyone decides to truly make a career out of academia, or even just decides to do a postgrad.
Maybe it is particularly salient in my field ? But it is something which should be made extra clear, because it affects how you approach research itself, in very concrete ways. How you relate to your readings and to methdology(ies). How you organize your sources. How you even read articles. How you relate to academia as a professional field. How you receive feedback and criticism. The way you handled your work and reading and writing for years as a high schooler and undergrad is not the right one anymore. It. Must. Change. But I know I lost almost a year being confused by that because I knew research, right ? Well yes, but the “research” I knew was very different from the “research” people in the PhD program and Faculty Professors were talking about. We were literaly using the same word to describe two different things, and nobody pointed it out.
The intimacy of proofreading someone's PhD thesis.
Working on a project proposal for a potential PhD project today. Wish me luck?
Shutting down the machine that produces life for one thousand years
Deny yourself creativity
No-production logo Pencil Sketch effect
The top part of the document in these screenshots is actual work in progress on my PhD. The 'production' line came to me earlier. The 'deny' line later. It's part of...I don't know what. It's actually a breakthrough for me, almost devoid of...anything. I can't even remember why it seemed worth doing.
Recession, 2021, Digital art
Interested in the idea of “recession” as an element of the no-production praxis, in the sense of a receding from, I created this simple image wherein the no-production logo is literally in recession. Another example of the highly disposable, self-dismissive no-production (sic[k]) art style.
Ever say something dumb and immediately regret it? Yeah I made a huge mistake and ended up giving myself a ton of work for no reason. Well there was a reason, it just wasn’t needed. I don’t know why I do this to myself, but the good news is I got the work done. Okay, fine I’ll explain, it’s not a long story, but it is a funny one (at least now that the work is finished). It’s also a good reminder…

I'm SO happy i finally got confirmation I won a scholarship to do a PhD at Falmouth University this September! I got it with my own proposal which is about esports and gender, my dream topic of the last 4 years.
I can't wait, I'm actually already reading materials for it. I've had an honest conversation with my future supervisor today about my circumstances and he's SO nice omg I can't belive my luck. Having been in a PhD programme before and with a bully supervisor... this means the world to me. It's my career goal to do a PhD and work in academia.
I can't believe how happy I am, in comparison to last year when I had a horrible break down and burn out due to that experience. 2021 is now a really good year for me.
